Parish Office - Presentation Room

Prayerfully consider giving us a call at 815.758-5432. A Bible and Catechism of the

Catholic Church should be obtained. Program materials are provided.

Hope everyone had a New Year filled with peace and hope.

We begin each year looking to the Mother of God, a model for all women.

This week as well we look to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first citizen of the United States to be canonized and considered the founder of the Catholic Education system in our country. She looked to the Holy Family for strength as she struggled through family life, the loss of her husband, poverty, persecution for her Catholic faith, the loss of children, the founding of a new order, and the struggles of establishing her schools and houses of charity.

As we honored the Immaculate Conception in December, we spoke of the “natural vocation” of woman as spouse and moth-er. Edith Stein clarifies: “Only subjective delusion could deny that women are capable of practicing vocations other than that of spouse and mother. The experience of the last decades and, for that matter, the experience of all times has demonstrated this. One could say that in case of need, every normal and healthy woman is able to hold a position. And there is no pro-fession which cannot be practiced by a woman. A self-sacrificing woman can accomplish astounding achievements when it is a question of replacing the breadwinner of fatherless children, of supporting abandoned children or aged parents” (“Woman”, 49).

This week we watched “A Time for Miracles” about the heroic witness of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, whose memorial falls on January 4th each year, as a Protestant Christian in her youth who served those in need in New York, as a wife and mother, and as a Catholic lay woman, religious, and founder. “Thus the participation of women in the most diverse professional disci-plines could be a blessing for the entire society, private or pub-lic, precisely if the specifically feminine ethos would be pre-served. A glance toward the Mother of God becomes indica-tive for us again. For example, Mary at the wedding of Cana in her quiet, observing look surveys everything and discovers what is lacking. Before anything is noticed, even before em-barrassment sets in, she has procured already the remedy. She finds ways and means, she gives necessary directives, doing all quietly. She draws no attention to herself.

Let her be the prototype of women in professional life.”

With Mother Seton let’s begin 2019 looking to the Mother of God, and with the Magi let’s seek the peace of the Holy Family anchored in our Savior.

In Christ, son of Mary,

Fr. Russell

Please notify the Parish Office if you or some-one you know will be hospitalized or confined at home and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick or are in need of a Minister of Care Visit.

Perhaps you or a loved one is unable to attend Mass, perhaps due to a surgery, chronic illness, or difficulty in mobility… It is important that each parishioner knows they are a part of our community, even when not able to actively participate. Each of us is in need of Christ’s presence in our lives… Ministers of Care bring the Eucharist to the homebound and offer prayer. Please call the church office if you or a loved one is in need of the Eucharist being brought to the home. They will contact me to arrange for a visit. Any questions, feel free to call Chris Hacker at (815) 758-5625. Please continue to pray for the sick and homebound.

Thank you for your continued support of St. Mary Church through your advertisement in our bulletin.

The other day I received a call from a friend. He needed advice about an old debt he never paid off. After I heard his story I asked a few questions by way of scolding; he answered among other things that he didn’t pay because he forgot about it, and thought the bank would do the same. But the bank never forgets about our debts, now my friend must pay. So we started thinking about what he could do. My friend does not have the money he owes the bank, but running away is not an option. The first thing he has to do is to go to the bank and inquire about his debt. Once he knows exactly the amount of the debt plus interest generated, he has to ask for a plan, and begin paying installments according to his income.

I hope he will find a solution to this situation. Anyway, I just wanted to share his story because it brings light to a deep-er reality that affects all of us. Think for a moment, from the very first second of our existence, God begins to give us many gifts. God gave us our bodies, our souls, our minds, our feelings; in a word he gave us our lives. The more we think the more we discover how great the gifts that he has given us are. I just wonder if God decides ‘to collect’ all the things he has given me, I wouldn’t be able to pay him back. Some of the things he gave me are already gone (the ca-pacity for amazement as a child). Others were never used (abilities never developed i.e. playing guitar), and others were wrongly used.

