"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!" The cry of the Canaanite woman in today's Gospel is familiar to all of us. Certain moments in life we cry to the Lord for ourselves and each other in our hardship, problem, suffering, grieve or pain. Her cry is one of communion. Living the Gospel means we work to increase our unity for one another, which in turn draws us to reach out to others in mercy and com-passion, welcome and solidarity. With so much attention this past week on the deadly vio-lence in Charlottesville, we have an opportuni-ty as a people of faith to pray for peace in our nation. No matter the differences, a Christian is one called to be an instrument of communion- drawing people in to defend the right of the human person at all stages, dignity of the stranger, respect for cultures and races, and solidarity with the poor and afflicted. Pope Francis sums it in a very concise way during an audience, "God gave us dignity of being his children!" Voices of God's children can be heard once again at the school. Last Wednesday, we wel-comed the children and their families back to school. Every year before the school year be-gins we are able to enhance, fix, and prepare a space so that our children can deepen their encounter with the Lord, boarded their knowledge and create lasting friendships and bonds with each other. Some projects have been extending the TK classroom, adding se-curity cameras for safety, new storage sheds, and painted some areas of the school. Each new school year brings its challenges but also it's blessings as we are over 300 students! Pope Francis challenges us when guiding the young," Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young person when we know how to give them space. This means that we have to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full develop-ment; to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be..." Pray for all young people as they begin

a new academic year that they may do their best with the gifts that God has given them. This Sunday we welcome the Little Sisters of the Poor from the Jeanne Jugan Residence in San Pedro. Every year we are privileged to have a few of the sisters speak about their apostolate and the many elderly people they serve at the residence. The Little Sisters depend on our sup-port just like their foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, who traveled the roads of France seeking alms and knocking on doors. St. Jeanne Jugan was well known for her begging basket. The sisters today are often known and seen with their "begging van" going daily to markets, stores, and business seeking food and items that can all be used at the residence. The other way is by appealing to parishes just like our own par-ish community. You and I can be instruments through which God can continue to sustain the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor. St. Jeanne Jugan, pray for us! Thank you once again for your continued gen-erosity to all these appeals especially the last one with Fr. Jude, the Claretian Missionary from Cameroon. A parishioner at my home parish told me once how he looked forward each year when a missionary priest comes to cele-brate masses and preach about the missions. It really is a breath of fresh air because we all gain an ever greater perspective of how wide and vast the Gospel is touching the lives of people across the world. Fr. Jude also shared with us how fruitful the Gospel is that it is also producing native vocations who are being formed and sent. May we never forget our call to be missionary disciples rooted in our bap-tism. "As the Father sent me so I send you..."At the end of each Mass we are sent so that means the faith does not remain inside the church the faith and our feet are directed out the doors to proclaim boldly a God who is in love with his people. “¡Ten piedad de mí, Señor, Hi-jo de David!”

El grito de la mujer cananea en el Evangelio de hoy es familiar para todos nosotros. Ciertos momentos en la vida clamamos al Señor por nosotros mismos y los unos a los otros en nuestras dificultades, problemas, sufrimientos, aflicción o dolor. Su clamor es de comu-nión. Vivir el Evangelio significa que trabajamos para aumentar nuestra unidad el uno para el otro, que a su vez nos atrae a alcanzar a los demás en la misericordia y la compasión, la bienvenida y la solidaridad. Con tanta atención la semana pasada sobre la mortífera violencia en Charlottesville, tenemos la oportunidad, como pueblo de fe, de orar por la paz en nuestra na-ción. Independientemente de las diferencias, un cris-tiano es un ser llamado a ser un instrumento de co-munión - atraer a la gente a defender el derecho de la persona humana en todas las etapas, la dignidad del extraño, el respeto a las culturas, las razas y la solida-ridad con los pobres y afligidos. El Papa Francisco lo resume de manera muy concisa durante una audien-cia: "¡Dios nos dio la dignidad de ser sus hijos!" Las voces de los hijos de Dios pueden ser escuchadas de nuevo en la escuela. "Oremos por todos los jóvenes al comenzar un nuevo año académico para que puedan hacer lo mejor posible Con los dones que Dios les ha dado. Este domingo recibimos a las Hermanitas de los Po-bres de la Residencia Jeanne Jugan en San Pedro. Ca-

da año tenemos el privilegio de contar con algunas de las hermanas que hablan de su apostolado y de las muchas personas mayores que sirven en la residencia. Las Hermanitas dependen de nuestro apoyo, al igual que su fundadora, Santa Juana Jugán, que recorrió los caminos de Francia buscando limosnas y llamando a las puertas. Santa Jeanne Jugan era bien conocida por su cesta de mendicidad. Las hermanas hoy en día son a menudo conocidas y vistas con su "furgoneta mendicante" que va diariamente a los mercados, tien-das y negocios que buscan comida y artículos que pueden ser utilizados en la residencia. Que nunca olvidemos nuestro llamado a ser discípulos misione-ros arraigados en nuestro bautismo. "Como el Padre me envió así yo los envío ..." Al final de cada misa se nos envía para que la fe no se quede dentro de la igle-sia la fe y nuestros pies son dirigidos hacia fuera las puertas para proclamar audazmente un Dios que Está enamorado de su pueblo. LA FE CREA UN PUEBLO UNIVERSAL Por Humberto Beltrán

