A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners,

This weekend is Stewardship Awareness Weekend. The theme is “It is truly right and just. . . always and everywhere

to give you thanks.” Because we are disciples of Jesus Christ, we are also called to be good stewards of all that has been entrusted to us. I think we all agree that God has bestowed many blessings upon us personally and as a parish family. So, today we reflect on the ways we can and do return a portion of our blessings to God, sharing them with our parish family and the universal Church. I want to thank those parishioners who faithfully and generously give their time, talents and treasures that are necessary to support St. Joseph Parish and our many ministries. A personal letter from me to each registered household has been mailed to you. I ask that you prayerfully reflect on it as you make your pledge to St. Joseph Parish.

Please remember that for the past six years, our parish has been tithing 5% of its Sunday collections to charities outside of our parish. Approximately, $150,000 will be given to over 40 charitable groups which many of you recommended to our Tithing Outreach Committee.

Also, in your packets of envelopes, there is a special envelope for the Formation of Permanent Deacons for the

weekend of September 30th-October 1st. Our permanent deacons contribute quite a lot to our parishes and I encourage

you to support this important collection.

God Bless, Msgr. Callahan

Only then did He begin to teach them.” - St. Teresa of Calcutta If you have a prayer request or would like to join our Ministry, please contact, Joyce Kluge at 314-324-7490 or email Jane Trende at [email protected]

12 FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT “Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, & a rotten tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down & thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them.” (Matthew 7:17-20)

In September, we are focusing on the fruit of Gentleness.

Gentleness is a practice that involves having a calm temperament; we act calmly & stay away from actions that might lead us, or others to a place of anger or resentment.

It’s our great duty & responsibility to share Christ’s gentleness with the world. We have a duty as young people in our rough world to be the one who extends a hand to those who need it. It is our job to remain calm when our first reaction is to get upset, & to remain kind when everything inside us wants to be unkind. We are called to be gentle, as Christ has first been gentle with us.

Here are some practical ways you can exhibit gentleness in your life Take some time to think about actions that might

lead others to anger or resentment. Develop a plan to recognize & avoid these actions.

ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUIS OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

September 14, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday, October 1, 2017, there will be a special collection for the formation of permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of

St. Louis. This collection relieves some of their financial burden for studies to become a deacon. Since 1977, 440 men have

been ordained as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese. There are 181 active deacons ordained for the Archdiocese and 83

retired deacons. There are 70 men in formation at this time.

When the permanent diaconate program was initiated in the Archdiocese in January 1977, men went through a two-year

formation program, with a third year of post-ordination formation. Since then, the program has gradually expanded to five

years of formation, plus three more years of post-ordination formation.

Deacons serve in parishes, hospitals, archdiocesan agencies, and other organizations. Half of the active deacons continue to

work full-time jobs, requiring them to balance family lives and professions with their ministry as a deacon.

During formation and after ordination, deacons offer their time, personal gifts and material goods to build up the Church in the

Archdiocese without compensation. Their service extends into many areas of parish life, as they assist all of us in carrying out

the mission of the Church.

Please support the formation of permanent deacons by promoting the special collection for the Formation of Permanent

Deacons on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson

Archbishop of St. Louis

40 DAYS FOR LIFE “IT MATTERS”! Here is part of a text received by a 40 Days for Life participant in CA:

“I wanted to send you guys a text to let you know that what you do out there does make a difference. When I went to that abortion clinic last week to drop off my money to terminate my pregnancy, I saw people standing out there with signs. I didn’t expect to see that & part of me felt ashamed. I drove through the gates anyway & went inside, gave them my money & made an appointment for 2:30pm today… All this week I thought & prayed about it & I realized in my heart what the right thing to do was. I can’t help but think that had you guys not been there that day to remind me that I had another choice, that maybe one more baby would have died today. Don’t stop what you’re doing. It matters. It did to me. From the blonde lady in the white SUV who picked up her money instead of aborting her baby today.”

Your prayers can truly make a difference in the lives of complete strangers.

Please join us to pray for 1 hour, 7:00 A.M-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, Sept. 27th or Sunday, Oct. 8th, during the 40 Days for Life prayer campaign

SEPTEMBER - Virtue of the Month - Faith

Saints of the Month - St. Martha, St. Jerome, St. Augustine

Saint Augustine (354-430, North Africa) Feast: August 28

After Saint Paul, perhaps one of the most compelling stories of conversion to faith in Christ must be that of Saint Augustine. Born of a pagan father, who became a Christian only on his deathbed, and of Saint Monica, who was born and raised in the Christian faith, Saint Augustine was blessed with great intelligence and burdened with an unruly heart.

Although raised in the faith of his mother, Saint Augustine was not baptized and drifted away from belief in God to follow the world. By the time he was 15, he was living with a woman outside of marriage, with whom he later had a son. Saint Augustine's keen mind led him to the famous academic centers of the pagan Roman Empire, where he taught with great success. Unsettled in his understanding of the meaning of life, Saint Augustine followed the philosophy of the Manichaeans for a time, which saw the world as a great struggle between good and evil and life in the body as something to be scorned.

The turning point in the saint's life finally came when, inspired by the mysterious words of a child to "take and read," Saint Augustine opened up the Bible and his heart was opened to God. Baptized by Saint Ambrose, bishop of Milan, Italy, Saint Augustine eventually returned to Africa, sold his property, and founded a monastery.

Made Bishop of Hippo (North Africa) by popular acclaim, Saint Augustine fought against the heresies of the day-including Manichaeism-and became one of the most prolific writers on the Christian faith the world has ever known. Perhaps the most quoted of his sayings is the one that best describes the profound faith of Saint Augustine: "Our hearts were made for You, 0 Lord, and they are restless until they rest in You."
