•  Varlamov made 49 saves in Tuesday's shootout loss to San Jose, falling one shy of his career-best of 50 saves set Feb. 16, 2013 atEdmonton.  Varlamov's 49 stops tied the franchise record for most saves in a HOME game.  Scott Gordon made 49 saves for Quebecat the Colisee on Feb. 4, 1990 vs. Boston.  Varlamov stopped 22-of-23 shots in the first period on Tuesday, tying his career high forsaves in a single period.  Only Patrick Roy, who made 23 saves in a period twice, has ever stopped more shots in one period for theAvalanche. •  Varlamov stopped all 40 shots in a 5-0 victory over the Islanders on Thursday for his first shutout of the season.  It was Varlamov’s14th career shutout and 10th as a member of the Avalanche, moving him into sole possession of third place on the franchise’s all-timelist behind Patrick Roy (37) and David Aebischer (13).  Varlamov’s 40 saves were his most-ever in a shutout, topping his previous highof 34 stops in a 1-0 overtime win against the Predators on March 30, 2013 at Pepsi Center.  Varlamov’s effort was the first 40-saveshutout by an Avalanche goaltender since Nov. 15, 2000, when Roy made 41 stops in a 3-0 win at Anaheim.  In fact, Varly posted justthe fourth 40-plus save shutout in Avalanche history (since 1995-96). BRIERE TALLIES 300TH IN DRAMATIC FASHION Daniel Briere scored his 300th NHL goal on Oct. 13 at Boston, lighting the lamp with under a second left in regulation to give theAvalanche a 2-1 victory.  According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Briere is the first player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to score agame-winning goal with one second left in regulation.  Prior to that, Colorado's latest game-winning goal was scored at 19:52 of thethird period – a mark set by Jan Hejda in a 4-3 victory on April 13, 2013 vs. Vancouver.  Briere’s goal was only the fourth last-secondtiebreaking goal (in regulation) over the last eight seasons.  The other buzzer beaters since 2007-08 were scored by Brad Richards(Dec. 17, 2011 at Phoenix), Drew Doughty (Feb. 1, 2012 vs. Columbus) and David Krejci (Oct. 24, 2013 vs. San Jose).  Briere becamethe 16th active player to reach the 300-goal milestone.
