  • Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrow-ful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

This weekend marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week! The week will kick off with a student Mass followed by a Spaghetti dinner/Art Auction. All of the art was created by our students. We also open our doors to anyone interested in learning more about all that we have to offer at St. Laurence Catholic School at our Move that Bus Extreme Makeover reveal on Sunday from 1-3. In addition, there are many activ-ities and events throughout the week as we celebrate Catholic schools. On Monday, our stu-dents will be making homemade dog/cat treats for the animals at An-derson Animal Shelter. They will be visiting the school on Thursday to present to our students in our first Community Life presentation. These will become a new monthly presentation as we invite various profes-sionals in the community in to share what a day in their life looks like. We also invite our parents in on Wednesday for lunch followed by a talent show presented by our students. The week will culminate in our PTC Bowling event on Saturday. Its definitely an exciting time to be a Tiger! Our 5th grade boys basket-ball team ended their season as the Tri County Confer-ence champions. In the conference tournament, they left it all on the court in a 28-26 loss to St. Peters giving them 2nd place. We are so proud of our boys and thank their coach, J.J. Kelly, for a great season! This week we began the Gold-en Spatula Challenge! Each day, the table with the best behavior receives the golden stick. The class with the most at the end of the month receives the Golden Spatula trophy for the month and the royal treat-ment during lunch one day! Just another way we focus on positive choices at St. Laurence! Registration is open for next school year! If you know of a family who is

interested in a faith-based education that is second to none, please have them contact me! Id love to meet them! I hope all of the families in our Parish have a blessed week! Wendy

February 14th (Lent) is coming! What is Lent? Lent is the forty-day liturgical season of fasting, special prayer and almsgiv-ing in preparation for Easter. What are you doing for Lent this year? Ask Catholics what they're doing for Lent this year, and they'll probably tell you that they are giving up a favorite food, a favorite pastime or anything else they really love but isn't essential in their lives. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers our desires. It is a form of fasting. It is a form of penance. It promotes spir-itual growth. If you're giving up something for Lent, that's great. But think also about the possibility of doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. Look for ways that you can increase your knowledge of your faith, strengthen your spiritu-al life or perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work, in your parish or in your community.

Religious Education Subs Needed! We are short staffed and could use a little extra help periodically in our Kindergarten through Sixth Grade Classrooms. Religious Education Classes are on Wednesday evenings, from 6-7:15 pm. If interested, please contact Briana Collins at 847-468-6900.

Vocations Corner: Like a Child Before the Teacher When praying for clarity in discernment, it can be helpful to reflect upon a method of prayer that was practiced by St. Ignatius of Loyola. It is said that when he would go to prayer he would often envision himself before Christ in prayer; much like a child who is present before a teacher. This is a beautiful way to view prayer because it helps us recognize that we arent the ones in charge. At the same time, it helps us to focus on the fact that we have to be receptive in order for prayer to make a difference in our lives. To put this into perspective, it wouldnt work to well if a child went into class one morning thinking that they had all of the answers. So too, if a child didnt trust what the teacher was presenting to them, then not much learning or growth would occur. Just as a child would fail to learn if they didnt humbly submit to the guidance of their teacher, we wont grow in our spiritual lives if we try to tell Christ whats best for us when we pray! So the next time that you seek Gods guidance in your life, open up your heart and dont resist what you hear. Remember who the teacher is. Trust in His knowledge, and allow yourself to be transformed by the knowledge that you acquire.

Authority is seen negatively by many, perhaps most, in today's culture. This perception is the result of humans misusing authority, lording it over people, having an undesirable impact on their personal, profes-sional, and civic lives. So when we read in today's Gospel that Jesus "taught them as one having authority," we might initially bristle. Of course, the authority that is attributed to Jesus is different. This is divine authority. God, the author of all, acts out of love for all. God respected the people's request for a prophet in the time of Moses. They promised to listen to him and to adhere to God's laws, knowing that the law was created for their good. This is the sort of adherence of which Saint Paul speaks as well when he tells the Christian community in Corinth to ad-here to the Lord without distraction. As people who commit to living and growing in faith, we give God authority over our lives, knowing that God will guide us to truth, life, and love.
