As the days grow warmer, our parks are reaching the pinnacle of their beauty and popularity. Meanwhile, our dedicated park staff has been diligently preparing for spring and summer visitors. We are especially excited about a couple of new features.

The County’s first Dog Park will soon open at Queeny Park. This new, five-acre space will offer pets and their human friends a place to play. It will include a dog agility course and water features. And for dog lovers, it’s ideally located on the south side of another popular attraction, the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog.

These attractions follow the openings last year of The Pavilion at Lemay recreation center and pool, and the new aquatic center at North County Recreation Complex. And of course, the County will again offer a wide compliment of camps to keep children engaged and occupied during the summer break.

I consider our 71 County Parks to be a treasure. That’s why, while serving as a County Councilman, I stood up to defend the parks when threats arose to close or sell some of them off. I hope you will join my wife, children and me as we enjoy the terrific amenities and activities at our parks this spring and summer.

Yours very truly,

Steven V. Stenger St. Louis County Executive

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”—John Dewey

Welcome to the August Meeting, we appreciate & Thank David Sherwood & Staff for their continuous support of the Chil-dren’s Garden Club. Has everyone survived the Heat ? how about the plants in your landscape. Today we will discuss this new season we are about to enter, Fall Gardening.

Hope to see you next month at For the Garden @ Haefners Greenhouse 6703 Telegraph Road, topic is All about Bats.

This is also the First meeting of the Fall Session of the Junior Master Gardener – Golden Rays Series. This program is modeled after the highly successful Master Gardner Program and offers Horticultural and Environmental, Science Education, Leadership, and Life skills. Development though fun and creative activities. This program is committed to helping Young people become good gardeners and good citizens so they can make a positive contribution to their community , school and family. To enroll please let us know , or contact us @ (314) 615-8482 – Tonya or Doug. Or Email us @ [email protected] or [email protected]

Will we have any Fall Color of the fi rst crimson leaves of autumn, and learn about fall blooming crocus very similar to the spring blooming crocus. The ravages of heat, storms, drought, and humidity make the late summer garden appear so worn out that the freshness of newly emerging fall crocus and colchicum bulbs, Pansies, our cool weather crop are a breath of fresh air. One glimpse and you’ll suddenly want to bite into a crisp apple, or go on a hayride in a County Park, check it out in our Activity Guide www.stlouisco.com/parks. Some say nature saves her biggest show for fall, but I feel you need to appreciate each season Mother Nature has to give us.

Gigi Scaria: TimeLaumeier presents new work by New Delhi-based artist Gigi Scaria, whose exhibition Time focuses on “social mapping”—whether territorial, cultural, environmental or of the hierarchies and systems of our global communities. Scaria’s project is part of New Territories: BRICS, Laumeier’s five-year focus on artists from around the globe, and will consist of site-specific works inspired by the constant building flux in New Delhi and the ancient ruins of Cahokia Mounds. Time includes recent photographs, films and sculptures inside the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center, as well as a monumental “totem” of cast scale models of old Delhi domestic architecture in Laumeier’s Outdoor Galleries.

Sculpture of John RogersJohn Rogers (1829–1904) was an American sculptor who produced very popular, relatively inexpensive figurines in the late 1800s. His small genre sculptures, popularly termed “Rogers Groups”, were mass-produced in cast plaster. A total of 80,000 copies of almost 80 Rogers Groups were sold gracing the parlors of homes in the United States and as far away as Chile and Australia. Lt. Col. George Custer and his wife had one when they lived in the Dakota Territory. Often selling for $15 apiece, the figurines were affordable to the middle class. Rogers was inspired by popular novels, poems and prints as well as the scenes he saw around him. Tours scheduled by advance reservation only. Call (314) 615-8800 or email [email protected].
