One of the harder memories I have from my service in the Marine Corps was the afterChristmas return of fellow Marines when you have been on duty during this festive time.As a young man those first Christmases away from family, community and tradition often feltempty. Hearing the stories of friends talking about the joy of family, their sharing of gifts and the blessings of beingtogether was not easy to hear. One of the only familiar things I had inBeaufort, South Carolina was Christmas Mass. I can still remember quite distinctly that firstChristmas in 1979, I had just recently been assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station and beingnew was at the bottom of the ladder. Going to Midnight Mass that Christmas was a trueblessing as the celebration brought into focus the reality that we are not alone.I tell this short story not to lament the loss of Christmas with family because it was the first butnot the last time I have been away for Christmas but rather the reality of our universal call toholiness and how we discover this through community and tradition that we often don't evenrealize we have until it is needed...Read full Pastoral notes Notas pastorales completas

The Epiphany Of The LordJanuary 6
The word 'Epiphany' comes from Greek and means 'manifestation'.Epiphany, or the 12th day of Christmas, falls on January 6 andmarks the last day of the Christmas season. The Twelfth Night(Epiphany) also marks a visit to the baby Jesus by The Magi, (thethree Kings, or Wise Men). According to the Gospel of Matthew, thethree kings found baby Jesus by following a star across the desert toBethlehem. The three kings: Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar,followed the star to meet the baby Jesus, and offer Him symbolic giftsof gold, frankincense and myrrh. Across the world, the day'sfestivities vary. In the Spanish speaking world Epiphany is known asDia de los Reyes (Three Kings' Day) In Mexico, for instance, familiesgather to tastethe Rosca de Reyes (Kings' bread) where a Jesus figurine is hidden inthe bread. Whoever finds the small baby Jesus hidden inside theirslice of the Rosca de Reyes throws a party on Candlemas, February2nd. In some European and Lat- in-American countries, childrenleave their shoes out the night before to be filled with gifts, whileothers leave straw for the three Kings' horses. The Catholic dioceses inthe US mark the Epiphany feast on the Sunday after January 6.

Scripture Study Starting January 7
Scripture Studies: The St. Lucy Scripture Study Group will be examining the Old Testament Book of Isaiah in a 13week course starting Monday evening, January 7, 2019 at 7 pm in PAC B. The same course will be offered onTuesday mornings starting January 8 at 10 am in PAC B. No previous bible study experience is necessary. Thesuggested donation is $20 per person.
