PASTOR’S REFLECTION

Dear Friends,

Today is not only the Lord’s day, it’s also Super Bowl Weekend! After sixteen regular season games and the playoffs it all comes down to just two teams: the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots.

You might be rooting for the youth (Rams coach, Sean McVay, and quarterback, Jared Goff), or you might be rooting for the dynasty (Coach Bellicheck and quarterback, Tom Brady). In either case, sports excites us and inspires us because it is an analogy for life: life is a battle for an ultimate and definitive victory.

As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we know that HE has fought the ultimate battle and achieved the ultimate victory by dying for us and rising from the dead. As St. Paul says in his First Letter to the Corinthians: “God gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Cor 15:57)

As you root for your preferred team this Sunday night recognize that the finite joy of victory in the Super Bowl is only a foretaste of the infinite joy we are made to experience in the victory of Heaven - Go Patriots!!! (……..and Rams! ! ! ! )

Your Pastor, Father O'Hare

How Were the Books of the Bible Selected? Just as God worked through men to write individual books of inspired Scripture, He worked through the authority of the Catholic Church’s Bishops to determine for us what books belong in the Bible. All Christians must admit that their confidence that the Bible is Sacred Scripture – the inerrant and divinely inspired Word of God – stems from the authority of the Catholic Church. The Bible as we have it today did not exist when the Church was first founded (circa A.D. 33). Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, a series of Councils (meetings of Bishops) determined the canon (Rome in 382; Hippo in 393; and Carthage in 397). In A.D. 405, Pope Innocent I approved the current 73-book canon.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your MIND…’ (Luke 10:27)

Since 2007 our parish has been financially supporting a very poor parish in Nicaragua. The parish name is “San Isidro” (St. Isidore) and it is located in the north central rural border area of Nicaragua and Honduras. The pastor’s name is Father Carlos Blandon. You may recall that Father Carlos visited us here last summer for a few weeks. St. Paul says in his letter to the Romans, “We, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another” (Romans 12:5). As one Church we bear a special responsibility to care for the most needy among us. By God’s providence we have been given the privilege to care for our materially poor brothers and sisters in the parish of San Isidro. It is our custom to send a delegation of parishioners to visit the Mission each year. Stay tuned for regular updates on the ways that our prayers and financial support are making a difference, and please continue to be generous in your monthly support of our Nicaragua Mission!
