EMPOWERMENT

Prior to the coming of the Holy Spirit the apostles were living in

hiding in the upper room. A great task had been entrusted to them,

yet they had neither the strength nor the will to begin it. But after the

coming of the Holy Spirit they were changed people. They left their

hiding place, and set out courageously to preach the Gospel.

What was it that the Spirit did for them?

In promising the Spirit Jesus said to them, “You will receive power

when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my

witnesses not only in Jerusalem, but also to the ends of the earth.”

The key word here is the word power. Power was precisely what they

needed. At present they felt completely powerless. They were

crippled with fear and a sense of inadequacy. They needed someone

to empower them.

Empowerment is one of the “in” words nowadays. And with good

reason. We have seen what individuals or groups of people have been

able to do when someone empowered them. We have seen what a

good motivator can do for a football team.

What does empowerment mean? In the first place, it means to give or

delegate power or authority to someone, to authorise someone. This

wouldn't apply to the apostles - they had already been given that by

Jesus.

In the second place, it means to enable someone to do something.

This is the usual sense in which the word empowerment is used, and

it certainly applies to the apostles at Pentecost.

When people are empowered, they become able and willing to take

charge of their situation. They no longer wait for someone else to do

it for you. They accept that they and they alone have to do something

about it.

The Holy Spirit empowered the apostles. He came down on them in

the form of wind and fire. Wind and fire are symbols of power. Wind

has the power to move. Fire has the power to refine and transform.

The power they symbolise here is the power of God.

The Spirit provided the apostles with the energy, the courage, the

love and the passion to get on with the task Christ had given

them. Yet, even though the Holy Spirit would help them, he

wouldn’t do it for them.

After the coming of the Spirit the apostles were changed men.

They came our of their shells. This is the real miracle of

Pentecost. However, we mustn't think that the change in them

came about in an instant. It had to be a gradual thing. It had to

be a growth process. And growth can be slow and painful.

We too need someone to empower us so that we are able to

take charge of our lives, and live them responsibly. This

means being willing to change what needs to be changed. But

we especially need empowerment in order to witness to our

Christian faith. The power that changed the apostles is

available to us too.

The Church is invited to live the mystery of Pentecost as a

community in which fatalism is challenged, in which every

child of God should be empowered to do more than he/she

ever believed possible. St Paul says that the Holy Spirit is “no

cowardly spirit”. The Holy Spirit can breathe confidence into

us all.

REFLECTION

St Paul warns us against self-indulgence.

Self-indulgence leads to fighting, jealousy,

cruelty, meanness, and revenge.

Things such as these make life miserable.

Paul urges us to allow ourselves to be guided by the Holy

Spirit.

If we do, then our lives will be characterised by

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

These are beautiful things and make life joyful.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.

With St Liborius, St Stephen & St Augustine, let us be a spiritual benefactor to each other in prayer, especially for the health and well-being of:

Pray for our seminarians: Dean Klayford Bongat, Adi Indra, Jackson Saunders, Nathan Verallo & DJ Suguitan.

May they rest in the peace of Christ. Amen.

In faith and hope let us pray for those who have gone before us and those whose anniversaries occur around this time.

Report from the meeting of the St Liborius Parish Pastoral Team

12th May, 2017 The inaugural meeting the Parish Pastoral Team was held on 12th May 2017, at the Parish Centre. Present were: Fr Antony Joseph, Tracey Cole, Anne-Maree Holden, Chris O’Brien, Frank Dullard, Michael Nolan, John Pallotta, Brian Bourke, Margaret Watson. Father Antony welcomed the members to the meeting and led us in prayer. Tracey Cole was nominated as Chair and Margaret Watson as Secretary. Both accepted the nomination and Tracy led the meeting from that point. Bishop’s visitation: Planning will soon star t for Bishop Tomlinson’s visitation to the parish in November, 2017. He will be with us for three days and Father Antony intends that parishioners will have an opportunity to meet Bishop Les during that time. The Bishop will also visit both schools in the parish as well as nursing homes. We look forward to welcoming him to our parish. Visitor from Paderborn: Another visitor , although not until next year, is the Archbishop of Paderborn, in Germany. The first priest on the Bendigo goldfields was Fr Henry Backhaus, who came from the parish of St Liborius in Paderborn. He bought the land to enable a church and school to be built in Eaglehawk and named them for St Liborius. To recognise Fr Backhaus’ establishment of this parish, the Paderborn Archbishop will be coming to Eaglehawk during his visit to Australia in December 2018, and will commemorate the 150th anniversary of our Parish of St Liborius. School Report: Frank Dullard, Pr incipal, distr ibuted a copy of “Future Directions”, a document to guide St Liborius school for the next four years. Students, staff and parents all contributed to this document which covers areas such as Catholic Identity, Wellbeing, Leadership and Learning. School Mass: Father Antony suggested a school Mass to be held once a term on a weekend with school students, staff and parents involved in the preparation and presentation. It is hoped that this will occur during Term 3. General Business: Michael Nolan spoke about the “dungeon” being dug out under the Parish Centre. He is awaiting a council permit before further excavation can proceed. Father expressed appreciation at the generous donations of time and labour that has allowed the work to reach this point. There was also a general discussion on various properties owned by the parish. Coordinator’s Report: There are 23 groups within our par ish and Margaret Watson hopes to contact these within the next few weeks. Up to date contact details will be published for each group, along with date and times of their meetings. Parish website: www.stlibor iuscatholicpar ish.wordpress.com is the address of the parish website. Included on the website is a link to our weekly bulletins. If you are travelling on a weekend and miss Mass at St Liborius, you might like to check the bulletin online to keep up with parish news and events. We hope to add further updates to make it a current reflection of our parish. Any other business: The Parish Pastoral Team is representative of parishioners and all parishioners are encouraged to put forward any agenda items for discussion at PPT meetings. Please contact one of the members, or leave a message at the parish office and your suggestions will be added to the next agenda. Next Meeting: Tuesday, 13th June, at the Par ish Centre.

