COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SMALL BEGINNINGS You would be familiar with Paul Kelly’s song “From Little Things, Big Things Grow”, which is used in the advertisement for Industry Superannuation. The scriptures also have a similar message in Zachariah (4.10) where we are told “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin”. All great achievements, all the best schools, all the biggest companies, the Catholic Church and every other worldwide institution had very small beginnings. To develop something great you usually have to start small. This generation of students benefit from our great Parish schools which also had small, humble beginnings. When I started working in Port Macquarie in 1975 the original school had less than 200 students enrolled. Today St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools have over 2,400 students enrolled in our four schools. Visitors from other states and systems marvel at what we have created from the great technical workshop of Newman Senior Technical College to the wonderful Higher School Certificate results achieved by students at MacKillop Senior College and St Joseph’s Regional College. We always have to assure these visitors that it has been a 40 year project to create what they see today. The author, Michael Herbert, points out that we can also improve our life by the little things we do. He gives the following examples: • offering a helping hand to a stranger that turns into a lifelong friendship;

• sharing things with others helps us to become more generous;

• taking a few risks helps us to grow in confidence and be less intimidated by our fears;

• writing a ‘to do’ list at the start of every day can help to be more organised, in control and less

stressed; and

• doing some exercise a couple of times a week can lead to improved fitness, better health and greater sense of wellbeing.

Schools are places which are designed to help young people begin their learning for life with little challenges. As they progress through each Year level we have the pleasure of seeing them grow in confidence and achieve great things. The important thing is to get started and then persevere. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE On Wednesday, staff, Parish and community members gathered for the St Thomas Becket Chapel official opening.

I commend to you my speech from the opening ceremony.

On behalf of Fr Donnelly, Parish Priest of St Agnes’ Parish, Fr James Foster, Chaplain of St Joseph’s Regional College, dignitaries and members of the College community I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all present today for the official opening of St Thomas Becket Chapel. Today we also especially welcome the family and friends of members of the College community who have passed away during their time with us. Our Memorial Garden will celebrate the lives of Kerrie Badewitz, James Kilpatrick, Jessica Sawyer, Ian Potts and Robert Clarke. May they always hold a special place in our hearts. Thomas Becket was invested as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162 and remained so until his death in 1170 by the swords of four Knights of his once closest friend, King Henry II. Once being reluctantly appointed to the positon of Archbishop, Becket the unfailing patriot, pleasure loving courtier and Chancellor of Henry, could not be equally loyal to both God and King. Indeed, we know that Becket’s decision not to play out his role as a pawn to enhance Henry’s ambitions of controlling the Church, ultimately led to Henry “ridding himself of his turbulent priest” and reluctantly ordering Becket’s assassination. Historians tell us that Becket remained steadfast in his conviction, that as the priest of God, and in the name of Jesus and the protection of the Church, he was ready to embrace death. Becket was canonized 3 years later by Pope Alexander III. Our students may well ask what relevance and learnings can they take from such a man who lived almost a millennia ago. We cannot deny Becket’s sense of resolve, loyalty and courage as he faced his death in the name of Christ. Yet, it is not his martyrdom alone that inspires us today to make the world a better place. Becket reminds us that as members of St Joseph’s Regional College, we have a duty to show leadership and be good citizens as well as being attentive to our relationship with God. Certainly Becket carried out his civil and clerical duties with much resolve and great acumen. He always strived for excellence, but was also very human in that he had to overcome bouts of self-doubt and feelings of jealousy due to his common Saxon ancestry. Nonetheless, it was Becket’s radical conversion to walking with Christ which ultimately sculpted him to become the best person he could be; despite the obstacles and pressures he encountered along the way. Finally, in a very real way, Becket reminds us that there are times when the laws of the State can challenge the very fabric of our religious beliefs. Today in Kenya, Syria and South Sudan we see very extreme examples where Christians in the Third World suffer severe oppression or poverty. Here we can make a very real difference by praying for

these people and supporting Caritas and Catholic Mission in their great work. More closely to home, for us living in the First World, these challenges are often more subtle and sometimes less visible expressions of governments’ policies, the power of the media and injustices in the marketplace that undermine the dignity of people. In this way we are challenged to see the face of Christ in people we meet each day, ensuring that we are kind and caring to all. Indeed, Becket encourages us to be attentive to what we see as unjust in our contemporary world and respond lovingly with our grounding in Faith and the Gospel values we proclaim. The Community of St Joseph’s Regional College is indeed very privileged to have St Thomas Becket as our Chapel’s Patron. Words of Thanks There are many people who have made a significant contribution to making our Chapel a reality. To Fr Donnelly, Ms Nora Swain and Mr Jim O’Brien , thank you for your ongoing attentiveness and support of this project. I would also like to thank Matthew Rourke for his project management and the quality of Paul Marshall’s work in constructing our very tasteful and versatile Chapel. Thank you also to John Sprague and Martin Loane who have done so much to beautify the Memorial Garden and Chapel outside area. To Mrs Donna Eames who designed our beautiful invitation card. Thank you to Mrs Bronwyn Shipton, Mrs Laura VonHoldt and Mr Ben Kelly with the support of our Year 11 Hospitality students for providing an afternoon tea. To Mrs Anne O’Brien former Principal of St Joseph’s Regional College for her vision and the excellent foundation she had set at the College which enabled us to complete the Chapel.

