From the Desk of Father Raaser We welcome Father Charles Collins to our parish this weekend. Father will speak at all the Masses regarding the Propagation of the Faith. Did you know it was only since 1908 that the Catholic Church in America was no longer considered a ‘missionary territory’? Up to that time we were part of the Church’s missions just like China, Africa or South America is today. Our Church and its finances were under the control of a Roman Congregation known as the Propaganda Fide or the Propagation of the Faith. We received financial help from the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. In fact, one of the reasons that the Society began was to help the French Missions in the newly purchased area of the United States called Louisiana! The Society for the Propagation of the Faith was founded in Lyons, France, in 1822 by a young French woman, Pauline Jaricot. Inspired by stories she heard about missionary work in China, she felt called by the Lord to help the Catholic Church's worldwide missionary work. Pauline herself never traveled to the missions, which, during her lifetime, consisted of the missions in China — and young dioceses in the United States. Pauline gathered friends and workers in a silk mill asking each person to pray daily for the missions and sacrifice a penny-a-week (at that time, quite a large sacrifice!). From this idea emerged the Propagation of the Faith. Today the General Fund of the Propagation of the Faith, which gathers gifts from Catholics all over the world, is the basic means of support for the Catholic Church's worldwide Missions. It supports the young Church by responding to requests to help build chapels and churches, pastoral centers, clinics and hospitals and to provide medications, pastoral care and emergency relief. Assistance is also provided for lay catechists in terms of formation, remuneration and resources. Please pray for the missionaries of our Church and the missions throughout the world, and help support the missions through your generosity. We as a Church need to return the goodness of our past generations for the future of the Church throughout the world. Our Church in New York benefitted greatly from the generosity of fellow Catholics throughout the world in the past. It is our turn to help the other infant churches so as to establish themselves as independent and self-sufficient. The Church is thriving in many places in the world. They do great work and need our help to continue the Mission of the Church: to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ for the salvation of all.

Dear Friends, Let's remember to give thanks to God for all the excitement the summer is bringing. Whether we are focusing on readying ourselves to learn a new sport or remembering to apply sunscreen and keep hydrated on hot summer days, we must also remember to refresh our relationship with the Lord.
A Prayer for a GREAT Summer Lord,
What about you and me? I don't want to
forget you just because I'm off my normal school-year routine.
Keep close to me, Lord, and remind me that my relationship with you should never take a break.
Patricia Maldonado, Principal

IS GOD CALLING YOU TO SERVE?
Within the parish, there are certain ministries (service) that are important to the Sacred Liturgy. Among them are Altar Servers, Ushers, Lectors, Ministers of Holy Communion, over the summer months, would you consider serving your parish as a liturgical minister? We will train you and don’t be shy!
Altar Server Any boy or girl from the 5th grade and upwards are invited to join the Altar Servers. Of all the ministries, the Altar Server stands closest to the Altar and the priest. It is a most privileged place to stand and serve.
Lector The Lector proclaims God’s Word at Mass in the First and Second Readings as well as prays the petitions of the Universal Prayer (Prayers of the Faithful). Any parishioner over the age of 16 and who has good communication skills is invited.
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion assists the priest at the celebration of the Mass to distribute the Holy Eucharist, the Body and Blood of our Lord to other parishioners. We need help on Sundays and weekday Masses. Another aspect of the ministry is to bring home the Lord to those who are sick or homebound. If this aspect of the ministry interests you, please consider it.
Any adult parishioner is invited.
Usher The ministry of Usher is most important in the life of the parish. You are the face of our parish. You greet people at the door, assist them to their seats and collect the offering, pass out the bulletins and say goodbye to God’s faithful as they leave Church. Any male or female adult is invited to be a minister of hospitality. If you are interested, please call Fr. Raaser at the Parish Center, or submit your name and contact information to

THE GOOD NEWS FROM YOUR PREP The Memorare of Saint Bernard
Feast Day August 20th Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, and sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother, to thee I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate! Despise not my petitions, but, in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
Saint Bernard pray for us, Amen LOVING GOD UNTO DISTRACTION Saint Teresa of Jesus, speaking about her own wrestling with distracted prayer, says, I was more anxious for the hour of prayer to be over than I was to remain there. I don’t know what heavy penance I would not have gladly undertaken rather than practice prayer….the intellect is so wild that it doesn’t seem to be anything else than a frantic madman no one can tie down….All the trials we endure cannot be compared to these interior battles…[Yet,] do not imagine that the important thing is never to be thinking of anything else and that if your mind becomes slightly distracted all is lost…think of distractions as “mere clouds passing in the sky, momentarily taking your gaze from the Sun of Righteousness…”
Saint Francis de Sales, in a very comforting image, reminds us that every distraction in prayer becomes a fresh opportunity to turn our hearts yet again toward the Face of Jesus.
As you set time aside to pray, face those inner storms with serene confidence, keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus and judging your prayer not so much by the absence of struggle as by the presence of your resolve to look at Him again and again with love.