El evangelio nos presenta a una mujer cananea, no judía, como modelo de la fe que lo obtiene todo (también el centurión romano, no judío, fue modelo de esa clase de fe), y de la universa-lidad del reino de Dios que rompe todas las fronteras. La mujer se dirige a Jesús con el títu-lo de “Hijo de David”, un título religioso mesiá-nico profundo. Jesús ignora a la mujer al princi-pio para probarla en su fe y porque su misión es para las ovejas de Israel. La salvación de Jesús llegará a los gentiles a través de sus discípulos. El diálogo de Jesús con la mujer no era tan duro como podría parecernos a nosotros, ya que esta imita a los diálogos sapienciales del an-tiguo medio oriente, en los que se jugaba con las palabras e imágenes para convencer a las perso-nas. La mujer es inteligente; tiene fe suficiente para usar las mismas palabras de Jesús para su propia ventaja: los “perritos” comen por lo me-nos las migajas que caen de la mesa de los seño-res. La mujer es modelo de fe, humildad y perseverancia, tres cualidades básicas para la oración eficaz. Los apóstoles interceden por ella y así lo que desea, pues ella no se rinde ante el primer “no” de Jesús. La mujer piensa sólo en su hija; tiene fe en el poder y la compasión de Jesús. La compasión debe vencer la discrimina-ción nacional, racial, sexual o religiosa entre los pueblos, abrazando a todos con amor. Había y hay, malos judíos (y hay malos cristianos) y buenos paganos; Dios juzgará a cada uno a su tiempo. Hay una fe cómodamente heredada y una fe laboriosamente adquirida. Toda fe es un don de Dios al que se responde con amor, comunicándola a otros. La mujer tenía fe, pero sobre todo tenía amor de madre; el amor movía su fe. Jesús le concedió el milagro y lo hizo “a distancia,” sin él personalmente, ya que la fe acorta distancias. San Mateo pone énfasis en la fe de la mujer que era el milagro en sí. Para Jesús, lo único que cuenta es la fe y no la raza o el sexo o la clase social; la fe rompe la barrera de todo prejuicio. En la eucaristía Jesús nos pide fe cuando nos da a nosotros el verdadero “Pan de los Hijos” que no se debe dar a los perros.

Fue precisamente la insistencia lo que al fin y al cabo convenció a Jesús. Se trataba de una mujer cananea, es decir, una persona paga-na que rendía culto a dioses falsos. No obstante, ahora ponía su fe en Jesús, y sin importarle el qué dirán, le ruega, le suplica, y vuelve a impor-tunarlo hasta que Jesús a fuerza de tanto ruego la escucha. Jesús, convencido de la gran fe que esta mujer ponía en El decide concederle su pe-tición.

Para nosotros es una gran tentación ac-

tuar o reaccionar como Jesús reaccionó al prin-cipio y mantenernos en esa actitud de aparente rechazo, sin fijarnos que se ha operado en la ac-titud de Jesús un cambio radical: de unas pala-bras frías de amonestación a otras de asombro para otorgar la salud deseada a la enferma.

Pero hoy en día está aceptación del próji-

mo se exige en términos de aceptación de cultu-ra, de raza, de condición económica o de ideolo-gías distintas a las nuestras.

Es tan fácil condenar a los que nos

discriminan por ser hispanos, olvidándonos que hay hispanos y entre ellos muchas veces noso-tros mismos, que discriminan otras nacionali-dades o grupos dentro de nuestra comunidad. Esta discriminación no se manifiesta siempre en hechos—negando empleo, escuela, o vivien-da—sino en la cara de disgusto o desprecio que mostramos al encontrarnos y hablar con ciertas personas.

Reflexión

Nuestra resolución en este domin-

go debe ser, tratar a todos los hijos de Dios con igual amor. Y, a pesar de las diferencias, hay que descubrir lo que hay de bueno en el próji-mo. Así nosotros practicaremos el mensaje de amor que Jesús anuncia en el evangelio de hoy.

Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. En este contexto, la tentación crece para recurrir a la eutanasia, es decir, para tomar el control de la muerte y llevarla antes de su tiempo, "suavemente" terminan con la propia vida o la vida de los demás. FAITH FORMATION

Registrations for the Faith Formation pro-gram now open! Please come in to the Faith Formation of-fice between 2pm and 7pm (Monday thru Friday), or Sundays 8am to 2pm to join our Parish Faith Formation sessions. All Faith Formation Programs are a two (2) year process.

