Lent Begins on Wednesday: Mass at 9 am & 6 pm at St. Joseph’s. Prayer Service at Noon at St. Paul’s

Lent, the season of spiritual preparation for the high holy days of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

The tried-and-true way of observing a “good Lent” is threefold: prayer, fasting and giving. 1. Prayer: Lenten Adult Faith Formation Program see details on page 2. Morning Prayer: Wednesday mornings at St. Joseph's following Mass Rosary Evenings: Sundays at 7PM at St. Paul’s. Open to any and all who would like to pray the rosary in a group setting. If you would like to learn how to pray the rosary, leaders arrive a few minutes early to offer guidance and to give an introduction to the rosary to help to make you more comfortable with the prayers. Stations of the Cross: every Friday at 5:00 pm. Alternating between St. Joseph’s on Feb. 19, Mar. 5 & 19 Apr. 2 and St. Paul’s on Feb. 26, Mar. 12 & 26 The Word Among Us and The Little Black Book: (one per family) are located near the church entrances for you to pick up and use through the Lenten season.

2. Fast & Abstinence: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. As a sign of our penance, we preserve for the Diocese of Albany the custom of abstinence from meat on the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence binds all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Fast binds all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Fasting refers to the quantity of food eaten. Traditionally, fasting calls for only one full meal per day.

3. Giving Rice Bowls: (one per family) This Lent our parish is again participating in Catholic Relief Service’s Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that helps families experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world. Here are three simple ways to bring Lent to life in your home: * Place your CRS Rice Bowl in a prominent place in your home and use it to collect your Lenten sacrifices. * Read the Lenten calendar reflections each day as a family.

Lenten Adult Faith Formation Program - Discover the Beauty and Riches of the Mass This Lent our parish will be participating in a great Program from Ascension Press. This will be a virtual Program that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home!

This five-part program takes participants on an exciting tour of the Liturgy as it explores the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. See, perhaps for the first time, why we say what we say and do what we do every week at Mass. You will see the words and gestures in a new light, giving new life to the liturgical experience.

Each participant will receive their own book and study guide and have access to the weekly videos (for one full year after purchase). This will allow participants to view the videos, as their personal time permits, in the comfort of their own homes. Then each week during lent we will gather virtually (via Zoom) to review the workbook questions, discuss what we’ve learned and share our thoughts (if you’d like - no pressure). What a better way to prepare for Easter than spending time getting closer to the Mass.

The link below provides more details and information about this Program. To participate, just go to the link and purchase the Study Set ($19.95), then register for our parish sessions. If you could, please also send us an email confirming your registration.

Everyday Stewardship The Unfailing Goodness of God I have always wondered why Jesus told the cleansed leper not to publicize how he had been healed by the Son of God. It’s not that I can’t understand why Jesus would want to keep the matter quiet — after all, he knew that as soon as people heard, he would be mobbed with requests for healings, and his movements restricted. What gets me is the fact that Jesus simply must have realized the leper would not listen to him. Why give someone a command you know they will ignore? It’s a complicated question, and when I reflect on it, I can’t help but connect it to another equally complicated question: why does God, all-good and all-knowing, allow bad things to happen? Yes, God is all-good and all-knowing. So when He gives us free will, He knows what we will do with it. However, He is also all-powerful. He can and will bring good from any situation, any tragedy, or even any instance where someone ignores Him. Was it a sin for this leper to do other than what Jesus had said? That’s a heavy question for a Sunday morning! But it’s plain to see that, even though this man ignored Jesus’ command, God still used his actions. How many were brought to Christ because of the news spread by this leper! As someone trying to live out a stewardship way of life, what is God requesting of you right now?

Next weekend’s second collection will be for Black, Native American and Latin American Missions

We ask your continued support for the Black, Native American & Latin American Missions Special Collection. Funds from this combined collection support projects and help to fund catechesis and evangelization programs throughout the United States and the Church of Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, seminarian training and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. The Black and Native American Mission Office provides grants for projects that promote Native American and Black evangelization efforts throughout North America including programs in the Diocese of Albany. By contributing to next week’s collection, you will provide seeds to grow the faith for years to come.

Reading I Lv 13:1-2, 44-46 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “If someone has on his skin a scab or pustule or blotch which appears to be the sore of leprosy, he shall be brought to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests among his descendants. If the man is leprous and unclean, the priest shall declare him unclean by reason of the sore on his head. “The one who bears the sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare, and shall muffle his beard; he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall declare himself unclean, since he is in fact unclean. He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” Responsorial Psalm Ps 32:1-2, 5, 11 R. (7) I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. Blessed is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile. R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. Then I acknowledged my sin to you, my guilt I covered not. I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,” and you took away the guilt of my sin. R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart. R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. Reading II 1 Cor 10:31—11:1 Brothers and sisters, Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved. Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Alleluia Lk 7:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia. A great prophet has arisen in our midst, God has visited his people. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mk 1:40-45 A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. Prayer of Saint Thomas Aquinas

I give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,

who have been pleased to nourish me, a sinner and your unworthy servant,

with the precious Body and Blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: this through no merits of mine,

but due solely to the graciousness of your mercy.

And I pray that this Holy Communion may not be for me an offense to be punished,

but a saving plea for forgiveness. May it be for me the armor of faith, and the shield of good will.

May it cancel my faults, destroy concupiscence and carnal passion,

increase charity and patience, humility and obedience and all the virtues,

may it be a firm defense against the snares of all my enemies,

both visible and invisible, the complete calming of my impulses, both of the flesh and of the spirit,

a firm adherence to you, the one tru God, and the joyful completion of my life’s course.

And I beseech you to lead me, a sinner,

to that banquet beyond all telling, where with your Son and the Holy Spirit you are the rue light of your Saints,

fullness of satisfied desire, eternal gladness, consummate delight and perfect happiness.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen
