~~ January 17, 2021 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners: As we leave the Christmas Season and enter back into

Ordinary Time, we shift our focus from the baby Jesus to the beginning of His public ministry as John the Baptist in today’s Gospel points to Jesus saying: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Two of John’s disciples immediately followed after Jesus who turned to them and asked: “What are you looking for?” They responded: “Master where are you staying?” And Jesus replied: “Come and you will see.” This invitation is addressed to all of us.

Bishop Fulton Sheen said that the first word Jesus spoke to His disciples was “Come,” and the last word He spoke to them was “Go.” Before they could go out and preach the Gospel to all nations, they first had to come to know Jesus, to stay with Him, to listen to Him, to learn from Him, and be changed by Him. Only then could they go out and introduce Him to others. That is what we are all called to do; to spend time with Jesus, to come to know and love Jesus, to be changed by our encounter with Jesus, and then to go and introduce Him to others. As Bishop Robert Barron put it: “Evangelization is simply one thirsty person showing another thirsty person where to find water, one hungry person showing another hungry person where to find bread.”

Every human heart, whether one realizes it or not, has a deep-down hunger and thirst for God. But the truth is that God hungers and thirsts for us even more. Saint Mother Theresa would say that God thirsts for our souls, for our faith, for our love. Indeed, God desires us so much that He gave His only Son as the Sacrifice for our sins, so that we might not perish but have eternal life in Him. That is how infinitely valuable each and every human soul is to God.

This is what stands behind the Church’s relentless defense of human life. This Friday, January 22nd, marks the 48th anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court Decision, Roe vs. Wade, which made abortion a Constitutional Rite in our beloved Country. In the words of Pope Francis: “Every unborn child, condemned unjustly to being aborted, has the face of the Lord…they are conceived in His image and likeness…they cannot be discarded!” For God Himself became a tiny, vulnerable, little baby in the womb of His Mother, Mary.

Moreover, our defense of human life is not only for the baby in the womb, but also for the mother and father who find themselves in such a desperate situation that they feel they have no other choice than to abort their child. The Catholic Church is second to none in providing support to help any woman to have and care for her baby, or to find a loving home for the child. And if a woman makes that tragic choice to have an abortion, the Church will always be there for her and the father to lead them to the peace and healing that comes from the Mercy of God.

Indeed, our commitment as Catholics to the sanctity of human life does not end with our opposition to abortion but extends to promoting the dignity of every human person from conception to natural death and at every point in between. That is why we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend, who gave his life standing up against the evil of racism and promoting the rites and dignity of every human person of every race and color. For every single human being is made in the image and likeness of God, belongs to God, is cherished by God, and destined by God to live forever. Life is always a beautiful gift from God. May God bless us all.

Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey

January 22nd is the 48th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade, and is a day of Prayer and Penance in the Church throughout the United States for an

end to abortion and the restoration of legal protection for the unborn child. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed here on the Main Altar throughout the day beginning right after the 6:45am Mass ending with a Holy Hour at 3:00pm with the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Rosary for Life, and Benediction. Prayers will also be offered by the Knights of Columbus before the Blessed Sacrament at 11:30am.

“Year of St. Joseph” “Unnoticed Worker” Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of

the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed

her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a

father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,

and defend us from every evil. Amen

This year's theme is Abide in my love, You shall bear fruit. Please pray that they all may be one.
