Page 2: St. Louis County Parks Fall & Winter 2015 Activity Guide

Fall is a beautiful time of year, full of color and outdoor activities for the whole family. St. Louis County is happy to be hosting many outdoor activities through the fall and into the winter. These are the result of hard work and preparation by a very dedicated team in the St. Louis County Parks Department. There will be Fall Hayride events in many of our county parks this year. Some

are historical in nature, taking guests through candlelit historic homes and sharing stories of the rich past of St. Louis County. Many will provide refreshments and live music, and with tickets as low as $7 a person, it’s a fun evening for the whole family.

Keep an eye out for our Halloween events this year too, sponsored by our County Parks throughout the month of October. These include ghost stories at Jefferson Barracks Park, the Haunted Extravaganza in St. Vincent Park and the Halloween Boo-Nanza at the North County Recreation Center. These will include pumpkin races, haunted tours, and of course, Halloween candy for the kids.

As the weather gets cold here in St. Louis County, we’ll welcome visitors from around the region to our Winter Wonderland at Tilles Park. Each year it’s bigger and better, and I can’t wait to take my wife and children to see the lights this winter. I encourage St. Louis County residents to enjoy these active, affordable events with their families and friends.

Yours very truly,

Steven V. Stenger St. Louis County Executive

Did You Know?

The concept of a ghost, also known as a specter, is based on the ancient idea that a person’s spirit exists separately from his or her body, and may continue to exist after that person dies. Because of this idea, many societies began to use funeral rituals as a way of ensuring that the dead person’s spirit would not return to “haunt” the living.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”—John Dewey

Welcome to the August Meeting, we appreciate & Thank David Sherwood & Staff for their continuous support of the Chil-dren’s Garden Club. Has everyone survived the Heat ? how about the plants in your landscape. Today we will discuss this new season we are about to enter, Fall Gardening.

Hope to see you next month at For the Garden @ Haefners Greenhouse 6703 Telegraph Road, topic is All about Bats.

This is also the First meeting of the Fall Session of the Junior Master Gardener – Golden Rays Series. This program is modeled after the highly successful Master Gardner Program and offers Horticultural and Environmental, Science Education, Leadership, and Life skills. Development though fun and creative activities. This program is committed to helping Young people become good gardeners and good citizens so they can make a positive contribution to their community , school and family. To enroll please let us know , or contact us @ (314) 615-8482 – Tonya or Doug. Or Email us @ [email protected] or [email protected]

Will we have any Fall Color of the fi rst crimson leaves of autumn, and learn about fall blooming crocus very similar to the spring blooming crocus. The ravages of heat, storms, drought, and humidity make the late summer garden appear so worn out that the freshness of newly emerging fall crocus and colchicum bulbs, Pansies, our cool weather crop are a breath of fresh air. One glimpse and you’ll suddenly want to bite into a crisp apple, or go on a hayride in a County Park, check it out in our Activity Guide www.stlouisco.com/parks. Some say nature saves her biggest show for fall, but I feel you need to appreciate each season Mother Nature has to give us.

Sculpture of John RogersJohn Rogers (1829–1904) was an American sculptor who produced very popular, relatively inexpensive figurines in the late 1800s. His small genre sculptures, popularly termed “Rogers Groups”, were mass-produced in cast plaster. A total of 80,000 copies of almost 80 Rogers Groups were sold gracing the parlors of homes in the United States and as far away as Chile and Australia. Lt. Col. George Custer and his wife had one when they lived in the Dakota Territory. Often selling for $15 apiece, the figurines were affordable to the middle class. Rogers was inspired by popular novels, poems and prints as well as the scenes he saw around himOpen Dates?
