“Football at the Firs”

__This evening we have pleasure in welcom-ing our players, their families, friends and sup-porters together with a number of people whohave helped the Club during the past season.__In the worst season for bad weather in liv-ing memory a combination of bad pitches andirregular fixtures meant that there was littlescope to get any continuity with either train-ing or play and as a result games were playedin groups with more than a quarter of theLeague programme being condenses into thelast five weeks of the season. These conditionsalso had implications off the field as revenueforecasts were disrupted by the postponementof matches and this together with the cancel-lation of two cup competitions meant areduced number of games and overall thatthere was less income available for re-use.Viewed purely on results the season was againa disappointing one: In the League by finish-ing in nineteenth position meant that wedropped one place for the second consecutiveseason whilst there was significant progress inonly one of the four cup competitions thattook place. A consequence of these factors

was that we played only fifty-one matches, the lowest number since leaving the CountyLeague five years ago.__Full details of all results appear elsewherein this review but it is worth noting that ofthe twenty-seven defeats suffered in the sea-son, ten were by a single goal margin and hadthose league defeats been turned into drawsthen the side would have finished in four-teenth position and further had the ten leaguedraws also been converted into wins by anextra goal then we should have risen toeighth place. __We apologise if these opening commentsare not the cheerful introduction you expect-ed, however, neither should you be under thedelusion that there was nothing positiveabout the season. Certain results gave partic-ular pleasure in particular the 8-2 victory overCorby Town which ended the club’s worst everrun of results, the 4-1 defeat of RothwellTown which went someway to avenging therecord freak mauling they gave us away and,of course, the Boxing Day draw at the PilotField.

__We shall not single out individual playershere as undoubtably those making the presen-tations this evening will have something tosay on that subject, however, we must men-tion Keith Miles who this season broke WayneFarrier’s three year old record for the highestnumber of appearances and as you will see inour records section Keith now holds both theclub’s senior appearance and goal scoringrecords.__Unfortunately, we must return to theweather’s effect on the programme as we lookat the second and under eighteen teams thatstarted the season in our name. By Januaryour under eighteen team had played just sixleague games having been stalled for over twomonths waiting to play a County Youth Cuptie at Arundel before that competition wassuspended and eventually abandoned. Aftermuch heart searching, the prospect of a fullprogramme of Sunday games plus a numberof long midweek trips eventually forced thedecision to withdraw the side from theSouthern Division of the M.U.S.H. Kent YouthLeague: Undoubtably this is a quality compe-tition which prepares players well for senioradult football, however, competing in it iscomparatively a very costly exercise and ourgeographical position means that it involvesmore travelling than the second side wouldface competing in Sussex County League.__Similarly, the second team’s league pro-gramme was held up whilst they repeatedlytried to play a second round tie at SteyningTown in the County League’s Reserve SectionCup which they eventually won comfortablybefore going out of the competition in thenext round. Notwithstanding the net effectwas that by mid-March the side had playedjust thirteen of their scheduled thirty leaguefixtures. Again there was much debate whenthe League suggested that we might like towithdraw the side and the decision was onlymade when a further series of postponementsraised the number of games to be played tothree or four a week. The side had already

produced one regular first team player inDavid Henham and it has been pleasing to seethree more of the side performing well whencalled up in the closing weeks of the season:Hopefully we can keep the talents of DanielBeecroft, Tony Cornelius and Richard Devineas they all look more than capable of develop-ing into good senior players.__In last season’s review we said that wehoped to be here this year to report on theprogress of the ‘management buy out’; well,we are now that twelve months on and wecertainly are still here. We have certainlylearned alot in that time and have provedthat the club can be run on economics lines. The introduction by the Football Associationof a financial compliance unit has started toreveal some terrible irregularities with clubsbeing found to have massive ‘hidden’ debts, thankfully we are not one of them. In fact wehope that we may start to benefit from theseinvestigations since the compliance elementwill mean that all clubs will now have to paytheir VAT accounts and all wages will be nettof tax and national insurance which has dis-advantaged clubs like ourselves when someothers have been making gross cash in handpayments. The season was the last of StamcoTimber’s term as main sponsors and we mustthank them for their past help, we are nowactively seeking a replacement who will joinwith Hastings Direct who this season becameour shirt sponsors for the next two years. __In closing these notes, we should like toexpress our appreciation of the support givenby our Patron Leon Shepperdson and of thehelp given over the past year by so many peo-ple. Once again, we are not going to be spe-cific because of the inherent danger of unin-tentionally hurting someone by missing themoff the list. Accordingly, we should like tooffer a big vote of thanks to all of those thathave been a part of the past year.

