Greetings from Your Senior Warden
Dear Parish Family,
As we near our Holiest Week of the church year,
I am choosing to share some personal thoughts
with you. This year marks the twelfth year of
me attending St. Luke's and the tenth year as a
member. Many of you know that I came to
Kansas to help my oldest son and his family as
they all came to realize the task ahead of pulling
together to face the consequences of
Huntington's disease which my daughter-in-law
has the misfortune of inheriting. The road has
been full of turns and bumps. We have all had
moments of intense anger and shaking our fists
at the sky and asking why is this happening! I
know that many of you have your own
challenges to face and burdens to bear. I hope
my story helps even one person to come closer
and more steeped than ever in a personal
relationship with our God.
Our little family has grown in ways they could
not have imagined. Chris needs everything
done for her now and I am proud to say that her
husband and boys have learned to fill her
needs. We have learned to accept help from
one another and
caregivers who come to us Monday through
Friday. For a very independent group this has
truly been a different outcome in life that we
expected.
For me personally, I knew I needed to find a
church home when I moved to Shawnee. I left a
community that I was anchored in for sixty-four
years as well as the rest of my family and life
long friends. The weekend I drove Chris and
two of the boys plus the little dog to Shawnee,
(Craig and Matthew where already here), it was
Palm Sunday. So I found the yellow pages and
decided I could find my way to St. Luke's. As
time went on and the family became acquainted
with their new surroundings, they shopped
around for a new church home and decided St.
Luke's would be their choice.
When I moved here two years later I had a
church home to turn to. Pat and Jim Gray took
me under their wings as did others and made
me feel welcome and cared for. Here is my
point in telling you some of my story.
Without any of us doing anything we have been
cared for and loved by God no matter what our
circumstances. Soon we will gather and worship
together to celebrate the wonder of Easter. Our
tradition offers each one the opportunity to
remember the greatest sacrifice and love given
to all. I pray that you will take advantage by
attending the intergenerational Passion Play that
will be presented between services on Palm
Sunday and of course the three special services
beginning on Maundy Thursday through Easter
(all of which are one continuing worship
experience) and know that you are loved and
cared for by our loving God and be empowered
to share that love with the lives you touch each
day.
See you in Church,
Ruth Knabel

Presiding Bishop in West Missouri
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will lead two outdoor revivals in May in cities near
the Kansas-Missouri border. Members of this diocese are invited to attend either or
both of them.
Saturday, May 5, from noon to 3 p.m.
Power and Light District Stage at 420 West 14th Street, KCMO
Sunday, May 6, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Hammons Field, 955 East Trafficway Street, Springfield
Revivals are planned to “stir and renew hearts for
Jesus, to equip Episcopalians as evangelists and to
welcome people who aren’t part of a church to join
the Jesus Movement,” according to a news release
announcing the events.
The events will feature worship and prayer services,
dynamic preachers, music, personal testimony,
storytelling and a call to action. More information
about the revival series is online.
