PASTOR’S CORNER Our Sunday readings encourage us to live on in the love of Christ and be filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. As we observe Mother’s Day, we don’t have to look very far to the one who taught us to love and to be filled with a joyful spirit. Our mothers, who gave us our natural life, often were our first teachers in the ways of prayer, respect and service to others. They were patient when we were stubborn; they were persistent when we were lazy; they comforted us in our moments of sorrow. How could we ever repay them for the daily and spiritual gifts they bestowed on us? Well, today we can make an attempt to express a well deserved “thank you” to our mom. We also keep in mind, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. At the 11:15 Mass we will have our May crowning, with the First Communion class doing the honors. So, take some time today to pray for your mother, whether you still have her with you or she has gone to her eternal rest. May all have a blessed and joyous day, especially our mothers!

Fr. Mike Garvey

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon to repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and rue the day!” Memories of old pagan parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of the white wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to do with Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans!

APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE

Next weekend, May 16/17, the Appalachian Experience group will hold a bake sale to raise funds for their trip to Clintwood, Va in June 13-20 to participate in the St. Joseph’s Housing Repair

Program. All bakers may drop off their baked goods in the Narthex before the Mass they attend. Thank you!

DID YOU KNOW? It costs $275.00 per person for the fee to pay for lodging, materials, and related expenses. Plus, gas and food expenses are needed for the group. We currently have 13 people planning on participating in this year’s outreach effort. If you or your business would like to sponsor one of our volunteers, please contact our coordinators, Dan & Sean Fejes (330-274-2481). If you need more information, pick up a flyer from the Narthex, and/or check out our website under Ministries & Organizations.

MASS MINISTRY TRAINING OFFERED IN MAY “How To Be a Lector or Eucharistic Minister” class will be offered during May. St. Joseph’s needs new ministers to replace parishioners no longer able to serve and to have available substitutes when needed. Parish ministry is part of our baptismal call to active discipleship, a great way to meet other parishioners , and a way to give back to God in loving service. To make training more accessible, we can schedule group or individual instruction times - day or evening, weekday or weekend. Won’t you please consider training as a Lector or Eucharistic Minister and arrange a time with Mrs. Peg Haney and/or Sr. Joyce (330-274-2253).
