TM the Collar We usually think of Jesus as meek and mild. Today’sgospel begins with an interesting use of words thatsuggest sometimes Jesus could be pretty forceful: Jesus
made thedisciplesget intoaboatandprecedehim tothe other side.Hemade them—wordsindicatingthathedidn’tgivethemmuchchoice.ThenJesusdismissed thecrowdsandwentuponthemountainbyhimselftopray.It is as though Jesus is preparing everything and evenhimselftoteachthedisciplesanotherlessonaboutwhoheisandwhathismission is.Thedisciplesare inaboatontheseaandastormcomesup.Everythingisinplace.Jesuscame toward themwalking on the sea.Anewrevelationis about to happen. Jesus announces to the frighteneddisciplesit is I-I AM,thedivinename.PeterbrazenlytestsJesusabouthisidentity:Lord, if it is you . . .PeterseemstobeaskingJesusforadisplayofhisdivinepower,somethingthatrarelyhappensinthegospelaccounts.Hisbravado doesn’t last long. It is that same Peter whobecomes frightened and cries out to be saved when hedoes what Jesus commands him to do: Come. Withchallengingtruthfulnessandsavingpower,JesusrespondsbothtoPeter’sbrazennessandtohisfright.WhenweactlikePeter, Jesus responds tousashedid toPeter.Tobecertain of Jesus’ challenging truthfulness and savingpower,weneedonlytofollowhiscommand,Come.UnlikePeter,aswecometoJesuswemustnotloseourcourage;wemustnotlosesightofwhoJesusis,the Son of God;wemust not forget that Jesusunfailingly expends his powerto bring us to salvation. Only Jesus can remove thestumblingblocksthatkeepusfromrecognizinghim,fromcoming to him when he calls us, and from losing ourcourage. Here is why Peter’s challenge to Jesus is soexposing: Jesus’ identity is assured (he saved Peter);Peter’s(our)trustinJesus’powerisstillweak,stillneedstobestrengthened(Peter became frightened).Thegoodnews of this gospel is that challenge doesn’t lead todrowning, but to a revelation ofwho Jesus is.
