Letter from the Rectory – April 2018

Dear Friends, Easter is, above all, about joy: the risen Saviour bursting forth from the empty tomb, offering life and hope, purpose and meaning, to a world bereft of these things. We seem to be living in particularly challenging times, both nationally and internationally. One of the symptoms of our age is an increase in anger. Some of this is misplaced, the result of many factors associated with modern living, the stresses of our fast-moving world of multiple choices and the expectation that everything should be instantaneous. Some, on the other hand, is righteous anger, as people who have been ignored for too long, rise up indignant at the injustices around them. Jesus himself demonstrated righteous anger when he entered the Temple courts in Jerusalem and knocked over the tables of those making a quick buck at the expense of the visitors in a place intended for worship. It is an incident that surprises some whose picture of Jesus is rather different. The author Dorothy Sayers once wrote, ‘The people who hanged Jesus never, to do them justice, accused him of being a bore. On the contrary, they thought him too dynamic to be safe. It has been left for later generations to muffle up that shattering personality and surround him with an atmosphere of tedium. We have very efficiently pared the claws of the Lion of Judah, certified him ‘meek and mild’, and recommended him as a fitting household pet for pale curates and pious old ladies.’ Without the resurrection of Jesus, the validity of the Christian Faith collapses. As an event in history, it is without parallel – and one that has changed the lives of countless numbers down through the centuries. Whilst some voices suggest that the Christian Faith – particularly in the West – is dying, the way that some of the younger generation of 20 and 30 year olds have embraced Christianity suggests to me that the truth is actually rather different.

Happy Easter! James Campbell

There has been a suggestion that future editions of our Parish Magazine might include items such as ‘Recipe of the Month’, ‘Gardening Tips’ or ‘Nature Notes’. If anyone has any thoughts on this or would like to contribute articles along those lines do please contact me at [email protected].

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

The Annual Meeting this year will be on Monday 23rd April at 7.00pm, again at the Rectory.

Apart from approving the accounts and holding elections, it is an opportunity to hear what has been going on and also what plans

there are for the coming year – and to ask any questions.

Last year’s new format meant that the meeting was much shorter than in previous years…and there will be a glass of wine awaiting

you to help the evening along. JMC

Churchwardens' Notes We would like to welcome our new editor, Stephen Whittaker, and wish him well for the future. Once again it was good to see the church full for our Mothering Sunday service. Our thanks go to the ladies who provided the flowers and made up the posies to be handed out at the service. Another big thank you to all those who gave up their Saturday morning to the annual spring clean of the church and to those who provided the refreshments. It is good to see the church looking so “spick and span”! At long last the new heating system has finally been officially commissioned. It is wonderful to come into such a warm church and gratifying to think that the benefit will be felt for years to come. Once again we acknowledge with thanks the considerable amount of time and effort spent by Robert Clark on this project.

Breakfast Church

lively action song. It’s an opportunity for anyone of any age to join in relaxed

informal Christian worship.

CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL EVENTS For detailed information about the many and varied events at the Cathedral, please

see the Church noticeboard or the Cathedral website: www.chichestercathedral.org.uk

Also on the noticeboard, there is a pamphlet listing events organised by FRIENDS of the CATHEDRAL, to which all are welcome; you don’t need to be a member.

Of special interest at this time are -

• SPRING HAS SPRUNG, a family activity day on FRIDAY, 13th APRIL from 10am to 3pm at the Cathedral and, later on,

• FLOWER FESTIVAL from FRIDAY, 31st MAY to SATURDAY, 2nd JUNE.

It is quite a long journey to get to Chichester to join these events but the effort of doing so could be really rewarding.

I love deadlines – I like the whooshing sound they make as they

fly by. Douglas Adams

YOUNG CHURCH

Three switches outside a windowless room are connected to three light bulbs inside the room. How can you determine

which switch is connected to which bulb if you are only allowed to enter the room once? Answer on page 12.

Those of you who receive your magazine in paper form should have found an envelope inside inviting you to make a donation towards

production and distribution costs.

Each magazine costs £7 a year to print and then there are extra costs if it has to be posted. Sadly, these costs are not currently

covered by our advertising revenue.

In order to keep the magazine free-of-charge we rely on donations from our readers. Please be as generous as you can.

Those of you who receive your magazine by email can also donate of course. Please send donations (cheques payable to Withyham &

Blackham PCC) to Anne Barker – Hillside, Lye Green, Crowborough, TN6 1UU. 01892 661393 [email protected]

If you are already in the Gift Aid Scheme at the Church, please

remember to include your number. If you’re not, please ask Anne to enrol you; it adds significantly to the value of your donation.

Many thanks.

A tribute to Frank Sellens from the choir.

