Financial Assistance for Catholic Students
Application packets for tuition assistance from the Theresian Endowment, the Daughters of the Cross Educational Fund, and the Bishop’s Tuition Assistance are now available for the 2019-2020 school year. Partial tuition assistance is available on a needs-basis for Cath-olic students in the Diocese of Shreveport. Parents may contact any Catholic school office for information, or may apply online at www.tuitionaid.com. Deadline for application is April 15, 2019. For more information, contact the Diocesan Catholic Schools Office at 219-7253.
Annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal
As of February 28, 2019, our Appeal campaign has benefitted from the following results: 13% of the families of St. Mary of the Pines Church have pledged $23,355 in support of our 2019 Annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal. Please take time now to offer your Appeal gift if you have not al-ready done so. With the participation of everyone, we should easily reach our pledge goal of $62,500. Brochures, pledge cards and return en-velopes can be found in your pew. Please ask an usher if you do not find one available. Remember that you can also make your gift online or by auto-matic withdrawal using the instructions on the back of your Appeal pledge card.
Father Mike is still planning on leading a group on a tour of Italy September 3rd through September 12, 2019. If anyone is interested in going on this tour, please call the Parish Office and give us your name and number. There will be an information meeting coming up. As soon as the date is set, we will let you know.
Daylight Savings Time begins at 2am on Sunday
Please join the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans for their Lenten Mission with Fr. Andrew Dalton. Fr. Dal-ton teaches a course on Sindonology (study of the Shroud of Turin) at the Science and Faith Institute in Rome. He will focus on the wounds of the Lord’s Pas-sion, as evident in the Shroud, to get us all ready for Holy Week and Easter. He has a compelling, beautiful presentation! March 31st at 6:30 pm and April 1 & 2 at 6:00 pm.
Join us as our Parish honors St. Joseph with a St. Joseph’s Altar
Saturday, March 16, immediately after the 4:00 Mass: We will process the statue of St. Joseph,
follow the Holy Family as they seek shelter in the Tuppa Tuppa Ceremony
finally making our way to Vandegaer Hall where we will pray the Rosary in Italian and English and the altar will be blessed.
Sunday, March 17, immediately after the 9:00 Mass:
We will break the altar, feed the Holy Family and begin serving everyone! This is a celebration of life and answered prayer. The altar is open to all. Come and reconnect with your Italian heritage and, if you aren’t Italian, come and remember the faithfulness of a man who obeyed God when he didn’t understand everything, and remember a people who prayed and
believed that St. Joseph would pray for them. See you there!
We will serve food from the Altar from 10:30 am until 4:00 pm
on Sunday.
Please join us for our Annual St. Vin-cent ‘s Academy Alumnae Tag Day Scholarship Fundraiser! This silent auction will be held on Thursday, March 14th, 2019, at the Catholic Center, 3500 Fairfield Ave. from
6:00pm to 8:00pm. The proceeds from the event benefit the children and grandchildren of SVA Alumnae who are attending Loyola College Prep. Come renew old friendships and perhaps go home with an auction item! Anyone 21 years and older is welcome to attend. Tick-ets are $25 per person and include great food, door prizes, and lots of Irish Fun. The Powers/Craig Duo will provide wonderful music. Come be Irish for the Night!! Questions? E-mail Mary Salvail at [email protected]
Calling All Parishioners in the Medical Field
We are calling upon all our medical professionals to join us in participating in a refresher course on the proper use of our church AED machine. We hope we never have to use it; but should the need arise, our parishioners will be better taken care of. Once we have all volunteers lined up, we will then schedule the class/meeting. We do thank those who have al-ready answered the call by sharing your name. We hope to schedule a meeting for the training very soon. Please call the church office (687-5121) with your name and phone number if you have not al-ready answered this very important call.
The ladies of Sacred Heart of Jesus of Shreveport will host the luncheon/meeting of the Catholic Women’s League on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. Registration will start at 9:30 am and the meeting will begin promptly at 10:30am. It will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus, Gabriel Hall, at 4736 Lyba St., Shreveport, LA 71109. Cost of the luncheon is $10.00. Canned goods and used clothing items will be collected for the host Church charity of their choice. Please bring your “White Elephant” gift items in a gift bag or paper bag. These items will sell for .50 cents. Call Letitia Miles @ 686-6113 for reservations. Our guest speak-er will be Patty Underwood who will speak about the Daughters of the Cross. We will also have door prizes.
If you are interested in learning the Spanish language, please join us on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:00pm in classroom 12.

ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, & TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiv-ing, that we “set [our offerings]
before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can over-come our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God brought us into this land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 26:4-10). Psalm — Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading — The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel — Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led into the desert for forty days (Luke 4:1-13).
