Archangel Gabriel (the real one, not the school)

At my suggestion, Bishop Zubik named our newly consolidated school after the Archangel Gabriel. St. Gabriel enjoys a link to each of the patronal names of the RocKenRo churches: Archangel Gabriel holds the same rank as the other named archangels of the Bible: Ss. Michael and

Raphael. In Tobit 12:15, Saint Raphael describes himself as “one of the seven holy angels who…enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One.” We may infer that St. Raphael therefore perpetually beholds the Holy Trinity, and St. Gabriel does likewise.

In the Bible (Daniel 8:16, 9:21; Luke 1:19), the Archangel Gabriel’s chief responsibility is to make known God’s plan for the salvation of his people. St. Malachy is most famous for his analogous gift of prophecy, though he was also an instrument of salvation in other sense—the restoration and revitalization of the Church in Ireland.

The Archangel Gabriel is best known for the Annunciation: The moment when he announces the conception of Jesus to the blessed virgin Mary. The principal church of St. John of God Parish is St. Mary, Help of Christians.

St. Gabriel is also the eponymous angel of a beloved prayer, “The Angelus,” weaving together several biblical tropes and traditionally said by Catholics at morning, noon, and evening.

blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS Each family whose children attended Religious Education classes last year was mailed a registration form for the 2019-2020 catechetical year. All forms should be returned to the Faith Formation Office by July 31. You can also register and pay online at rockenrocatholics.org/FaithFormationRegistration. CATECHISTS NEEDED Our Religious Education program is in need of faith filled volunteers to serve as catechists (teachers) and help pass on the faith to our children. In particular, we need a Kindergarten catechist, a second grade catechist, and a fourth grade catechist for our Monday afternoon session (4:30-5:45 p.m.) Is God calling you to this important ministry? MISSION OF MERCY PITTSBURGH The 3rd Annual Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh is a FREE dental clinic, where our underserved friends and neighbors can receive the care they need. This year’s clinic will be held Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 at PPG Paints Arena. Doors open at 6:00 a.m., clinic service begins at 7:00 a.m. Patients should come prepared to wait for treatment, as this is a first-com, first-served clinic until capacity is reached each day. Wellness resources will also be available to all patients who attend the clinic. There is no eligibility or income requirements: no appointments or pre-registration; and service is limited to one procedure per patient per day. This event is truly life-changing for the most vulnerable members of society who will receive the care they both need and deserve - elevating their dignity, alleviating their pain, increasing their confidence and giving them their bright smiles back. Caring, compassionate volunteers are critical to the success of the event. We are still in need of volunteers - especially dentists and other medical professionals - so kindly consider giving your time. LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN All children entering Kindergarten through grade 4 are invited to participate in the “Liturgy of the Word with Children” every Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Every week the children actively participate with the readings and have a discussion of the gospel message to plan how they will follow that message in the coming week. Bring a flashlight. We’ve heard good reports of that trail being in excellent shape despite the recent rains. ARCHANGEL GABRIEL SCHOOL FESTIVAL White Elephant Sale Items Still Being Accepted! The Holy Trinity Festival benefiting Archangel Gabriel School will be held this year August 1-3 on the Holy Trinity Campus. We are very excited to be able to come together this year as our new RocKenRo grouping to support our school. We will again be holding our White Elephant Sale during the festival with a special preview day on Wednesday, July 31 if you want to shop early and have the best selections! Last year we raised $10,000 and with your support hope to raise even more this year! If you would like to donate items we ask that you drop off items at the Archangel Gabriel School Cafeteria (formerly Holy Trinity School cafeteria) on July 13 or 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We are also collecting donations of: 2-liter bottles of pop, small stuffed animals and small toys for some of our game booths and raffle baskets. These donations can be left in the back of Holy Trinity Church or dropped off at the school office during summer office hours.
