We have been more or less at capacity (about 30 priests) for the last couple of years so I was happy to get a spot when I did. It s a great location and a great community. Unlike some other students who live in the outer suburbs, we can easily return to the college for lunch, etc, which is also very handy. I m enjoying walking most places (consequently I haven't go a very good handle on the Roman bus network!) and Ive found it a good way to get a break and to become acquainted with the Roman streets, which are tightly packed in, but full of character. The college is also close to the Tiber river (300m away), so during the summer months it has been a great place for a long walk or run and is a bit of an oasis from the foot and car traffic around the CBD. In early October the new academic year will begin and Ill enter into the second year of the doctoral program. I am planning to finish writing the dissertationpart of the program within the next twelve months. Im enjoying the theme and also the process of research. The Australians and Kiwi religious working in Rome continue to meet for a cuppa about 8-9 times per year (at alternating houses) and this has been a great way to meet some of the other Aussies working in Rome. As Christians, we can hardly stop advocating marriage simply to avoid countering contemporary sensibilities, or out of a desire to be fashionable or a sense of helplessness in the face of human and moral failings. We would be depriving the world of values that we can and must offer. It is true that there is no sense in simply decrying present-day evils, as if this could change things. Nor it is helpful to try to impose rules by sheer authority. What we need is a more responsible and generous effort to present the reasons and motivations for choosing marriage and the family, and in this way to help men and women better to respond to the grace that God offers them. 36. We also need to be humble and realistic, acknowledging that at times the way we present our Christian beliefs and treat other people has helped contribute to todays problematic situation. We need a healthy dose of self-criticism. Then too, we often present marriage in such a way that its unitive meaning, its call to grow in love and its ideal of mutual assistance are overshadowed by an almost exclusive insistence on the duty of procreation. Nor have we always provided solid guidance to young married couples, understanding their timetables, their way of thinking and their concrete concerns. At times we have also proposed a far too abstract and almost artificial theological ideal of marriage, far removed from the concrete situations and practical possibilities of real families. This excessive idealization, especially when we have failed to inspire trust in Gods grace, has not helped to make marriage more desirable and attractive, but quite the opposite. 37. We have long thought that simply by stressing doctrinal, bioethical and moral issues, without encouraging openness to grace, we were providing sufficient support to families, strengthening the marriage bond and giving meaning to marital life. We find it difficult to present marriage more as a dynamic path to personal development and fulfilment than as a lifelong burden. We also find it hard to make room for the consciences of the faithful, who very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations, and are capable of carrying out their own discernment in complex situations. Continued from last week - Letter from Fr Jake Mudge

My normal residential college, San Carlo, is going well. We have been more or less at capacity (about 30 priests) for the last couple of years so I was happy to get a spot when I did. It’s a great location and a great community. Unlike some other students who live in the outer suburbs, we can easily return to the college for lunch, etc, which is also very handy. I’m enjoying walking most places (consequently I haven't go a very good handle on the Roman bus network!) and I’ve found it a good way to get a break and to become acquainted with the Roman streets, which are tightly packed in, but full of character. The college is also close to the Tiber river (300m away), so during the summer months it has been a great place for a long walk or run and is a bit of an oasis from the foot and car traffic around the CBD.

In early October the new academic year will begin and I’ll enter into the second year of the doctoral program. I am planning to finish writing the ‘dissertation’ part of the program within the next twelve months. I’m enjoying the theme and also the process of research.

The Australians and Kiwi religious working in Rome continue to meet for a cuppa about 8-9 times per year (at alternating houses) and this has been a great way to meet some of the other Aussies working in Rome. One of the Australian Marist brothers working in Rome, Dennis Cooper FMS, runs the Roman sabbatical program for the brothers and has asked me to come and meet and speak to the current group in a couple of weeks time, which will be a good experience.

This is just a short update, but I thought I’d try to get it together before the time got away again. It comes with prayerful best wishes to you all.

  • PRAYER FOR THE HEALING OF VICTIMS OF ABUSE

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only son to save us by the blood of his cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have

been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them.

Hear our cries as we agonise over the harm done to our brothers and sisters.

Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith:

Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and

transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility

and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen (Prayer: U.S. Bishops Conference)

With St Liborius, St Stephen & St Augustine, let us be a spiritual benefactor to

each other in prayer, especially for the health and well-being of:

Pray for our seminarians: Dean Klayford Bongat, Adi Indra, Jackson Saunders & DJ Suguitan.

May they rest in the peace of Christ. Amen.

In faith and hope let us pray for those who

have gone before us and those whose

    anniversaries occur around this time.

  • ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Wow what a term! Week 9 already. There have been a lot of exciting things happening around St Liborius PS the past week. Great News - It is great to announce that Mrs. Cameron and Mrs Darmody are both expecting babies in the new year. We wish Danielle & Josh and Alannah & Jeremy all the very best over the coming months. Prep/1/2 excursion - The Prep/1/2 excursion was a huge hit. All the children involved had a fantastic day out. They were immersed in science experiments, studies of our solar system and the history of Bendigo through pottery. To top this all off they got to make their own creative piece of pot-tery and take it home. It was great to hear wonderful feedback from the venues about how engaged our students were. This was fantastic. It has been a busy time for our our Prep - 2 students, they are off again for an arts immersion on Thursday to the Ulumbarra Theatre to view the show Snugglepot & Cuddlepie. Reach Rookies - Last week the Yr 5/6 students participated in a workshop run by the Reach Foundation. Through some special funding, each class participated in a workshop that focused on peer dynamics and confidence. More details attached. St Liborius National Study Tour - On Monday we welcomed 14 participants from the St Liborius National Study Tour. St Liborius Primary School was their first stop. They observed Investigation time in the Prep-2 area, ERP study and a class meeting in the Yr 3-6 area. All participants were excited to see the pedagogy we follow here at St Liborius PS. They will be observing a number of different schools in Melbourne and Adelaide over the coming days. A big thank you must go out to Mrs Patterson, Mr Waters and Mrs Webb who are leading this tour. ROSTERS

    What a Life!

Three Pastors in the south were having lunch in a diner. One of them said, "You know, since summer started I've been having trouble with them flying bats in my

loft and attic at church. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to scare them off.

Another pastor said "Yes, me too. I've got hundreds living in my belfry and in the narthex attic. I've even had the place fumigated, and they won't go

    away!"

The third pastor said, "I baptized all mine, made them members of the church, and we haven't seen one back since!"
