Catachumens and Candidate
As you may know we have a large class of Catachumens
(those adults seeking Baptism) at our parish this year. I
think we are around 38. We also have one Candidate
(already Baptized) who will be completing his
sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist).
We will be celebrating their sacraments of initiation on
Saturday, May 30 at 4:00 p.m. Unfortunately due to
restrictions, you will not be able to be present. I am
asking for your prayers for them as they prepare for this
beautiful day. They have continued their instruction
virtually throughout this lock down and have been
continuing to grow in their faith. I am very excited about
being able to do this. I am looking into having this Live
Streamed for the Parish.
I hope to have a party with them and the rest of the parish
after a Sunday Mass when things get closer to a normal
again. I think it will be important for our whole Parish
Community to welcome them.
Other Intentions for your Prayer

The Parish-at-large is asked to help determine who might be suitable candidates for the Parish Pastoral Council. Three new parishioners will be selected and one will be appointed to fill the va-cancies created by the completion of terms of Peg Patterson, Judy Filice, Matthew Dunkman, and Phil Schertizing. On the lines below you are invited to nominate parishioners you believe might be willing to serve in any of those three-year spots. You may nomi-nate yourself if you are willing. Each person will be contacted and invited to a Discernment Meet-ing on Tuesday, May 19, at 7:00pm where the expectations for Council members will be ex-plained. (This meeting may be conducted online through a Zoom meeting if we are still restricted from meeting in the Parish Hall at that time.) All nominations must be in our Parish Office by Friday, May 22, 2022, 3pm. Names will be drawn at weekend Masses on Pentecost, May 31, 2020. _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________

STAYING CONNECTED St. Mary Cathedral continues to live-stream Masses each Sunday at 10am. A History of Pipe Organs at St. Mary Cathedral Parish
During this time of social distancing, especially without
public Masses, I am offering a series of articles about the
role of sacred music in Liturgy. Previous articles looked at
how music ties us to the heritage of the Church and how
pipe organs work.
St. Mary Cathedral is blessed to have an excellent pipe
organ designed to lead the singing and otherwise enhance
our worship. Organs are commonly described by the
builder’s name, and ours is a Casavant/Fowler. It is at least
the third organ in the parish’s history.
Organs at St. Mary Cathedral Parish had humble begin-
nings. When the parish moved in 1904 from Chestnut
Street to what would become a parish hall on Walnut
Street, a pump organ was used. These were small, rela-
tively inexpensive instruments, common in small churches
and even homes at the time. Organists pumped pedals with
their feet to create wind pressure to make sound.
In 1913, about the time the current church was dedicated, a
Steere and Turner Company organ was installed. The choir
loft was above what is now the Eucharistic chapel, and you
can still see the musical symbols, such as David’s lyre, in
the stained-glass windows.
In 1957, the parish had the opportunity to purchase an ex-
isting Casavant organ from a church in Grosse Pointe and
replaced the older instrument. About 10 years later, the
choir moved to the loft at the back of the church, and the
organ console and pipes were hauled out and reinstalled
there.
By 1993, it came time to restore the Casavant organ. The
work was done by the Fowler-Hebert Organ Company,
now located in Eaton Rapids. In addition to renewing in-
ternal workings, ten new ranks (sets) of pipes were added,
thanks to the generosity of parishioners. The most obvious
addition is the fanfare trumpets that point straight out from
the case.
The console where the organist sits was also remade. I
happened to have a part-time job with the company then,
and I helped with the design. It feels like a custom fit for
me.
If you would like to know more, feel free to send me an
email at [email protected]. I would be happy to
share more on this topic. Stay safe and well.
