TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — There is no salva on through anyone else (Acts 4:8-12).

Psalm — The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone (Psalm 118).

Second Reading — See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God (1 John 3:1-2).

Gospel — The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11-18). The English transla on of the Psalm Responses from the Lec onary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna onal Commis-sion on English in the Liturgy Corpora on. All rights reserved.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

This Fourth Sunday of Easter is tradi onally referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.” It is some mes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal advancement, o en at the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Many of our customs surrounding cri cal illness come from an quity, and yet a tudes have certainly changed. Death was an all too-familiar presence then, and people tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives, se le their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared was sudden death. It was dreaded and never discussed.

The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts from the me are consoling and posi ve, and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from Roman pagan prac ce; it was home based and family centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death, but they were terrified by the dead. Chris ans, on the other hand, consoled their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrec on. The goal was to assure the sick person of God’s love, and that the es that bind the dead and the living would endure.

Psalm 118 Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His mercy endures for ever. “Some mes I sing at Liturgy because it seems so right, natural, my right and my duty. I hear the whole assembly singing! The tune is good and we know it! The words could be called poetry! And all together we’re rehearsing the lives we were bap zed to live.”

Pastoral Musicians Gra tude to the Liturgical Choir for leading the singing at the 5:00 Mass this weekend. We have rehearsal on Wednesday, April 29th at 7:30. Tenors come early Junior Choir does not have rehearsal because the Caritas Choir is performing this Tuesday. Funeral Choir has rehearsal with a light lunch on Monday, April 27th at 10:30 Caritas Choir has their Spring program at Westlake Village this Tuesday, April 28th at 7:15.

Denise volunteered to be a Good Shepherd catechist because she wanted to become involved at St. Lad’s and she loves children. Six years ago Denise became an aide for 3-6 years old and then, 3 years ago, she became a teacher for the 3-6 year olds. Some of Denise’s favorite parts of this ministry are the “hands on” program which helps the children learn and understand Jesus as well as gain prac cal life tools, seeing the children’s friendships grow with each other, and their amazing responses to the lessons. The blessings for Denise include a sense of belonging to the St. Lad’s community, the love the children give her and she gives them, and the wonderful friendships she has developed with the other catechists and aides. Denise shares, “I would encourage you to volunteer at St. Lad’s because it is such a wonderful parish to “belong” to, full of so many kind and friendly people who share the same faith and goals you do.” “We as humans need to ‘belong.’ St. Lad’s is a great community where your needs are met and you can meet the needs of others,” Denise adds. “This brings you closer to Jesus and strengthens your faith.”

Thank you, Denise! If you’d like to recommend a parishioner for this spotlight who has generously shared their gi s and talents in our parish or in our community,

please contact Martha Bober at [email protected].

Family Perspec ves Fourth Sunday of Easter

Like Jesus the Good Shepherd, Chris an families do not run away and abandon each other when the wolves of life a ack. Faith, loyalty, standing firm and sacrificing our lives for each other builds bonds that can withstand any challenge. In fact, solidarity in struggles makes families stronger.

We are happy to announce that Keith Jenkins and Dennis Conrad have pe oned the Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon for Diaconate Ordina on. It is the responsibility of the Church to present to the Bishop suitable

candidates for Ordina on. It is the Bishop’s responsibility to weigh the recommenda ons of those in charge of forma on as well as the larger Church community. Through this no ce the members of St. Ladislas Parish are given the opportunity to offer their personal input on the suitability of these candidates for ordina on either directly to the Bishop or to me as Pastor of the parish. Your rela onship to these men during their years of forma on give your input a special importance. We ask your prayerful support during these final days of discernment and prepara on.
