St. Mary’s Parish

We extend our congratulations and prayerful best wishes to JOSE CARVAJAL who was ordained a Deacon this Saturday, June 20, 2020 by Bishop Robert McManus at St. Paul’s Cathedral and who will join us on Sunday, June 21 at the 5:30 pm Mass to serve and preach as Deacon.

Jose was born in 1989 in Medellin, Colombia and was raised in Bello where he attended elementary school and high school. He received his bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish in 2011 from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana and later be-gan a master’s program in education. He returned to his home town to teach English as a second language at the same school he had attended. He then taught English and Spanish at the Collegio Jesus Maria in Medellin and served as principal there from 2013-15. He also served as an adjunct professor of Spanish as a second language at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin.

In August 2015 Jose came to the United States and through December of that year he studied ESL at Clark University in Worcester. He joined us here at St. Mary’s Parish on the weekends before he began his preparation for the priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD. Jose then spent the summer of 2016 with us for a ten-week internship. Jose his working on a master of divinity and master in theology degrees in Baltimore. Recent summer internships have brought Jose to St. Patrick’s in Rutland, Our Lady of the Lake in Leominster and St. Mary’s in Uxbridge. This summer Jose is assigned to St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Fitchburg.

This weekend it is a joy and a blessing to welcome Deacon Jose back to his “home parish” in the United States – St. Mary’s in Shrewsbury. Join us for the 5:30pm Mass today. A simple, outdoor, socially distanced reception will take place following the Mass where you will have the opportunity to congratulate the new deacon.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Physician Assisted Suicide

Let Your Voice Be Heard! Last week the Physician Assisted Suicide bills were reported “favorably” by the Joint Committee on Public Health. This is the first time the bills have received a favorable recommendation from a committee. The two bills were also amended slightly and merged into one bill. It has now been assigned to the Health Care Finance Committee for its review. We must do what we can to prevent it from going any further than the committee level. Efforts by the Mass. Catholic Conference and other like-minded groups and individuals to defeat these bills are ongoing. You can also help by letting your senator and representative know where you stand on this issue. Learn more and find out legislative contact info at www.macatholic.org.

CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION Last Sunday at the 11:00 am Mass we welcomed Talen Dagnese into the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Baptism. Mi-chael Dagnese and Seth Curll also completed their initiation into the Church through the celebration of the Sacrament of Confir-mation and receiving the Eucharist for the first time. Congratula-tions to Talen, Michael and Seth. May God bless you as you con-tinue to live out the gift of our faith as members of St. Mary’s Parish and the Catholic Church.

MEET ERIN GALLO - FOCUS MISSIONARY

Erin Gallo will be serving as a missionary with FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University students! Erin was raised in Shrewsbury and graduated from St. Peter-Marian in 2015. She enjoyed a successful softball career and was very involved with the Catholic Ministry at Co-lumbia University, from

which she graduated in May. With Focus, Erin will serve as a mentor to college athletes at Kansas State University. She will be leading Bible studies, working with students in small groups, and helping them to realize the fullness of their identity in Jesus Christ. To be able to serve these students, Erin needs a team of people to support her both prayerfully and financially each month. If you are interested in learning more about Erin, her mission, or how to support her, please contact her via phone or email: Phone: 774-275-7097 Email: [email protected] Erin will be with us at St. Mary’s next weekend (June 27-28) to introduce herself at the Masses.
