Say NO to phishing scams The Archdiocese of Vancouver has received

multiple reports from parishioners and priests, including Fr. Mario, who have been approached by a recent internet email phishing scam. Imposters, posing as priests and using email addresses that are similar to those of RCAV priests, have been emailing people asking for personal donations, gift cards, and other forms of financial assistance.

Never respond to emails requesting any form of personal financial assistance, even if it appears to be from a priest, deacon, religious, parish staff or bishop.

If you have any doubt, please contact the sender by other means to verify requests.

Great news from Youth & Young Adult Ministry

St. Luke’s Youth and Young Adult Ministry has news on some super upcoming events:

• You’re invited to Freedom 2020! Freedom, the annual archdiocesan reconciliation event for youth will take place Friday, March 6, from 7 to 10 pm, at Our Lady of Sorrows in Vancouver. Youth will experience first-hand the healing power of Christ through music, prayer, testimonies and teachings, the sacrament of reconciliation, and Eucharistic Adoration. If you’re in grade 7-12, you won't want to miss this special event! Please take a permission form from the vestibule and return it to the parish office by Wednesday March 4. Parent drivers are needed. Please contact YM if you can help!

• Station of the Cross Drama: Youth Needed! Youth Ministry needs youth actors, stage crew, and altar servers (ages 11-18) for the annual Good Friday Drama. Practices will be Sundays, 3:30 to 5 pm, Portable 3, beginning March 1. Easter Food Drive back The Knights of Columbus invite us all to join in helping to Feed the Hungry this Lenten season. Their hope is for each parishioner to donate one can of food (or other non-perishable item) per day during Lent to increase awareness and support the

Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Luke's. Food will be picked up weekly from the marked donation bins in the vestibule.

Last year St. Luke’s parishioners and friends donated more than 1000 pounds of food and the Knights are counting on us to meet or beat that amount this year. The food collection will end on Good Friday. Thank you all for your support!

Sign up on Calendar Fr. Mario is calling on Saint Luke’s Parish

family to take part in 40 Days of Lenten Fasting and Daily Prayer for a New Pentecost and a New Evangelization.

The sign-up calendar is in the vestibule. Our hope is to have at least one parishioner fast for each day of Lent. Please choose one or more days, as you are able, and initial them.

There is no limit to how many people can fast on the same day but, with the exception of Sunday, we hope to have each day covered. Even those who cannot fast from food and drink can take part by relinquishing other activities that they would normally enjoy.

Saint Vincent’s Corner for March Message from the St. Luke’s Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul

The mission of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is to live the Gospel by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice and joy.

You may be surprised that St. Luke’s SSVP volunteers logged more than 3800 hours fulfilling our mission in 2019. Our monthly hampers are gratefully received by seniors, couples, grandparents raising grandchildren, families (large and small) and people new to Canada. We connect people with community resources, make home visits, visit the sick and lonely, participate in parish events, support the Migrant Ministry and contribute to the monthly Feed the Hungry Community Dinner. In 2019, we supported an immigrant family and plan to add a second.

Our organization is blessed to collaborate with the Knights of Columbus who are again sponsoring a Lenten Food Drive. The Knights hope to surpass last year’s 1000 plus pounds of food contributed. Blessings to all who support this project! It is now, during Lent, a time of self-sacrifice, that we especially recall the words of Jesus:

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me (Matthew 25:35-36).”

The SSVP constantly strives to renew and adapt to the changing conditions of the world. There are many opportunities within our organization for using one’s gifts for the benefit of others. Please consider sharing your gifts with the SSVP and those in need. Call the office if you would like to speak to an SSVP member for more information.

LIFE under new attacks The Canadian Conference of Catholic

Bishops (CCCB) as well as the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition and Campaign Life Coalition, have issued strong rejections of Bill C-7: "An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying)", tabled February 24.

In addition to voicing opposition, the Bishops have called on all Canadians who oppose the new bill to make their voices heard.

David Cooke, Campaign Manager for Campaign Life Coalition, has decried the policies of the current Canadian government whose “social policies are killing off Canadian citizens.”

“Around 100,000 preborn Canadian babies are murdered each year in this country through the Liberals’ unrestricted abortion policy – one of the most radical policies in the world.”

Cooke says the government’s euthanasia program – launched in 2016 – has already killed over 13,000 elderly and ill Canadians, and yet proposed changes would drastically expand access by including some very vague and dangerous terms.

Locally, in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the Delta Hospice Society has received notice from the BC government that their funding will end, and their property may have to be forfeited, by February 24, 2021, because they will not provide medically procured death.

Life is busy and raising a family takes most of your time, right? And yet, you want to make a difference, to help create a world where your children will be able to live by their values.

HOW CAN WE DO THAT? One important way is by supporting Life Compass Society.

Life Compass Society, a pro-life group with membership from Maple Ridge to Port Moody, is involved annually with the Victoria March for Life, the Life Chain, Pro-Life Sunday, 40 Days for Life, Hike/Bike or Run 4 Life, and the Focus on Life Gala Dinner. Members also mount the Blooms into Rooms project every Easter, bringing free flowers to more than 1000 seniors in care homes.

This past year, Life Compass hosted two speakers – Dr. Jim Lane educating us about Medical Assistance in Dying, and pro-life activist heroine Mary Wagner sharing her experiences in and out of prison.

In addition, Life Compass recently launched a four week pro-life billboard campaign with 14 billboards at five different Skytrain stations. The

signs encourage people to visit the Life Compass Facebook page, where they find compelling articles and videos. In addition, the Society mails out three newsletters each year and various emails as events arise.

None of this could happen without the support provided by YOUR memberships.
