ST. JOE’S ENTERS THE 2002-2003 SEASON WITH DUAL GOALS: THE FIRST BEING TO DEFEND ITS HUDSON VALLEY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE SECOND BEING TO MAKE A SERIOUS RUN AT A UNITED STATES COLLEGIATE ASSOCIATION NATIONAL TITLE. WITH EVERY MEMBER OF LAST SEASON’S SQUAD BACK AND BOLSTERED BY THE ADDITION OF 5 STANDOUT RECRUITS, THE LADY BEARS WILL LOOK TO ACCOMPLISH EVEN GREATER GOALS DURING THE CURRENT CAMPAIGN.

ST. JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL‘02 - ‘03 SEASON PREVIEW

LED BY BARRY, LADY BEARS SET GOALS ON DEFENSE OF CONFERENCE CROWN, WITH AN EYE ON A NATIONAL TITLE.

LED BY SIXTH YEAR COACH FRANK P. CARBONE, THE ST. JOE’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM HAS BEEN ON A STEADY RISE IN RECENT YEARS, WITH THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SCHOOL’S FIRST-EVER CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SERVING AS THE HIGHLIGHT FROM THE 2001-2002 CAMPAIGN. “WE REALLY BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE ALL OF THE PIECES NOW IN PLACE TO NOT ONLY DEFEND OUR CONFERENCE TITLE, BUT MAKE A STRONG BID FOR A RUN AT THE NATIONAL TITLE,” SAID CARBONE. “WE HAD A TASTE OF SUCCESS LAST SEASON, AND THE COMBINATION OF SOLID VETERANS AND IMPACT FRESHMEN SHOULD MAKE US EVEN HUNGRIER TO WANT MORE. IF WE CAN CORRECT A FEW THINGS ALONG THE WAY AND STAY FOCUSED, WE HAVE A CHANCE TO CONTINUE OUR RISE AS ONE OF THE TOP DIVISION 3 PROGRAMS IN THE METROPOLIATION AREA.

CARBONE WILL LOOK TO USCAA ALL-AMERICAN MARY BARRY TO AGAIN LEAD THE LADY BEARS THIS SEASON, AFTER POSTING CAREER HIGH (AND TEAM BEST) TOTALS IN POINTS, AVERAGING 22.9 PER GAME, ALONG WITH TEAM HIGHS IN ASSISTS AND STEALS AS A JUNIOR. “MARY IS OUR LEADER ON THE COURT,” CARBONE SAID. “SHE HAS MEANT MORE TO THIS PROGRAM IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS THAN I COULD EVER EXPLAIN. SHE DOES EVERYTHING FOR US - SCORING, REBOUNDING, PASSING, AND DEFENDING. MARY IS EASILY ONE OF THE MOST DOMINANT PLAYERS AT OUR LEVEL AND SHE IS EASILY THE MOST UNSELFISH GREAT PLAYER THAT I HAVE EVER COACHED. SHE ELEVATES EVERYONE’S GAME WHEN SHE’S AT HER BEST.

ENTERING THIS SEASON, BARRY STANDS 516 POINTS AWAY FROM THE RARIFIED AIR OF THE 2,000 POINT CLUB. SHE IS CURRENTLY THE 2ND LEADING SCORER IN ST. JOE’S BASKETBALL HISTORY.

Senior Guard Mary Barry

BARRY WILL BE JOINED IN THE BACKCOURT BY JUNIORS NICOLE CIORCIARI, DONNA GRAFF AND ELA NOWAKOWSKI. IN ADDITION, NEWCOMERS MICHELLE SOFTY, KIM TUTHILL AND NICOLE CARUSO BRING MUCH NEEDED DEPTH AND SOME GREAT TALENT OF THE OWN TO AN ALREADY EXPERIENCED CREW. CIORCIARI BRINGS A DEADLY THREE-POINT SHOT TO THE TABLE, COMPLEMENTED BY THE STEADY MID-RANGE GAME OF GRAFF AND THE DEFENSIVE-MINDED NOWAKOWSKI. SOFTY AND TUTHILL, OUT OF POWERHOUSE CHRIST THE KING H.S. IN QUEENS, BRING CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE, ALONG WITH A DUAL PERIMETER / SLASHING

STYLE OF PLAY TO THE TEAM. CARUSO, THE MVP DURING HER SENIOR SEASON AT MARTIN LUTHER H.S., BRINGS YET ANOTHER ADDITIONAL POTENTIAL OFFENSIVE THREAT, GIVING ST. JOE’S PLENTY OF SCORING OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM.

WHILE THE LADY BEARS HAVE A DEEP ROTATION OF GUARDS THAT THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO RELY ON, THE VERSATILITY OF THE FRONTCOURT FINALLY GIVES ST. JOSEPH’S THE COMPLETE PACKAGE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. ALTHOUGH STILL LACKING A HUGE PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE, ST. JOE’S CAN NOW COMPENSATE FOR THAT LACK OF SIZE WITH A PLETHORA OF WELL-ROUNDED DIVERSE FORWARDS.

LED BY SENIOR KIM MCCORKELL, WHO ALTHOUGH LISTED AT 5’5” BRINGS THE INTENSITY AND HEART OF A 6’5” PLAYER TO THE COURT EVERY TIME OUT, PULLED DOWN A TEAM BEST 280 REBOUNDS (9.3 PER GAME AVERAGE) AND OFTEN SETS THE TEMPO OF THE GAME WITH HER CONSTANT BATTLING AND HUSTLING. “KIM IS AN AMAZING PLAYER TO WATCH,” SAID CARBONE. “IT SEEMS AS IF EVERY GAME I ASK HER TO GUARD SOMEONE 5 OR 6 INCHES TALLER THAN HER, BUT WHEN I LOOK AT THE FINAL NUMBERS, SHE ALWAYS SEEMS TO PULL DOWN 5 OR 6 MORE BOARDS THAN HER COUNTERPART. IT A TRUE JOY TO WATCH HER BATTLE OUT THERE - NO CHALLENGE IS TOO STEEP FOR HER TO OVERCOME.”

MCCORKELL’S GRIT IS BALANCED BY THE SMOOTH GAME OF JUNIOR ZOË ROBBINS, WHO WAS 2ND ON THE TEAM IN SCORING LAST YEAR, WITH 12.4 POINTS PER GAME. ROBBINS, WHO WAS NAMED ALONG WITH BARRY TO THE HUDSON VALLEY ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM, COMBINES A QUICK FIRST STEP TO THE HOOP WITH A STRONG

MID-RANGE JUMPER, WHICH USUALLY CREATES MANY MATCHUP PROBLEMS FOR THE OTHER TEAM. COMING OFF THE BENCH IS SOPHOMORE CHANTELLE MCCURTY, WHO AT 5’ 11” IS THE TALLEST LADY BEAR. MCCURTY, A TRANSFER FROM KEUKA COLLEGE, JOINED THE TEAM LATE LAST SEASON AND PROVIDED ST. JOE’S WITH SOME MUCH NEEDED DEPTH AT THE FORWARD POSITION AND ADDED A LEGITIMATE SHOT-BLOCKING THREAT TO THE VERTICALLY CHALLENGED ROSTER.

THE ADDITION OF FRESHMEN LAUREN ZECCA (THE PEDDIE SCHOOL) AND ANN-MARIE MOLINA (MARY LOUIS) WILL CERTAINLY BOLSTER THE FRONT LINE AS ZECCA BRINGS A GUARD’S MENTALITY AND SKILL TO THE HIGH POST WHILE MOLINA PROVIDES MUCH NEEDED SIZE AND STRENGTH TO THE LOW BLOCKS.

WHILE THE LADY BEARS APPEAR TO HAVE ALL OF THE PARTS IN PLACE FOR ANOTHER TITLE RUN, THERE ARE MANY POTENTIAL PITFALLS THAT LIE ALONG THE ROAD - WITH THE MOST OBVIOUS BEING THE STRENGTH OF THE ST. JOE’S OPPOSITION. NOT CONTENT TO CRUISE THROUGH THE REGULAR SEASON, CARBONE WENT OUT AND BEEFED UP AN ALREADY DEMANDING SHEDULE WHICH FEATURES CUNY HEAVYWEIGHTS STATEN ISLAND, HUNTER AND CCNY ON THE ROAD AND A VISIT FROM THE 2001-2002 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, THE APPRENTICE SCHOOL IN EARLY FEBRUARY. COMMENTING ON THE BRUTAL SCHEDULE, CARBONE ADDED, “OUR GOAL AND BELIEF IS THAT IF WE ARE TO BE A SERIOUS CONTENDER IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIOSHIP PICTURE, WE MUST CHALLENGE OURSELVES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR BY PLAYING WHO WE FEEL ARE THE BEST TEAMS

‘02 - ‘03 SEASON PREVIEWST. JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

- continued from previous page

Senior Forward Kim McCorkellOUT THERE.” “WE MUST BE ABLE TO PROVE THAT WE CAN MATCH-UP AGAINST THE BEST IF WE TRULY WANT TO BE THE BEST.”

AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR’S SCHEDULE IS CERTAINLY THE SURF N’ SLAM TOURNAMENT, WHICH WILL BE HELD DURING CHRISTMAS IN SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA. THE LADY BEARS ARE GUARANTEED THREE GAMES IN THIS ROUND ROBIN TOURNEY AGAINST SOME OF THE BEST DIVISION III COMPETITION IN THE COUNTRY. “WE ARE INCREDIBLY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO TRAVEL AND COMPETE IN THIS TYPE OF NATIONAL SETTING”, SAID CARBONE. “THE COLLEGE’S ADMINISTRATION HAS BEEN EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE OF ALL OF OUR EFFORTS AS A TEAM AND WE APPRECIATE THEIR FAITH IN OUR ABILITY TO REPRESENT THE COLLEGE TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY. OUR APPEARANCE ON THE NATIONAL STAGE IN THE PAST 2 YEARS HAS BEEN VERY WELL-RECEIVED AND FURTHER SOLIDIFIES THE COLLEGE’S WILLINGNESS TO PROVIDE US WITH OPPORTUNITIES THAT WOULDN’T NORMALLY EXIST FOR A SCHOOL OUR SIZE. WHILE WE MAY NOT COME AWAY WITH 3 WINS, WE WILL CERTAINLY CONTINUE OUR QUEST TO PUT

Head Coach Frank P. Carbone

“ST. JOE’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ON THE MAP”.

WHILE EXPECTATIONS ARE UNDERSTANDBLY HIGH, CARBONE IS KEENLY AWARE AND CAUTIOUS THAT THERE ARE MANY OBSTACLES TO SURPASS IF THE LADY BEARS WANT TO ACHIEVE THEIR LOFTY GOALS FOR THE 2002-2003 SEASON. CARBONE ADDS, “WHILE WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE AN EXTREMELY TALENTED GROUP OF YOUNG WOMEN ON THIS YEAR’S TEAM, WE MUST REALIZE THAT WE HAVE TO WORK EVEN HARDER TO CONTINUE STRIVING FOR THE NEXT LEVEL OF SUCCESS.” WE HAVE TO BE TOTALLY COMMITTED AS A UNIT TO THE ULTIMATE GOAL IF WE ARE TO ACHIEVE OUR MISSION - THIS CAN BE ATTAINED BY SIMPLY PRACTICNG HARDER, FOCUSING MORE INTENTLY ON THE TASK AT HAND, OR EVEN BEING WILLING TO SACRIFICE ONE’S ROLES AND MINUTES BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE TEAM. IN FACT, THIS WILL BE THE TRUE TEST AND CHALLENGE FOR THE LADY BEARS THIS YEAR. HOWEVER, I AM SUPREMELY PROUD AND CONFIDENT OF MY PLAYERS AND BELIEVE THAT WE WILL INDEED HAVE A PHENOMENAL SEASON!”

FRANK P. CARBONEHead Coach

In just 5 years, Frank Carbone has raised the level of expectations for the Women’s Basketball program at St. Joseph’s College to tremendous heights. Back in 1997 when he took the helm of a Lady Bears ship that was barely afl oat, Carbone has worked long and hard to shore up the hull and guide the development of St. Joe’s along a steady and sure course to success. Along the way, not only has the women’s basketball program gained a new found level of respect and admiration, but it has done so in record-setting measures.

COACHING STAFF ST. JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Coming off its fi rst ever Hudson Valley Conference championship in 2001-2002, no season in recent memory has stirred such a feeling of optimism for the Lady Bears, who look to not only defend their title in ’02-’03 but to eclipse the 20 win mark for the fi rst time in the school’s history. Much of the reason for this feeling is the ambition, drive and vision of Coach Carbone – who has assembled a talented and deep roster while imbedding his values of dedication, trust and loyalty among his battle-tested crew.

Included in Coach Carbone’s accomplishments are leading the Lady Bears to two consecutive 19 win seasons (both school records), capping off a perfect 2001-2002 Hudson Valley Conference campaign with a league title, and advancing to the post-season and an appearance in the quarterfi nals of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s for the past two seasons (including reaching the Final Four in 2000-2001).

Under Coach Carbone’s guidance, players like Mary Barry and Zoë Robbins have made dramatic improvements in their games and have blossomed into National All-American and Hudson Valley All-Conference selections.

MARY BARRY:He’s bold ! He’s not only a coach, but a friend and he knows what buttons to push to make you play “your” game.

KIM MCCORKELL:He inspires me to be a better player, person, and leader both on and off the court.

ZOË ROBBINS:He always believes in you – when your confi dence is low, he always gives you a boost !

CHANTELLE MCCURTY:He is very encouraging, honest, fun and always there to help you.

THE LADY BEARS ON FRANK:

Above and beyond all else, Carbone truly cares about his team as people fi rst and players second. Building confi dence and establishing a fi rm bond through trust and loyalty form the basis of his coaching philosophy.