I am very grateful for all the gifts God has given me, and I want to pay him back but I cannot. What I do every time I have the opportunity I talk to him in prayer. I say three things: 1. Thank you for your gifts; 2. I am sorry I have not used them well; 3. How do you want me to use this gift?

I think when we realize that God has given us everything we begin to fulfill our vocation to life and holiness. Let us turn to God and ask him: How do you want me to use this life that you have given me? Just like my friend had to go to the bank to ask for a payment plan, so we turn to God and ask him: How can I pay all the love you have for me? How do you want me to fulfill my vocation?

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer Him gifts

of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In the spirit of the Magi, please give your gift to St. Vincent de Paul so that comfort and peace can

once again be given to a newborn child.

The three kings in today’s Gospel traveled a great distance at considerable cost to offer their richest gifts to the Infant Jesus. How far will I go and what will I offer to

do homage to this newborn King & Savior?

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION NEEDED

Training sessions are scheduled Monday, January 7 at 6:30 p.m. or Saturday, January 12 at 11:30 a.m. in the Church. Please contact the Parish Office at 815-758-5432 if you would like to sign up for Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion training. As described in the Diocese of Rockford: Norms and Guide-lines for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass, Office of Divine Worship, March 2004 . . .

General Principles – 1. In every celebration of the Mass, there should be sufficient ministers of Communion for the giving and receiving of Holy Communion in a reverent and orderly manner so that the faithful are given the option of receiving both consecrated species and that the Rite of Communion not unduly prolonged.

Our Parish is in great need of Extraordinary Ministers for all Masses but especially at the 4:30 and 10:30 Masses. Jesus called imperfect men to serve as his disciples and to build his Church on earth. Is Jesus calling you to serve our Par-ish as an Extraordinary Minister? Mentoring is included with training to alleviate any fear in serving in this ministry.

If you have questions and would like to inquire more about the ministry, please call Peter and Lisa Clark at 815-756-1068.

St. Raymond of Peñafort Feast Day - January 7

He was born at Peñafort, Catalonia, Spain in 1175. His family was very prominent and was allied to the kings of Aragon. He was an exceptional student and taught philosophy at the age of twenty in Barcelona. In 1210, he left Barcelona and went to Bologna to study canon and civil law. He received his doctorate in 1216, and was made archdeacon by Bishop Berengarius of Barcelona in 1219. In 1222, he entered the newly founded Order of St. Dominic, eight months after the death of its founder. Pope Gregory IX called Raymond to Rome in 1230, and he became his confessor. Pope Gregory IX also commissioned him to collect and codify the papal decrees which had been done by Gratian in 1150. He completed this task in about three years, and his work became known as the five books of the ’Decretals.’ This study became the cornerstone of canon law for nearly 700 years. He was named Bishop of Tarragona in 1235, but had to resign because of ill health. He returned to Barcelona and was elected third master general of the Order of St. Dominic in 1238. He revised the Dominican code and resigned in 1240 at the age of 65. Over the course of the next thirty-five years, he worked and prayed for the conversion of the Moors. He died in Barcelona on January 6, 1275 at the age of 100.

Thank you from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul! St. Vincent de Paul thanks everyone who provided gen-erous monetary donations to allow us to fund another Christmas Basket and St. Nick Program this year!! We are so grateful to have fully funded both programs with donations from St. Mary, DeKalb and Christ the Teach-er/Newman Center parishioners! With the donations, we were able to compile 140 Christmas dinner “baskets,” complete with a whole turkey and all the trimmings. In addition, parents of over 300 children received Target gift cards to help provide gifts for Christmas day.

Most importantly, we had a great response from volunteers of both parishes who gave up much of their day on Wednesday, 12/19/2019 to unload the food delivery from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and to assist our neighbors in need with their “baskets.” Without the help of so many, this program would not have been possible.

Thank you for your continued support in “Helping Us Help Oth-ers” in the name of Jesus Christ!
