The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Today the Church celebrates Corpus Christi, the feast of the body and blood of Christ. The context of today’s Gospel is the Passover of the Old Testament and the Last Supper of the New Testament. These reveal the transforming sacrament of Eucharist. The Passover celebration of the Old Testament recalls the historical beginning of the people of Israel. They were saved from the slavery of Egypt and were made a nation of Yahweh through the events that accompanied the Egyptian Passover. The Passover festival stands unique and special because the people were saved through the blood of the Passover lamb. After the people of Israel were liberated from the slavery of Egypt, the Lord formed a covenant with them on Mount Sinai. In today’s reading from Exodus, we find how at Mount Sinai the blood was sprinkled on the people to ratify the covenant. The sprinkling of the blood of the holocaust offering indicates that the people will obey the covenant of the Lord. In the Letter to the Hebrews, we see that it is the blood of Jesus that gives us eternal redemption (Heb 9:12). The New Testament covenant is the covenant of love. Jesus, thorough his blood, become the mediator of the new covenant, giving us the prom-ised eternal inheritance (Heb 9:15). As we move from the Old Testament to the New Testament, the promise is elevated to a radically new level - through Jesus’ blood (his unique sacrifice) we move from the earthly to the divine, from law written on stones to love imprinted on the heart. In today’s Gospel reading, we see how Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples. In Mk 14: 22-24, we find Jesus substituting the Old Testament Passover lamb with himself, becoming the new Passover lamb. He gives his body and blood for the salvation of many. Today as we celebrate the feast of the body and blood of Christ we celebrate our true existence through our total transformation in Christ. He died on the cross as the new Passover lamb to liberate us all from the clutches of sin, bringing us to the Kingdom of the Children of God. It is through the body and blood of Christ that this passage is made possible. This is made a living reality through the sacramental celebration of the Eucharist – the celebration of the body and blood of Christ. ~Fr. Jose
