Is it safe to come back?

Is it safe to come to Church and celebrate Mass

together? It is not without risk. Can the Church

provide a completely safe environment from Corona or

any other disease? The answer has been and will

continue to be no. We are doing our best to limit risk.

Capacity size of about 25 percent, pews roped off, no

singing, etc. We may even have to turn away people if

our weekend Mass attendance gets too large.

When we complied with the Stay At Home Orders, it

was about working to flatten the curve and reduce the

spread of the Corona virus to help prevent our medical

system from being overwhelmed. As we return to

public worship we are doing things to help limit the

risk to individuals and slow the spread of the virus.

We cannot provide a 100 percent completely safe

environment from any virus or other disease. Because

there is a risk, we are still asking that those who are

older or are immune compromised to stay at home. I

know many of you are aching for the Eucharist and for

community. Please hang on a little longer and let us

see what a couple more weeks will bring us.

Opening the Churches to public worship is not saying

that we have won and this crisis is over. The crisis is

not over. We are simply moving to the next stage of

how we are going to live with this virus that is still in

our midst. While I cannot predict the future, I firmly

believe that more people are going to get sick and

more people are going to die. That said, please do not

live in fear. Continue to be wise and prudent. Let

God’s light and hope shine through you.

Beginning this weekend Sunday May 31, we are

returning to our full weekend and weekday Mass

schedules. Weekends will be, as they were at 4:00

p.m. Saturday, 8:30 & 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Weekdays will also return to our previous schedule of

M-F at 12:05, Tuesday at 5:15 p.m., and Saturdays at

8:00 a.m.

Diocesan Services Appeal Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the

annual Diocesan Services Appeal. We are about

$13,000 away from our parish goal, which given our

current circumstances is pretty good. There are a few

parishes in the diocese who have reached their goal, so

it is possible. Together we can make it. If you can

DONATIONS AND ONLINE GIVING Thank you to those who have been mailing in envelopes and weekly donations. For those of you who wish to make a donation online, please visit our parish website at stmarylansing.org or us the direct link below: https://giving.parishsoft.com/App/Giving/smc

OFFICE OPEN PART-TIME Please be patient with us as we slowly begin to open our offices. We ask that you continue to follow the rules for social distancing and to wear a face mask upon entering the office. For the safety of our staff members and oth-ers, please do not come in to the office if you are feeling sick or are immune compromised. Any business that can be done over the phone should be done over the phone. If you call the office and leave a voicemail mes-sage, please be patient with staff members, as they may not be able to check those messages, from an offsite location, very easily or often. If there is an emergency or you need to speak with Fr. Karl, leave a message on his voicemail ext. 315 or dial 517-484-5332. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

offer a gift, please give online or mail in your gift to

the parish and we will process it. If you have been

watching the Mass on Sunday via Live Stream, the

Mass is coming to you through the work of the Dio-

cese. Another benefit we are receiving from DSA.

I hope you are doing well and staying safe.

You are in my prayers. Fr. Karl Pung

Pipe organs have been used in worship for centuries, so a

vast body of organ literature is available. At the Cathe-

dral you’ll hear music from the 16th and 17th centuries up

through the 20th and 21st centuries.

Pieces from different eras and locations tend to feature

different styles. With careful listening and by learning a

few cues, an early Italian organ piece (sounds a bit like

Renaissance recorders) can be distinguished from a piece

by J.S. Bach (hymn tunes supported by running notes in

repeating patterns) from a 20th-century French piece (lots

of switching between loud/soft and between slow/fast).

Since so much organ literature exists, careful planning is

required to use it effectively. Generally, music should fit

the season, feast, or solemnity, and it often relates to the

readings of the day.

With hymns, the text typically reflects these themes, and

organ literature is frequently based on hymn tunes or

chant works, so it has similar associations. For instance,

you might recognize a Christmas carol within an organ

piece used during the Christmas season.

Other considerations are more practical and often go un-

noticed by the assembly when done right. Musicians

must always consider whether the piece fits the action

during Mass. For example, is the piece the right length?

If it’s too long for a moment when the action should keep

moving, then everything stops unnaturally until the mu-

sic is done. If it’s too short, then there’s a sudden silence

before the action is complete.

And while most organists enjoy playing fast, loud pieces,

these would be jarring during meditative times such as

Offertory or Communion. Quieter, reflective pieces

would be more suitable. Bolder organ works are gener-

ally reserved for the end of Mass when the assembly is

being sent forth.

This weekend, as we celebrate Pentecost, most pieces

have a Holy Spirit connection. Next weekend is Trinity

Sunday, so pieces will reference the Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit. Listen carefully over the coming weeks to

hear how the music reflects and heightens our worship.

Feel free to reach out via email at:

[email protected] if you have any questions

or would like more information. Stay well.

Organ Literature in Liturgy

This is the fifth article in a weekly series

about the role of sacred music in Liturgy.

Given the current absence of congregational singing, it

discusses organ solo music – formally called “organ lit-

erature,” played at Mass.
