AUGUST 17, 2014 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN August 17, 2014 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish as we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordin-
ary Time! I pray that the peace of God be in each of your hearts! We especially welcome our
guests and visitors who join us for Mass. There are no strangers here, but only friends that
we haven’t met yet, so please say “hello” and introduce yourself to those around you at
Mass. Catholics can be a lot friendlier than we like to admit!
Last Thursday, St. Maria Goretti Catholic School opened its doors for its 19th school year. As one of the biggest
ministries of this Parish family, I ask all of you, whether you use the school or not, to keep our Catholic school in your
prayers this year. We pray for all of our area schools as they head back to classes. We are so very much blessed with
really great public schools and with really great Catholic schools, who have to be at the top of their game to keep
competing with our local public schools. The level of quality is good for all of us and most especially for all our
students. I am exceptionally proud of our faculty and staff and our Principal, Mr. Vince Barnes, here at St. Maria
Goretti. I am also very proud of the extraordinary number of St. Maria Goretti parishioners who work in our public
schools at all different levels and who make a difference in our community. Some of our public schools have more
great Catholic teachers on their faculties and staffs than some of our Catholic schools do! May all of us pray for a
great school year for all our children and young people!
Next Sunday, the St. Maria Goretti Altar Rosary Society is hosting the second annual Parish Family Brunch
immediately following the 10 am Mass. This event is NOT just for school families, or PRE families, although both are
coming back from their summer breaks. This brunch is for all of us, the entire Parish Family. Join us!
And that brings me to both our Altar Rosary Society and our Holy Name Society. The Altar Rosary Society is St.
Maria Goretti’s official women’s group. Every registered female member of the Parish over the age of 18 is ALREADY a
member of our Altar Rosary Society. The Holy Name Society is the official men’s group of St. Maria Goretti. Every
registered male parishioner over the age of 18 is ALREADY a member of our Holy Name Society. These are two of my
favorite ministries at St. Maria Goretti. Both of these groups do amazing things for this Parish Family and always have.
The three primary goals of everything that both the Altar Rosary Society AND the Holy Name Society do for our Parish
are the same. Both groups are to bring people together for prayer, offer opportunities for service, and provide
occasions for community building. These are good goals. We all have enough groups and clubs and societies that we
belong to. The Holy Name Society and the Altar Rosary Society should be different and offer more. They provide for
very specific needs of our Parish. It is my sincere hope that ALL OF US would take seriously our membership and
responsibility to both of these groups. Each one of us should ask ourselves what we are doing to help these groups out
and to keep them strong and active in our Parish Family. The Altar Rosary Society has the brunch next weekend. The
Holy Name Society has a Golf Outing for Vocations coming up next month. Both have Fall kick off meetings coming up
in the next several weeks. As a community, we ALL have a responsibility to keep both of these groups strong. May we
work together, as both men and women, to meet that responsibility!
Have you filled out your survey for the Diocese yet? The Bishop is asking for all of us to give input for the new
Diocesan plan. The surveys are available online. There is a General Survey, one in Spanish, one for youth, and one for
inactive Catholics. Printed hard copies of all of these surveys are available on the table in the Church Narthex. There
are extra copies of the survey for inactive or nonpracticing Catholics for us to take out to friends and neighbors who
don’t come to Mass. The Diocese wants to hear from them too. And the only way that we will probably get a survey into
their hands is if we take it to them.
These are busy days. These are great days! We are so blessed!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
Patience is the ability to keep the motor idling when you feel like stripping your gears.
Welcome! For more than 18 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: April & Chad Bills, Jacqueline Corken

STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
ST. FRANCIS MINISTRY
St. Francis Ministry is a group of lay volun-teers, under the guidance of clergy, who are devoted to assisting St. Maria Goretti parish-
ioners and their families in spiritual and corporeal works of mercy: to those who are sick; those with disabilities; those who are injured, homebound, or dying; the elderly; and those in despair or are grieving.
How can I help?
There are four major ways…
Friends: A Friend is dedicated pastoral caregiver who keeps in contact with the parishioner and the family to en-sure all are being cared for properly and have the support of the SMG community.
Helpers: A Helper is involved in sup-porting those who are sick but is NOT a primary caregiver and who is willing to do individual tasks, such as running errands, going to the grocery, respite care, or driving the sick to Mass.
Neighbors: A Neighbor is a parishioner who is sick or someone in need of assistance who provides care to someone who is sick.
Special Needs Group: This group provides spiritual sup-port to parish families who have members with special needs—through prayer, formation, information, and a sense of community.

Thank you to all who have participated in Bishop Doherty’s Pastoral Planning process. Our goal is to have 100% partic-ipation. Please take time to complete a General Survey or one that is appropriate to your situation. For instance, if you are in high school, take the high school survey, etc. Go to www.dol-in.org and click the button that will lead you to the surveys. Choose the most appropriate for your use. If you do not have access to a computer, take a survey from the back of Church and return it next week so someone can input your information. If you know people who do not regular-ly participate in Church and consider themselves Catholic, please take a survey from the back of Church and invite them to participate so the Bishop can hear their voices and incorporate the needs he hears into the pastoral plan.

REFLECTION FOR THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel, we hear the Canaanite woman pleading with Jesus, “Lord, help me.” She is persistent in asking for healing for her daughter. This persistence models great faith; faith that arises from seeking the good of others. When have you been persistent with God? What helps you persist in focusing on God? How can you
seek the good of others this week?

All 5th—8th grade boys and girls who want to become an

need to attend a training session on either Sunday, Au-
gust 31, 12-1:30 pm OR Thursday, September 25, 7-
8:30 pm in the main church. At least one parent must
attend the orientation. Registration for Lord’s Day Mass
preferences will also be completed at that time. All ex-
isting, already trained servers and their parents do NOT
need to attend these training sessions. However, if cur-
rent Sunday servers want to change their Mass prefer-
ences, parents should contact Jen Downing, jen.downing@
smgonline.org or 867-3213. Any student who has already
been trained and simply wants to train again is certainly
welcome. Please note: These are the only server training
sessions this year. There will be no other server training

What a great start to the school year. On August 14th,
we opened our doors to 458 wonderful students. The
teachers have worked hard this summer preparing
classrooms. We are excited to see what the 2014-
2015 school year will bring! If you want to stay current
on news about the school, please consider following us
on Facebook or Twitter (@smgangels). You can also

that will be updated weekly.
STUDENT OPENINGS
We have student openings in 5th and 7th grade. If you
are interested, please contact Michelle Hanlin at 317-
896-5582 x 1202 or [email protected] for more

ALLERGIES/SMG NUT FREE SNACK LIST
This year the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students can once
again bring a morning snack to school. This snack
must be peanut free. We have many students with
food allergies. To keep our students safe, we will only
serve food at our 3 holiday parties and ask parents not
to send in food treats for birthdays or holidays.
BRUSHING TEETH AT SCHOOL
In the past couple of years, as students receive ortho-
dontic appliances and braces at younger ages, quite a
few students have received instructions to brush their
teeth after lunch. If needed, send in your student’s
tooth brush and toothpaste in an open plastic, small
easy to carry container. The container will be kept in
the classroom and students will be given time to go to
the restrooms and brush their teeth.