Frank Sellens first came to Withyham in 1961 at the invitation of the then Rector Peter Scott, as Choirmaster and Organist. He soon made his mark on the musical life of the Church. An early feature was the introduction of sung evensong every Sunday, a tradition which still continues and which is nowadays very rare in a village church. He soon built up a keen and competent choir, including several youngsters, and outings were organised to sing at Beaulieu Abbey, Northleach, Dunstable, Rolvenden and elsewhere.

The choir were invited to sing evensong at Chichester Cathedral, an accolade for a small village choir. This is now an annual feature. Subsequently we have sung at Guildford Cathedral and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. Those of us who had the pleasure of singing under Frank learned from him much of our love and knowledge of Church music; for this, we owe him a great debt. His immense contribution and dedication to the worship at St.Michael’s will long be remembered. He retired in 2012 after over half a century of dedicated service to Withyham Church.

Frank's funeral will be at St. Michael’s Church, Withyham on Friday 20th April at 4.00pm.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL – MARCH 2018.

COMMUNITY WARDEN: Chris has responded to a wide variety of issues that have been concerning residents across the parish, from attempted scams to parking outside schools. Chris’s report will be available to the public upon request. He will also be attending the Blackham Village Market and the Annual Parish Assembly / Community Cafe. Residents can contact him on the Clerk’s email address, or on Chris’s dedicated mobile 07734 392141.

GROOMBRIDGE WARD: The street light on the Victoria roundabout has been replaced following a meeting between ESCC and WPC. The Community Warden has been asked to look at the overhanging hedge and the cars parked on the pavement near the Victoria Roundabout and to refer the latter to Operation Crackdown.

ST JOHN’S WARD: Another tree had fallen across wires in St John’s Road but has now been removed, presumably by the Conservators. School Lane was impassable in the snow, but residents helped vulnerable neighbours.

WITHYHAM / BLACKHAM WARD: There has been another road traffic crash at the junction of the A264 / Ironchurch Lane. A recently-refurbished fingerpost was seriously damaged in the crash; the Clerk has reported this to our insurers.

BALLS GREEN COMMUNITY SPACE: The project is nearing its final phase and we would welcome help from residents to complete it, so that we may join with you all for a celebration of the development of this community space. It is a real tribute to the few volunteers who have given up so much of their time on this project.

ESCC PROPOSAL FOR HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING SITES: The Parish Council has agreed to respond as a body to the consultation on the future of Household Waste Recycling Sites by ESCC. The County Council is proposing the introduction of charging for certain waste types that are not ‘household waste’ such as rubble, soil, tyres and asbestos, the possible closure of the part-time recycling sites at Forest Row and Wadhurst, and a review of recycling site opening hours.

PARISH LITTERPICKS UPDATE: The Groombridge litterpick had to be cancelled due to snow, but it was noted that Sam, the Parish Maintenance Person had been so diligent in collecting litter that it might be more appropriate for future litterpicks to be expanded into ‘Village Cleans‘, or bulb planting. Volunteers in Blackham, Withyham and St. John’s collected a total of 34 bags of litter.

URBAN GRASS CUTTING: ESCC have informed towns and parishes that they intend to reduce the number of urban cuts previously agreed from six to two from April 2018, to save £400,000 per year. Over and above these two cuts, ESCC will only cut verges which have become a safety issue. WPC considered whether to pay for additional urban cuts in 2018/19 and agreed that as funds are not available in the budget or precept, WPC would not be able to do so. There will therefore only be two urban cuts during 2018/19.

GROOMBRIDGE PLAY AREA UPDATE: A meeting was held on 8th March at 8pm at the Junction Inn, of enthusiastic volunteers raring to get started on developing the current Groombridge Play Area. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help is welcome. Details of contacts are in our WPC newsletter and on the WPC website.

WITHYHAM CHARITY: Canon James Campbell had written to the Clerk to confirm that they were now in a position to invite the Parish Council to appoint two Trustees to work alongside the two Churchwardens and Rector of St Michaels and All Angels for the Withyham Charity.

Peter Walker – Légion d’Honneur

After having been called up in 1941 and undertaking training, Peter Walker was deployed to the Normandy Landings at Arrowmanche. He supported Operations Epsom and Jupiter, notably Hill 112, and subsequently moved across Northern France to Belgium and then through Holland to Germany. He was later commissioned to Captain and posted to India.

The French government has been awarding the Légion d’Honneur to D-Day veterans from many different countries for several years, as a way of honouring and thanking those who fought and risked their lives to secure France’s liberation during the Second World War. An application has been forwarded on Peter Walker’s behalf and the Rt Hon Gavin Williamson MP, Secretary of State for Defence, has confirmed that they expect to hear from the French Government within the next 12 to 16 weeks. It would be fitting for Peter to add this to his other medals, for his bravery 74 years ago.

Peter is now 95 and lives in Crowborough. He and his late wife Patricia have always been popular members of the Withyham community and Peter is regularly joined by their children and grandchildren at church. Robert Murray Willis