·Elementary Faith Formation is for chil-dren from the 1st through 6th grades Sessions open for Saturdays from 9:00 am – 10:30 am and Sundays from 8:30 am – 10:30 am (which includes the 9:30 am Mass & Children’s Litur-gy ·Jr./Sr. High Faith Formation is for youth between 6th and 12th grades Sessions are on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm (which includes the 1st Wednesday Mass ·Confirmation is open for youth between the 9th and 12th grades Sessions are on alternate Sundays, in-clude attending the 5:00 pm Mass

Prayer Shawl Ministry at Saint Margaret Mary Would you or someone you know like to receive a Prayer Shawl or Lap Blanket? As our gi to the community, we are now offering hand kni ed and crocheted shawls and lap blankets to the parish at large. Uses for prayer shawl and lap blankets include undergoing medical procedures, as comfort a er a loss, during prayer or medita on, during an illness and recovery. There are endless possibili es! SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN

All adults who are volunteering in the parish are required to take a Virtus class called Protec ng God’s children. This is a three hour class that is offered at the parish and is very in-forma ve. If you are volunteering in the parish and have not yet taken the class or you took the class more than four years ago, you will need to take the class. All volunteers who have any contact with minors must be fingerprinted. If you are working with minors and have not been fingerprinted you must do so.

A FINAL THOUGHT At the mass we had, to celebrate Bishop Joe’s 90TH birthday, he shared: “the semi-nary does a wonderful job in educating young men to become priests; but it is the parishioners at the parishes they are assigned to that form them.” In my life experi-ence here at this parish, that ability to form goes beyond just the priests. We form one another into Disciples of Christ. When Maureen and I moved here 39 years ago,

we were each in our own ways lost and searching. I was an angry soul struggling to be a husband, a father or a friend. Maureen was searching to discover her own voice and also to reconnect with her faith. Because we wanted our children in the school here at St. Margaret Mary I was required to join the Holy Name Society and Maureen was required to join a guild.

I truly believe that it was that involvement in the school and these two groups that began to help us see that faith was more than just going to church and slowly it became part of our life. Through that involve-ment we began to develop friendships. And through those friendships a sense of what it means to be family here at St. Margaret Mary. In this journey my faith began to grow. I do not know how many times at a crucial point in our lives, one of you, just in the living of your life, touched me and pointed me toward God’s love. I remember attending the Renew Retreat weekend with Bishop Joe and being amazed at the faith and the struggles of the couples I was with. For the first time in my life I began to hunger for a relationship with God. I remember how the simple act of a wife gently guiding her husband to a seat for mass and then walking with him so painfully slow to communion opened my eyes to what it meant to be married and what a poor hus-band I was. It made me see for the first time that I couldn’t continue drinking. I remember a couple who raised their child who struggled for life and died early in life. Yet every time I talked with them, their focus was on their joy with their child rather than the pain. Their actions helped me to see our own struggle in a different light. I remember at the birth of our 3rd son, a parishioner bringing over a casserole dinner so that Maureen would not have to cook. Twenty nine years later that same wonderful parishioner came over with a casserole for our daughter-in-law who had just given birth to her 3rd child. Reminding me of what it means to be a com-munity.

I remember the first Lomita Fair and being overwhelmed not only by the turnout, but the tremendous response of a thousand parishioners who volunteered to make it successful. I also remember we had so much corn and hot dogs left over, that we had a parish BBQ 2 days later. I especially want to thank the 8:30/9:30 choir. I don’t know how many times your music lifted my heart. I remember my mass of Thanksgiving and the joy with which you accepted me as your deacon. But most of all I remember our pastors, especially Bishop Joe and Fr. Pat who guided us for 32 years; Fr. Mark for the 3 short years he was with us. I remember the priests from Fr. John Delaney and Fr Ed to Fr Gustavo and Fr Juan who touched my life. I want to thank Fr Paul for his guidance these last 4 years and Fr John and Fr. Marinello for their friendship.

I hope I have been a reflection, if ever so dimly, of Christ’s presence. And for those times when I was-n’t, I want to apologize and ask for the forgiveness of any one who was hurt by anything I said, did or failed to do. Remember each of you are a facet of God’s diamond that is St. Margaret Mary Parish. Continue to take the time and effort to be that mirror of God’s love and invitation to life for the Rick & Maureen Soria’s who are sitting with you today lost and searching.

I want to share a prayer I read recently. “Go now in peace, to love-and thus to know-to trust and to serve God. Sing like you’re in the shower; dance like no one’s watching; work like you don’t need the money; and love like you have never been hurt. For Christ’s sake, to the glory of God. Amen
