If he said it was lawful, he would be regarded as a traitor to the Jewish cause and the Jewish religion. If he said it was unlawful, he could be denounced as fomenting rebellion against Rome. Jesus replied: Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.(For Caesar we can substitute the State). This doesnt mean that there are some things that belong to Caesar and others that belong to God, as if reality were divisible into secularand sacred”. It means that an obligation to Caesar stands under and is judged by a paramount obligation: to acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Jesus was implying that there need not be conflict between the demands of the State and those of God. The State has a role, but its power is limited and does not supplement God. From this principle Christians deduced that they could accommodate loyalty to the State. As Christians we have duel citizenship. We are citizens of the country in which we happen to be living or in which we were born. To it we owe many benefits. To its forces of law and order we owe the fact that we are able to live in peace and security. To its public services we owe transport, water, light, etc. To its social provisions we have access to education, medical care, and so on. These benefits mean we are under obligation to the State. The legitimate State has rights, and Christians will respect those rights. We must respect its laws and rulers. We must be responsible citizens, and, as far as we are able, play our part in making the country a good place for all its citizens. Failure to be a good citizen is a failure in Christian duty. To cheat the State is to cheat ones fellow citizens, and to cheat ones fellow citizens is to cheat God. But as Christians we are also citizens of the kingdom of God. To it we owe certain privileges, and to it we also have obligations. In most cases the two responsibilities do not clash. But at times they may. And when they do, Christians will spontaneously know which comes first. Today the State is not so much against God as without God. It no longer bases its laws on Gods laws. This can pose serious dilemmas for Christians - how to be a Christian in a secular world where the laws may often be unchristian. When Jesus said, Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar”, his assumption was that Caesars claim would be just. He wasnt giving Caesar a blank cheque. If it is a case of having to choose one against the other, the Christian has only one choice. As Christians our first and deepest loyalty is to God. To God alone we render worship. In other things we gladly acknowledge and serve the secular powers, praying that they will rule wisely and justly. Christians will strive to be good citizens of their country, and at the same time good citizens of the kingdom of God. They will fail neither in their duty to God nor to their fellow citizens. For a believer, in a sense everything is given to God, even what is given to Caesar. DUEL CITIZENSHIP The question as to whether or not it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar was a very serious one, and it really put Jesus in a spot. If he said it was lawful, he would be regarded as a traitor to the Jewish cause and the Jewish religion. If he said it was unlawful, he could be denounced as fomenting rebellion against Rome. This doesn’t mean that there are some things that belong to Caesar and others that belong to God, as if reality were divisible into “secular” and “sacred”. It means that an obligation to Caesar stands under and is judged by a paramount obligation: to acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Jesus was implying that there need not be conflict between the demands of the State and those of God. The State has a role, but its power is limited and does not supplement God. OUR SCHOOLS BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

It will be three full days of spending time with 15,000 young Catholics from right around Australia to celebrate and learn more about the Catholic Faith. ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Welcome back to term 4, I hope that you enjoyed a sport filled break. Well done to the Tigers for their amazing win in the AFL and to the Storm in the NRL. A lot of supporters came out of the woodwork this year particularly in the yellow and black. Our prayers and best wishes continue to be with Stephanie and Jess Sefton. Steph is progressing well as she nurtures her unborn baby and will be transferring to a Melbourne hospital on Monday. Steph will be away for the rest of the year and Mrs Adele Henderson, who has replaced Steph, will continue in this position for the remainder of the year. Adele is a very experienced teacher and has been well supported by the 3/4 teaching unit and Carmelina Scalora, who will continue to do so over the coming months. Congratulations to Hollie Webster who got engaged during the school holidays to Bret Borserio! This is a very exciting time for them both. Please keep Talli Dawson-Webb’s family in your thoughts and prayers on the sudden death of his uncle. Also a number of families in our community are experiencing sadness and difficult time, and require our prayers of support. Welcome back to Mrs Danielle Cameron from maternity leave who will be working with Prep HW & Yr 1/2 GT one day a week. Congratulations to Louise O’Connor as she becomes a grandmother for the second time within a month. Exciting times for the O’Connor family. Mr Travis Ledwidge has been on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks of this term and will return next week. On Monday 9th October we welcomed the whole staff from St Joseph’s, Cobram. Their visit was to look at a number of approaches to learning and the physical learning environments. Feedback from Lucy Keath, their principal, was extremely positive and appreciative of the way the students and staff welcomed and engaged her staff. Well done everyone. We have the last of our Extra Prep Transitions on Friday. These sessions have enabled our new Preps to come to school in groups of 4 or 5 and work with this year’s Preps. It has been exciting and a great lead into our traditional transition program beginning in week 5. Thank you to the Preps for hosting our guests. Thank you to parents and students for the way you have returned to school this term in summer uniform. The hotter weather is upon us and the need for hats is essential as well as the application of sunscreen prior to coming to school. This Friday the Year 5’s will be attending a CCB ‘Come and Try Day’ to get them thinking about the secondary school experience and their road ahead. Friday is the 20th Annual St Liborius Wine and Cheese night which will take place in the Liborius Centre. A lot of work has gone into making contact with past and present parents to come along and enjoy a very social evening. If you have not attended a Wine and Cheese evening in the past, please make the effort to come along. The evening runs from 7.30 - 9.30pm and our major sponsor of the evening, Eaglehawk IGA, provide a large range of wines for tasting as well as a spread of cheeses and meats that is second to none. Pre-sale tickets are available at the office for $20 or $25 if purchased on the night. There are a number of door prizes and the support from a lot of local businesses adds true value to this exciting fundraiser for our school. Thank you to all the parents who have organised the Wine and Cheese evening. We wish Harry Arnett all the very best as he heads, along with his family, to Portugal to represent Australia in the World Go Kart Championships! We can’t wait to hear all about it. Next Monday 23rd October is a Pupil Free Day as the staff undertake professional development in the processes of writing. Next Wednesday 25th October the children will participate in our Jump Rope For Heart jump off day. More information attached. The school Board will meet on Wednesday 25th October at 6.30pm and will discuss reporting and complete their annual review of school fees, amongst other items. Have a great week Frank Dullard

“Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” - MATTHEW 22:21 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second.

ROSTERS

What a Life! Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging about their fathers.

The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50."

The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words

on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100."

The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon. And it takes eight people

to collect all the money!"
