A NOTE FROM FATHER TRAVIS
First, a few words of gratitude: Thank you very much to all of the volunteers—especially the
Horan and Hopp families—who shared time and talent to make the Italian Festival successful.
In April, I became a member of the Ethics Board at Saint Vincent Hospital in Carmel. It is
amazing what scientific developments have enabled health care workers to do to save and
prolong life. However, these advancements give rise to new dilemmas and questions. This is
especially true when it comes to end of life care. The question often arises, “how much lifesaving
or life-prolonging care ought one to provide at the end of life?”
The answer to this question is not the same for everyone. This is not to concede to moral relativism, but to admit
that health care at the end of life is complex. Blanket responses like “do everything,” or “don’t do anything,” are not
acceptable. Rather than taking a black or white approach, it is helpful to have some guidelines.
Human life is not an absolute value. If it were, then martyrdom would never be acceptable. Human life is a great
value, but not an absolute value. God alone is an absolute value. Death is a reality. It is a part of the fallen world.
Although it is an affront to the dignity of the human person, it is something that cannot be avoided. As Christians, we
have hope in the resurrection. This means that we are not compelled to do absolutely everything to prolong life.
While human life is not an absolute value, and we are not obliged to prolong it indefinitely, we are not permitted
to actively or passively take it. This is euthanasia. Life is a gift. We are not masters of our own destiny. Often the
desire to euthanize a loved one is rooted in a desire to end his or her pain and suffering. Pain and suffering is not
the same thing. Pain is bodily and may rightly be treated with medication. Suffering is distinctly human. It is unique
to each person. As Catholics, we believe, like Paul, that our suffering is invaluable. It is a sacrificial prayer offered in
union with Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of all.
There is a difference between ordinary means of treatment (OT) and extraordinary means of treatment (ET). While
many factors play a determinative role in classifying treatment as OT or ET, OT is obligatory and ET is not. In general,
OT is basic care. At the end of life, this includes oxygen, pain relief, hygiene, comfort, etc. Strictly speaking food and
hydration are not treatments, since they are essential to life. However, at the end of life, as the body shuts down it
may not be able to process and absorb food, even with a feeding tube. As such, circumstances may preclude this at
the end of life.
While, in general, ET is not obligatory, there is some variability with regard to what is ET. This is based on
circumstances such as prognosis, age, current health, etc. For instance, an otherwise healthy fifty-year-old male
diagnosed with prostate cancer, may be obliged to undergo a prostatectomy, while a ninety year old may not be. No
one is obliged to undergo experimental treatments. At the end of life, many treatments become ET, such as, CPR,
cancer treatments, dialysis, and ventilators. Indeed, some even become prohibitive insofar as they may be harmful.
Obviously, these are complex issues. We live in a world that sanitizes and denies death. While it would be great if
we could always make decisions for ourselves, this may not be the reality. As responsible Christians we ought to
face the reality of death and do what is necessary to ensure that our wishes are followed. This may include having a
living will. Despite the controversy, living wills are not intrinsically evil. They may be morally praiseworthy if
completed in accord with Catholic teaching. Saint Vincent has adopted Five Wishes® as a living will.
Regardless, living wills ought to be a last resort. Ideally, one ought to have an appointed healthcare
representative (or two with a clearly delineated primacy). This should be someone with whom one has discussed
one’s end of life wishes in detail. While every scenario cannot be addressed, a basic direction should be understood.
One’s designated representative ought to be in writing.
In some ways we live our life as Christians in preparation for death. We are preparing for heaven. But we are not
merely spiritual beings like the angels. We are embodied souls. Preparation for death includes preparation for body
and the soul.
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but
with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all
do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

REFLECTION FOR THE 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel we hear that Jesus’ heart was moved
with pity when he saw the crowds looking for a shepherd;
someone to truly guide and lead them. Jesus reaches
out to them. When have you experienced Jesus reaching
out to you? How has Jesus guided you? What do you
need from The Shepherd today? This week?

the Youth Ministry section. PLEASE NOTE: FAITh and Confirmation registrations are due by August 15.