Coming off a stellar 2000-2001 campaign in which the Lady Bears set a school record with 19 wins, the women’s basketball team was hopeful that their winning ways would continue into this season. St. Joe’s certainly lived up to those expectations by not only reeling off 15 straight victories, but winning their conference championship to merit an at-large bid to the U.S.C.A.A. national tournament, fi nishing the season with a 19 – 11 overall record. The drive for a potential national championship ended in the quarterfi nal round vs. the eventual National Champions, The Apprentice School, who dashed the Lady Bears title hopes in convincing fashion.

After starting the season winning just four of their fi rst thirteen games, St. Joe’s turned it around in truly dramatic fashion and achieved some major milestones along the way, including an undefeated regular season conference record (7 – 0) and fi rst place fi nish in the very competitive Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (H.V.W.A.C.). The Lady Bears rolled on from there by toppling Yeshiva University and SUNY-Old Westbury to win

the H.V.W.A.C. tournament championship – all fi rst-time

achievements for the St. Joe’s Women’s Basketball Program. While the Lady Bears program has improved markedly over the course of Coach Frank P. Carbone’s fi ve-year tenure, one would have been hard pressed to think that the team would not only match but also be in a position to surpass the level of success that it experienced in its breakthrough season last year. The current squad, which will return every player next season, has worked very hard to produce another impressive season and although a decided underdog as the #9 seed in the national tournament, the Lady Bears clearly have their sights set on bringing a championship to Brooklyn.

The young but experienced Lady Bears, drew a diffi cult opening round assignment as they matched up against the tournament hosts, Central Maine Technical College (#8 seed) in the opening round of action. Boasting an impressive 15 – 1 record heading into the contest and having a decided home court advantge, CMTC was shocked in the opening round as St. Joe’s rose to the challenge behind Nicole Ciorciari’s 20 points to upset the Lady Mustangs.

‘01 - ‘02 SEASON RECAPST. JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ST. JOE’S MARY BARRY AMONG MANY KEYS TO SUCCESS

While the entire roster made signifi cant contributions to the team’s success this season, there is little doubt that without the sensational efforts of co-captain Mary Barry, many of the game outcomes would not have gone in the “W” column for the Lady Bears. Barry, a junior guard from The Mary Louis Academy in Queens, led the team in scoring with a 23.3 per game average (up from 14.3 from just one year ago). Barry’s scoring acumen is just a small part of her versatile all-around game, as she paced the team in a number of other key categories, including 3 point goals (75), assists (3.5 apg), steals (3.5 spg), and total minutes played. Her stellar play was recognized as she was named as a fi rst team all-conference selection in the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (H.V.W.A.C.) and captured the Most Valuable Player Award in leading St. Joe’s to their fi rst-ever conference tournament championship. Mary also received national accolades on three different occasions this season as the U.S.C.A.A.’s Player of the Week (December 2nd, December 9Th, and February 10th). Earlier this season, Mary recorded another signifi cant milestone by tallying her 1,000th

career point (December 8th vs. the College of Staten Island). Based on her outstanding play this season, Mary is in position to be selected as a National All-American, which would mark the fi rst time in the school’s history that an honor of this magnitude was bestowed on a Lady Bear.

Not to be overlooked is a strong supporting cast, led by sophomore forward Zoë Robbins, who turned in another fi ne season, meriting a spot on the H.V.W.A.C. All-Conference second team. Robbins, from Francis Lewis High School in Queens, is in the top three on the team in a number of key statistical areas, including scoring (12.2 ppg), rebounding (8.2 rpg), assists (2.6 apg) and blocked shots (36 total). Key roles are also played by co-captain Kim McCorkell (St. Savior’s in Brooklyn), who leads the team in rebounding with 9.6 boards per game; Donna Graff (Christ The King, Queens), who is the third leading scorer (8.6 ppg), and sharpshooter Nicole Ciorciari (St. John’s Prep, Queens), who despite missing nearly half the season with a fractured wrist, came back with a fl ourish, setting a career-high with 26 points in a win vs. York College on February 12th.

In fact, a number of the Lady Bears players have enjoyed fi ne individual seasons and have consistently placed in the top 20 on the national leader board in a number of key statistical areas. Here are some of the St. Joe’s standouts:

MARY BARRY – POINTS (3RD – 23.3), REBOUNDS (13TH – 8.2), ASSISTS (8TH – 3.7), STEALS (5TH – 3.7)ZOË ROBBINS – REBOUNDS (14TH – 8.2), ASSISTS (20TH – 2.6)KIM MCCORKELL – REBOUNDS (6TH – 9.6)DONNA GRAFF – REBOUNDS (20TH – 7.9)