OUR SCHOOLS BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

MARIST COLLEGE Dear Parents/Guardians, “Welcome to Marist” - Over the last five weeks we have been opening our doors to people considering enrolling their child at Marist in 2018. At learning walks, explore Marist and the recent Foundation Information Evening the phrase “Welcome to Marist” is often my opening line and a line used by many of our students and staff. Our students, when they act as guides or walk with people around our school will often greet adults with this same simple phrase. “Welcome to Marist”. It has such power as it not only offers the guest a genuine message they are valued in our presence but also the speaker shows a strong sense of ownership and belonging to our new Marist learning community. Foundation Information Evening - We had a large number of prospective parents attend this event on Wednesday evening. It was an evening with a difference with our guests being sent on a scavenger hunt through La Valla. We also had six foundation students come on the night and spend time in the space showing how a provocation session works. Four of our Year 10 mentors came as babysitters. There was a noticeable buzz of excitement amongst our guests. Sustainability Finalists (x3) - We have received news recently that we have been accepted as finalists in three separate awards relating to our approach to sustainability through our buildings and learning model. The winners in these awards will be announced in coming weeks. Solid weeks of learning - As we pass through the middle of Term Two the coming weeks offer some important opportunities for consolidated learning. Examinations are rapidly approaching for students in Years 9 and 10 and there are also many projects nearing completion in other year levels. VCE preparations - Our preparation for the VCE remain on track with all our course outlines being submitted today to fulfill our registration requirements. Over recent weeks our Educators have been writing the courses for almost 40 VCE and VET subjects we will be offering in 2018. Details around the VCE will be explained at our VCE Parent Toolkit Evening on 14 June. Jubilarian - Last Fr iday, Mr. John O’Connor was acknowledged as a Jubilarian and recognized for his 25 years in Catholic education. Yours sincerely, Darren McGregor - Principal

ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Reconciliation Week - This week we celebrate Reconciliation week which was launched last Friday with Sorry Day. The prayers and liturgy created by the children in class were presented at assembly. Throughout the week the children will continue to focus on indigenous perspectives and conclude with our St Liborius Fire Carriers attending mass at the Cathedral on Friday along with other students from our Western Deanery at our Diocesan Reconciliation Mass. Combined Staff/School Board Meeting - Wednesday night both the staff and school board combined their meetings to create the opportunity to work as a whole school community in developing a deeper understanding of the roles everyone plays in the education of our students. Fitness campaign - The children continue with their fitness campaign before school. Stations are set up around the new running track and with some groovy and motivating music playing in the background, the children complete as many circuits they could before the bell. School Production - With only 3 weeks to go, we are starting to get to the pointy end of the production. Tickets are available at the office and I would encourage families to purchase their tickets soon as interest so far is beginning to outweigh the number of tickets available. Don’t miss out!! The Queen's Birthday Weekend is coming up and with the Bishop’s holiday attached to the Friday (9th June) it makes it an extra long weekend. The YMCA have committed to run full day care on all of St Liborius Pupil Free Days and Bishop Holidays. If you require this service for Friday 9th June please contact the YMCA directly to book in. Next week we welcome Amy Gillett to the Year 1/2KS class. Amy is a 4th year student at La Trobe and will be with us for the next 3 weeks. Welcome Amy. Have a wonderful week Frank Dullard - Principal

ROSTERS

What a Life! I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian

Never answer an anonymous letter

It's lonely at the top; but you do eat better

I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it

Always go to other people's funerals, or they won't go to yours

No one is listening until you make a mistake

Give me ambiguity or give me something else
