Sharing Our Blessings THANK YOU to everyone who supports the four parishes in our cluster financially and with their time and talents. We can not remain strong, vibrant faith communities without your generous support.

Fr. John’s Notes The Lighting of the Pink Candle in the Advent wreath Each year the Mass servers make sure they light two violet candles and then the pink candle for this weekend. This tradition is of minor

importance, but it catches our interest as a small but unique tradition. Families and communities do special things each year to make a particular time special and meaningful. This color change reminds us that we a coming closer to Christmas and this is the time to remember to rejoice because God comes to us. Gifts and lights and food all can bring some happiness. But the coming of Christ heals our wounds as Jesus did in his ministry summarized in the Gospel today. We are called by St. James to be patient for the Lord is coming. With so many activities during this time, we can lose our patience with others. But the Advent season calls us to first be patient and trust Jesus, and then in the end we will REJOICE WITH OTHERS IN GOD’S PRESENCE.

Advent -A Time for Confession I would like to invite everyone to participate in the merciful Sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare for Christ-mas. I will hear confessions at St. Mary’s, Bloomington on Monday evenings during Advent from 5:00-6:00 p.m. , and at St. John’s and St. Mary Help of Christian Churches 20 minutes before the weekend Masses. There will be Communal Reconciliation with individual confessions at 7:30 p.m. at the following places and dates: St. Charles Church on Tuesday, December 17. St. Clement, Lancaster on Wednesday, December 18, at 7:00 p.m. Please check the bulletin for other times for individual reconciliation. Please share this invitation of God’s mercy with others who may not read our bulletin and encourage them to receive this powerful sacrament.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Imparts the love of God (CCC 1424) Is the sacrament of forgiveness (CCC 1424)

Restores us to God’s grace (CCC 1468) Brings about a “spiritual resurrection” and the

restoration of the dignity and blessings of the life of the children of God (CCC1468)

Low Gluten Hosts We have low gluten hosts available for people who must limit their exposure to gluten for medical reason. At each Mass in the cluster, I will have low gluten hosts available. Please let me or the sacristan know before Mass that you require the low gluten host. The host is in a plastic wrap that will be opened at the top. It will be placed on the altar during the consecration. The person requiring the low gluten host will need to come to me to receive it at communion time. For more information about low gluten hosts, you can read this online article. https://celiac.org/about-the-foundation/featured-news/2017/09 /nasscd-statement-use-low-gluten-host-catholic-mass/

CHRISTMAS MEMORIALS It is time to decorate our churches for Christmas, and

we are asking the members of St. Mary’s and St. John’s churches to help by purchasing poinsettias in memory of their loved ones. The prices for the flowers are $16.00 for a small poinsettia, $28.00 for a medium poinsettia, and $40.00 for a large poinsettia. Parishioners also have the option of making a donation to help offset the cost of the decorations. Memorials may be dropped off at the parish office or put in the weekend collection before December 18. Please indicate on the envelope what size plant, which church it is being given to, the name of the person(s) it is being given in memory or honor of, and your name.

No Salt or Ice Melt on the New Sidewalks & Steps at St. Mary’s Unfortunately, winter weather with snow and ice has already stated this year. We have been advised not to use salt or ice melt on the newer concrete sidewalks or on the new church steps and rectory ramp since the concrete could be damaged from it. There are pails of grit by the church entrances. Please use this if the areas are icy.

Reflection

“You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:8) Patience is another one of those things many of us

struggle with. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves with God’s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own.

Third Sunday of Advent December 15, 2019

Celebrate Life

As we enter the second half of Advent, the liturgy focuses more specifically on the Incarnation and

birth of Jesus at the first Christmas. We think about Mary's initial fear and uncertainty in the face of her unexpected preg-nancy. Then, believers spiritually rush to her side to eagerly await with her the birth of the Savior. The best way for a parish to celebrate Christmas is to rush physically to the side of those in the community who, like Mary, are uncertain and afraid about their pregnancy. We are to accompany them through their pregnancy with support and encouragement, and help them experience the fact that every birth reflects the joy of the birth of Christ. Nationwide, pregnancy centers providing alternatives to abortion can be reached through the “Option Line,” 1-800-712-HELP, or at www.pregnancycenters.org.

will prepare your way before you.” Strengthen, renew, and rekindle your marriage sacrament by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on January 24-26 in Brookfied, WI; February 14-16 in Geneva, IL or March 13-15 in Madison, WI. TEC Retreat #179 Coming to St. Cecilia, Wisconsin Dells on December 27-29 TEC (Together Encountering Christ) is an intergenerational movement of the Catholic Church especially designed to help meet the spiritual needs of Catholic Christians. Although it is an amazing experience for anyone 15 years of age or older, it can be especially rewarding for those youth who are preparing for or have been recently Confirmed and those adults in the RCIA program and those who are actively seeking to become stronger in our Catholic Faith. This is also an invitation for those who have already experienced a TEC to come and help by working. Fr. Eric Sternberg will be the Spiritual Director and Steve Davies is the Director (608.220.2088 or [email protected]). Applications and more information about TEC can be found at https://madisondiocese.org/tec Thank you.

SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS (c. 1542-1591)Feast December 14- How beautiful the experience of love for God and neighbor, a fire deep within! How disheartening when love suddenly cools and our souls grow dark, our prayer arid. How painful when misunderstanding, even rejection, comes our way, sometimes from those we least expect. For all such “seasons of the soul,” an inspiring fellow-pilgrim is the poet and mystic John of the Cross. As a young Carmelite, he was recruited by Teresa of Ávila for her Discalced (“barefoot,” evangelical poverty) Carmelite reform, striving to renew the Church from within after the Protestant Reformation had led countless religious away. John suffered unspeakably harsh abuse, even imprisonment, from friars who rejected this reform. Yet during these times of deepest suffering, John composed spiritual masterpieces that still guide souls to God, their titles reflecting his own painful yet ultimately victorious journey: from The Dark Night of the Soul through The Ascent of Mount Carmel to his Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love. John summarized his spirituality simply: “Put love where there is no love, and you will find love.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
