Welcome to the communities of St. Joseph/St. Jude!

The arrival of a new priest is always an occasion to celebrate the uniqueness of God’s anointed one. We were well instructed and pastored by Msgr Alexander and now we look forward to continued guidance from our new parish priest, Fr. Hasley King.

Fr. Hasley, During the next few months, you will get to know more about the different initiatives within our parish ministries. These are of course not the only things that are important here to us— you will also get to know the warm and friendly parishioners along the way. We will definitely give you the time and space that you need to observe us and strategize about how best to shepherd us. We are happy to have you Father!

Fr. Hasley grew up in Dades Road, Rio Claro, the parish of St. Theresa. It was there he first met the Carmelites. Fr. John Horan, O. Carm. assisted him in his vocation to the Carmelites. In August 1999 he joined the Carmelites and was later ordained to the priesthood on 19th July, 2008. He has worked in Manzanilla (St. Paul/St. Jude), Maracas Valley (st. Michael, New Grant (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), Rio Claro (St. Theresa) and Mission Toco Matelot.

A brief history of the Carmelites: Origin

The Order of Carmelites has its origins on

Mount Carmel, in Palestine, where, as we

read in the II Book of Kings, the great

prophet Elijah defended the true faith in

the God of Israel, when he won the

challenge against the priests of Baal. It

was also on Mount Carmel that the same

prophet, praying in solitude, saw the small

cloud which brought life-giving rain after

the long drought. From time immemorial,

this mountain has been considered the

lush garden of Palestine and symbol of

fertility and beauty. Indeed, "Karmel"

means "garden".

On that mountain the first Carmelites came

together, a unique group. Laymen, most of

them, living as hermits in community. They

took as their model one who appealed to

many monks in the West, the Prophet

Elijah. And with the passage of time they

took Mary as the companion on their

journey to the Lord.

The motto of the Carmelite Order is: “Zelo zelatus

sum pro Domino Deo exercituum.” This powerful

expression is a direct quote of the words of Elijah

from the First Book of Kings, 19:10: “With zeal

have I been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts.”