I would also like to thank families, the Parish Education and Finance Councils, students, and the Catholic Women’s League for their generous donations. To Helen, for a College project to be successful, a key staff member taking stewardship is an essential ingredient. Thank you for all of your hard and creative work during this time. To Fr James for his ongoing devotion to the building of our Chapel; Fr James, you have been the Chapel’s “Spiritual” project manager. At the beginning of 2013, the notion of a Chapel was all but a figment of our imaginations, and without your sense of vision and attentiveness, we would not be celebrating this very worthy addition to our College community.

Subject and Excursion Fees I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be ’.

As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid and outstanding library books have not been returned. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement.

With regard to major projects in Timber Technologies & Metal Technologies, these fees must be paid prior to major works being released.

END OF YEAR PROGRAM

Year 7-11 Exams In an effort to keep students engaged in learning for a greater proportion of Term 4, Semester 2, Year 7-11 examinations are being conducted from Wednesday, 3 rd December (Week 9) to Tuesday, 9 th December (Week 10) for Years 7-10 while Year 11 exams will continue to Friday, 12 th December. Having the exams later in the term has proven to be very successful as students were on task for longer and we made best use of the teaching and learning time in Term 4. These dates have been advertised in the parent calendar. A copy of the exam timetable is included in this newsletter.

Post-Exam Student Leave From Wednesday, 10 th December to Friday, 12 th December three Post-Exam Student Leave non-class days for students have been scheduled, to enable staff to complete marking, collate marks, prepare reports and awards. Students who have not completed all exams will do s o on these days. Supervision will be available at the College for any student whose parent is not able to supervise them at home during the non-class days.

Research confirms the importance of feedback from teachers for effective student learning. Students will return to school from Monday, 15 th December until Thursday, 18 th December to review exam papers, receive reports and attend academic award ceremonies. These days are compulsory for all students.

These applications are now available from the College office. When the application has been completed at home by students and parents it should be returned to the pigeon hole marked submit Absence from Task application in the office. The application will then be processed and an email confirming approval details will be sent to families.

A Wonderful Opportunity for our Students

Last Wednesday a number of staff from the College were fortunate to visit some of our students at Port Macquarie TAFE. They have been participating in either a Food and Beverage course or a Health and Beauty course one day a week for the past semester. The children prepared a lovely lunch for their guests, made coffees, frappes and milkshakes and waited our tables. We all felt very special and privileged to be in the company of such wonderful young people. I would like to thank Wendy McKinlay and the Port Macquarie TAFE for offering this wonderful opportunity to our students. On Wednesday, week 7 a team of 11 students from SJRC travelled to Byron Bay to compete in the diocesan SLS carnival. All students showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Some notable achievements on the day go to Callum Frewin who placed 2nd in the sprint and 4th in the flags. Congratulation to Dylan Marchingo who placed 1st in the sprint relay, 3rd in the board and 3rd in the flags. Well done Isaac Sanderson and Hugh Stewart who placed 2nd in the board relay.

It was a great day, all team members went in as many events as they could, making up extra relay teams and earning points for our school. Port placed second overall for the day and our students played their part in this exceptional result, well done team! Ryley Batt Award This award recognises students who have displayed determination, enthusiasm and the will to overcome

adversity to achieve their sporting goals.

The winner of this year’s award has had an outstanding year of sport – particularly in swimming. They

competed at our school swimming carnival picking up the age championship trophy, went on to compete at

the Lismore Diocesan Carnival in Lismore they received five first placings and one fifth. At the NSWCCC

Swimming carnival they placed no worse than 3rd

in the five events entered, picking up a gold in their pet

event the 50m breaststroke. They went on to compete at the NSW All Schools Swimming where she received

two gold medals in the 50m breastroke and 50m freestyle. The ultimate for this AWD athlete was to compete

for the NSW All Schools Team at the School Sport Australia Swimming Carnival held in Melbourne where she

placed 3rd

in the 4x50m Medley Relay, 2nd

in the 4x50m freestyle relay and 1st

in the 50m breastroke.

Sports Person of the Year Sports person of the year is worked out on a points scale. Each level of representation or achievement is worth more points in the tally – points are only awarded for school pathway sports. The student with the highest tally in each division is declared sports person of the year.

Junior Sports person of the year for Year 7 & 8 Stu dents This person represented the college in 9 different teams - swimming, rugby league 9s & full side, cross country, soccer, AFL, athletics and touch football. They were the age champion in the school athletics carnival and runner up in cross country. This person also represented the Diocese in athletics at Homebush in Sydney. What an amazing year. On 75 points - Congratulations to year 7 student - Ethan Eames . Intermediate Sports Person of the year for year 9 & 10 Students This person had an outstanding year. They began well, picking up the age champion trophy at our annual swimming carnival. They went on to represent the school at Diocesan level in swimming as well as athletics and surf lifesaving. This person really excelled though in falling gracefully – into water that is. They qualified for the Diocesan Diving Squad where they placed 2nd at the NSWCCC Diving Carnival. The silver medal here, qualified them to represent the NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Carnival where they placed 5th On 90 points – congratulations to Eric Hammer
