DIDYOUKNOW?Lone Elk park was once part of the TysonValley Powder Plant used for the testing andstorage of ammunition during WWII. After theWar, the area served as Tyson County Parkand, in 1948, herds of elk and bison wereestablished.

The land was re-acquired by the Federalgovernment during the Korean War. For safetyreasons the wildlife herds were destroyed in1958. However, one lone bull elk survived.

In 1964 St. Louis County re-acquired 405acres of the land and, in 1966, the area’sname was changed from Tyson Park to LoneElk County Park.

Six additional elk were obtained fromYellowstone National Park in 1966 throughthe efforts of children in the Rockwood SchoolDistrict and the West St. Louis County LionsClub.

Construction of the park’s lake was completedby Fred Weber, Inc. at no cost to the County.

On October 17, 1971, Lone Elk County Parkofficially opened to the public

Six bison, acquired from the St. Louis Zoo,were added in July 1973.

In 1986, the World Bird Sanctuary, formerlythe Raptor Rehabilitation and PropagationProject, took over the Visitor Center; however, the facility has since returned to the ParksDepartment.

Adjacent to Lone Elk County Park (on the east)is the Williams Creek Archaeological District, which is listed in the National Register ofHistoric Places.

DIDYOUKNOW?Early explorers passed the present park siteon their treks up the Missouri River. In fact, areference is made in the Journal of Zebulon Pike toa camping area in close proximity to present daySioux Passage Park.

During the 1820s and 1830s, side-wheeled,single-engine river boats passed through the chutelocated north of the park. One such vessel, the Carof Commerce, foundered and sank in this arm ofthe Missouri River in 1832.
