JANUARY 19, 2014 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

  • 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN November 25, 2012 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN January 19, 2014 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

    A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    Pax et Bonum!

Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Parish! We welcome all of our guests and visitors who

join us for Mass this weekend. Today we are celebrating the Second Sunday in Ordinary

Time. We all come here today to be strengthened in our work for the Lord! May the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass enflame all of us with the zeal and love to continue building the

Kingdom of God in our midst!

This is another big week around here. We have a lot of things going on. Let me catch you up so that you and I

    both can keep up!

The 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision is coming up this Wednesday, January 22.

Once again, we as Catholic Christians keep this sad anniversary with the hope that one day soon this dark period in

our nation’s history will end. No country should ever decide that it is legal for mothers to kill their unborn children. It is

a heart-wrenching anniversary for all of us, that we keep with a day of fasting and prayer for a greater respect for ALL

life! May all of us remember Wednesday as a special day of prayer and penance.

For the first time, St. Maria Goretti is sponsoring our own trip to Washington, D.C., for the 2014 Pro-Life March.

All of us pray also for all of those individuals who will be traveling to Washington, D.C., this week to represent us all.

We pray for a safe journey, a good prayer experience, and that God will use this journey as a witness to the power of

Life. I offer my thanks to our Youth Minister, Caitie Rose Beardmore, who did so much of the work to get ready for this

    inaugural trip.

This Tuesday evening is our celebration of First Reconciliation for all of our candidates for First Holy Communion.

We congratulate all of our children! This is a big night, as they receive God’s healing power and love in a new way

through the Holy Sacrament of Reconciliation. First Reconciliation reminds all of us of the power of this Sacrament.

When’s the last time you went to Reconciliation? Sometimes it takes the children to remind all of us that we need to

take advantage of this extraordinary gift from God. Regular Parish Reconciliation times are every Saturday morning,

8:30-9:30 am, and every Saturday afternoon, 3-4 pm. If it has been a little while for you, you might want to consider

    joining us this next Saturday.

Then next Saturday evening, the St. Maria Goretti Parish Council invites all of us to our annual “Guess Who’s

Coming to Dinner? Dinner” at 6 pm in the Parish Hall. We’ll gather together in the Parish Hall for appetizers, then head

out to our respective hosts homes for dinner. Then at 9 pm, we’ll all head back to St. Maria Goretti for desserts and

coffee. And let me tell you, if there’s anything that this Parish does well, it is dessert! We use this event every year to

get to know one another better. If you have never been, you should come and join us. It is a great way to get to know

new people and to become connected even more to your Parish family. It is still not too late to sign up. See all the

details inside this week’s bulletin on how you can join us next Saturday night. It is always a fun event. You should

come and join us. And as always, single folks are welcome. Fr. Travis and I will both be there, and I can assure you that

neither one of us will be bringing a date. Come on! Come and join us! What else are you going to be doing on a cold

    January Saturday night?

Then Catholic School’s Week starts next Sunday! Who says that there’s nothing going on in January? This is

another great week around here at St. Maria Goretti! Let us enjoy it all, and let us count our blessings! And let us keep

one another in prayer until next Sunday!

    In Christ,

    Fr. Kevin

Kindness is hard to give away because it keeps coming back.

Welcome! For more than 18 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but

with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all

do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!

    God Bless you. —Father Kevin

    MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

    HELP WITH FUNERAL DINNERS

We are seeking assistance with Funeral Dinners here at St. Maria Goretti—specifically, with setup and serving of the meals should they happen to occur during the work week. It would be wonderful to have 2-4 people help “coordinate” this service so that it will be easier to man-age long-term. Contact Brad Sponhauer, Director of Dis-cipleship, 867-3213, ext. 1151, for more information.

    DID YOU KNOW?...

That once Mass has begun, we do not genuflect to God in the tabernacle but that we should bow to the altar. During Mass, the focus shifts from God in the tabernacle to the miracle that takes place on the altar. So if you need to leave your seat (to take a child to the restroom for example), bow to the altar when leaving and return-ing to your seat in the pew. Now you know!

THE WELCOME LUNCHEON The Welcome Committee is hosting a luncheon, Sun-day, January 19, immediately after the 10 am Mass in the Parish Narthex for all new members of SMG.

We look forward to meeting you!

If you are attending and your last name begins A-L, please bring a ap-petizer to share; if your last name begins with M-Z, bring a dessert to share. Lastly, the cost for the event is $12.50 per person or $25 per couple.

Host Family Information: If your family would like to be a “host family,” call Mary Bellows 679-9859. In appreciation, not only will you receive “all the fixins” for to host a dinner, but you also will not have to pay to attend the event! What a deal!
