Jesus’ sayings are hard. Sometimes there are fewwayswecanexplainaway theplainmeaningof the text.We tend tobefamiliarwiththestoriesofJesusthatremindusthatthelaw was made for humans, not humans for the law. ToillustratethispointwehavestoriessuchasJesushealingontheSabbath.Butintoday’sgospel, ratherthanoffera lexibleinterpretation of the Mosaic law concerning divorce, Jesusdoubles down. He tells the audience that the only reasonMoses even permitted divorce was because of humanstubbornness. In actuality, Jesus says, in quoting Genesis, what God has joined together, no human being mustseparate. He goes even further (thus the doubling down)andmakesastartlingstatementthatthemanwhodivorceshis wife and marries another commits adultery. And forbalance, hesaysthatthewomanwhodivorcesherhusbandand marries another commits adultery. In fact, manyscholars see in the prohibition against women as well asmen that the audience was likely Roman. Roman women, unlike Jewish women, had the right to divorce theirhusbands. In any case, this prohibition was, and remains, extreme. We can see evidence that the early churchconsidered this extreme because Matthew’s gospel (whichusesMarkasa source) alreadyamends theprohibitionandmakes an exception for divorce in cases of unlawfulmarriage, sometimes erroneously translated as “sexualimmorality” (seeMatt19:9). ButMatthewwasnot theonlyNewTestament text to relax Jesus’ absoluteprohibition ondivorce.Paul too, writingbeforeanygospelwascomposed, was aware of Jesus’ radical teaching on divorce. He evenquotes itbeforeofferinganexception (1Cor7:10-16)!Paulbasically says that if a Christianhas anunbelieving spousewhoseparates,theChristianpersonisnotbound.TodaythechurchreferstothisasthePaulineprivilegeanditappliesinRCIAandothercases.Butbacktothegospel.Thispassageseems to be of the kind that we have seen before in theGospel of Mark, where Jesusmight say, if your right handcausesyoutosin, cutitoff!Orifyoureyecausesyoutosin, pluck it out! The idea that there would be no divorce is agreat ideal, but unfortunately it does not match livedexperience. The fact that two New Testament authorsalready created exceptions is clear evidence of that. Theearly church understood that some of Jesus’ sayings werenottobetakensoliterally, asdif icultasthatmightseemtous. As adults, we need to approach faith with a certainmaturity. Rather than accept at face value each and everysaying in theBible, oreveneachandeverysayingof Jesus, wediscernthemeaningofthetextinacommunityoffaith.