GOALS, GOALSFollowing the examples of team mates Carleton Chatelier, Adam Flanagan, Simon Fox and Craig Willard,Dominic Barclay scored on his debut but became the first player to record a hat trick on his first appear-ance, albeit he required extra time to do so in the first round Dr.Martens Cup tie at Folkestone Invicta. His second hat trick against Rothwell Town was our third of the season, as Carelton Chatelier had ear-lier scored one when we entertained Corby Town, and our fifty-fifth since attaining senior status in1989. Four members of the present squad figure in our all-time hat-trick table:

__The League programme was completed to schedule, well at least on the first Saturday in May, in all threedivisions without the need for double headers, six point matches or two games in a day as happened in theRyman League for at least one club. Margate duly won the Championship and are promoted to theNationwide Conference and will meet Dr.Martens Cup winners Worcester City, who defeated Crawley Town4-1 on aggregate, in the new season’s opener for the Victoria (Championship) Cup. Coming back from theConference are Kettering Town whilst that competition sees an exchange with the Football League of twoformer Southern League clubs as Rushden & Diamonds replace Barnet in Division Three. __Relegated from the Premier Division are Clevedon Town and Halesowen Town, who are expected togo to the Western Division, whilst it is anticipated that Dorchester Town and Fisher Athletic will come tothe Eastern Section. Replacing them are Newport and Chelmsford City together with Hinckley Unitedand Tiverton Town.__Finishing in the relegation places are Bromsgrove Rovers, who four years ago were playing in theConference, and Paget Rangers in the Western Division together with Sittingbourne and SpaldingUnited. However, with the future in doubt of a number of clubs - particularly Baldock Town and WitneyTown - only time will tell whether any will survive. Certainly there is no joy the other way as there are plen-ty of new applicants ready to fill their places: Favourites to come into the Eastern Division are Andover andChatham Town whilst Swindon Supermarine and a Screwfix Western League side are expected in theWest.

5 YEARS AGO (1996)The first team finished runners-up to Peacehaven& Telscombe in Division One of the Unijet SussexCounty Football1 League for the second consec-utive season and in so doing registered a higherpoints total than the previous season’s champi-ons. The Champions suffered just one leaguedefeat that season and that was when they werebeaten here in front of a crowd of 1033.However, the overall performance was enough togain the club entry into the Dr.Martens SouthernLeague. Keith Miles marked his return to the clubby top scoring with a record breaking tally of 52goals some 35 ahead of second placed CraigWillard who then graced the number eleven shirt.Defeat on the last day of the league season costthe second team the title in the Premier Divisionof the County League Reserve Section, however, four days later they retained the Reserve SectionCup.

10 YEARS AGO (1991)In only their second season as a senior club, thefirst team finished in tenth position in DivisionTwo of the Sussex County League. In an other-wise unremarkable season the side reached thefinal of their divisional cup where they lost 0-3,after extra time, to Chichester City atBroadbridge Heath, however, this was theirfourth match in seven days and their thirdgame to go to extra time in five days! In an actof crass intransigence, the League insisted ontheir Good Friday morning Final despite ourMonday night semi-final with Redhill beingdrawn and replayed on Wednesday and yet itwas still only March! Peter Emmanuel was topscorer with fifteen goals. The second team fin-ished eighth in the County League ReserveSection East and they only missed out on aplace in the Quarter-Finals of the SussexIntermediate Cup when they lost by the oddgoal of seven in extra time away to Sidlesham’sfirst team.

15 YEARS AGO (1986)The first team won the Southern CountiesCombination Championship by a point from ForestOld Boys. The side also lifted the HastingsIntermediate Cup. Despite not playing a full sea-son for the club, Keith Miles was leading scorerwith 26 goals with John Cornelius second afternetting eleven. The second team who could onlyfinish in eighth place in the Premier Division ofthe Eastbourne & Hastings League did reach theFinal of the League’s Challenge Cup.

20 YEARS AGO (1981)The first team finished third in the PremierDivision of the Eastbourne & Hastings League andreached the Final of the Hastings IntermediateCup where they lost to Hastings Town reserves bya lone goal at Bulverhythe. Leading goal scorer forthe season was John Cornelius with 32 goals,Terry Henham being runner-up with twenty.Another familiar face around the club was thesecond team’s top scorer, Colin Henham netting28 as they became Champions of Division Two,losing just one of their twenty matches, to gainpromotion to Division 1 (East).

25 YEARS AGO (1976)The club’s only side had completed their first sea-son in Division One of the Eastbourne & HastingsLeague where they finished fourth of thirteenclubs, five points behind Champions St.Michaels.Of the twenty-four league games played, the sidehad won sixteen and drawn two with eighty-onegoals scored and thirty-one conceded. Matchesthis season had been played at Bulverhythe butthis was to be the last year of Council pitches asthe club’s ground at Pannel Lane was opened forthe next campaign.
