Dear Friends, This week we celebrate two important holy days: Tuesday, Nov. 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints and Wednesday, Nov. 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls). Both celebrations remind us that our com-munion with the Lord Jesus necessarily draws us into communion with all of our brothers and sisters who also belong to him. Please join us for these important days of prayer and devotion: Tuesday Nov. 1 All Saints (holy day of obligation) 9:00 a.m. St Anne 10:30 a.m. St. Mary 6:00 p.m. St. Mary (bilingual English and Spanish) Wednesday Nov. 2 All Souls 10:30 a.m St Mary 6:00 p.m. St. Mary (bilingual English and Spanish) Memorial candles are available at both St. Anne and St. Mary to commemorate loved ones who have died and support the St. Mary Cemetery Care Fund. In Christ, Fr. Tom P.S. A special "thank you" to all the St. Mary members who have contributed to the Roof Repair Fund. There will be a second collection next Sunday at St. Mary to help us reach our goal to have the church and office/social hall/classroom roofs resealed before the winter storms get worse. Please join me in supporting this important ef-fort.

Quote of the Week

“...[L]ove is not merely a sentiment. Sentiments come and go. A sentiment can be a marvelous first spark, but it is not the fullness of love...It is characteristic of mature love that it calls into play all man's potentialities; it engages the whole man, so to speak. Con-tact with the visible manifestations of God's love can awaken within us a feeling of joy born of the experience of being loved. But this encounter also engages our will and our intellect. Ac-knowledgment of the living God is one path towards love, and the “yes” of our will to his will unites our intellect, will and senti-ments in the all- embracing act of love. But this process is always open-ended; love is never “finished” and complete; throughout life, it changes and matures, and thus remains faithful to itself. -Benedict XVI, Deus caritas est 17

Q. What is an annulment?

A. To start, ‘annulment’ is not really a great name for what it is trying to describe. A better name is a ‘declaration of nullity’. ‘Annulment’ makes it sound like the Church is making a marriage null, which is not what is going on. Instead, a declaration of nullity is granted by the Church when it discerns that what seemed to be a marriage was not in fact everything that the Church knows marriage to be (for example, a bap-tized Catholic gets married outside of a Church ceremo-ny without permission, or one of the spouses doesn’t intend the marriage to be lifelong at the time of con-sent). In the Church’s eyes, there was a wedding, but a true marriage did not result from it. This is why a dec-laration of nullity is not simply a “Catholic version of divorce”, and why the ‘annulment’ process does not invalidate the Lord’s prohibition against remarriage af-ter divorce.