It takes a village to raise a child and the same is true of Confirmation formation. Please pray about and consider being
a Confirmation mentor this year. You would be paired up with another individual and have a small group of approxi-
mately 8 -12 teens to lead through this sacred process. If you have been thinking about it, consider this your personal
invitation! Pray about it. If you have questions or wish to discuss further, send an e-mail to Leslie Mimms, confirmation@

and would like to help us explain each role, contact Janet Thompson, [email protected].
SMG HELPS THE HUNGRY
SMG has teamed up with the Mobile Pantry from Gleaner's
Food Bank. Our first Mobile Pantry was held May 5 with
help from SMG students and parishioners, and we distrib-
uted food to 65 families. At no cost to SMG, the Mobile
Pantry brings enough food to distribute to 150-300 house-
holds and includes grocery products, meat, produce, and
baked goods. Food not distributed during the Mobile Pan-
try hours is donated to our Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry.
Our next Mobile Food Pantry is Tuesday, August 4, 4-6 pm.
If you are interested in helping at the next Mobile Pantry or
during our regular pantry hours, you can send an e-mail to
[email protected]. You may also call Yvonne Clark,
(616) 283-3354, with questions about the Mobile Pantry.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus had planned to slip away
from the crowds for a few moments of peace
and a little rest. When He saw the people gathered,
however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs
of others. Sometimes, as good stewards,
we are called to do the same.
Last weekend, our Parish Family hosted about 2,000 of our clos-est friends and family on Satur-day night. Not only was the event wonderful all around, but St. Maria
Goretti herself was definitely present to anyone there in attendance with her prayers and petitions for a “dry event!”
Thank yous must begin with Jeff & Missy Hopp and Ben & Erika Horan. Not only did they do an amazing job, but their entire families as well. It was great to witness of the involvement! don’t want to oversimplify the process of being a “Co-Chair” for an event like this, instead I want to thank them immensely for the way in which they accomplished it all—with hard work, a sense of peace,
and perhaps most importantly visible joy.
Thank you to Sheryl Clifford for once again coordinating the volunteer effort. It is not simple to coordinate more than 400 volunteers for a single event. And it also takes a wealth of experience to ensure volunteers are able to “be needed.” It seemed like most, if not all, volunteers were able to serve and then have plenty of family time to enjoy the festival. That is what we want here at SMG— the ability for many to make events successful. Not to be outdone, Bill Clifford absolutely rocked the kitchen this year!
Thank you to the 400+ volunteers; All Stars; and Parish Staff: Connie Anderson, Jen Downing, Deb Perry, Pat Gorman, Eddie Eberhardt, Ed Quinlan for all of your as-sistance in making this event possible. Thank you to the incredible marketing crew led by Stacy Collins and Ashley Murray! Thank you to Mike & Melissa Miller for once again leading our ticketing efforts! Thank you Don Travis for your incredible service!
What is great about this festival is that it truly is a “parish” festival. It is not just a few people giving of their time but many! My sincerest hope is that if you came out and volunteered, set-up, cleaned-up—or just ate, played, and smiled—that you felt something special about our parish last Saturday afternoon. I'm sure those visiting our parish did too.
In Christ,
Brad Sponhauer Director of Discipleship

FISH HOURS
Have you tried out the new FISH Hour tracking system?
Now is a great time to log those Vacation Bible Camp
and Italian Festival hours!
1. Go to www.trackitforward.com and click Sign In.
Logging in through the computer will give you access to
drop down menus to look at your timesheet and charts.
2. Download the free app Ourvolt Volunteer Time
Tracking—Track It Forward. The phone app only lets
you login hours. SCHOOL STUDENT OPENINGS
St. Maria Goretti School currently has student open-
ings for Kindergarten and 6th and 8th grades for the
2015-16 school year. If you are interested, send an e-
mail to Michelle Hanlin, [email protected]. FROM THE NURSE
Medical papers: The Nurse Office is updating all
medical care plans. We are sending medical sheets
home by e-mail and in large yellow envelopes. If your
student has brought home a yellow envelope, you have
medical papers that need to be signed by you and your
doctor and returned by the first day of school.
EpiPen news: The Nurse Office carries a “stock” Ep-
iPen for anaphylactic “allergy” emergencies. This does
NOT replace the student’s prescription EpiPens but is
available for emergencies such as multiple bee stings or
a new allergic reaction. If the EpiPen is used, parents
and an ambulance will be called. The student will be
taken to an emergency room. Parents, when filling Epi-
nephrine prescriptions, make sure the device expires
after May 2016. Also, if you want your student to carry
an EpiPen, you must have a doctor’s order for “permission
to carry.”
Hepatitis A requirement: All incoming kindergarten
students must have two Hepatitis A immunizations at
least six months apart.
