PASTOR’S CORNER Earlier today I was reading some of Pope Francis’ homily on “Peace and Justice”, New Years Day. The Holy Father exhorts us to build interpersonal relations marked by respect, justice and love. He goes on to note the negative reality of sin. This can cause others and us to treat people as objects or things rather than sons or daughters of God with the dignity that comes from that. I would like to suggest that those attitudes begin here in our homes and in our parish. We need to build an atmosphere of trust and caring for all in our community. This week we observe Martin Luther King Day and the Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade. Our lives of faith, like Frost Road, have many turns and ups and downs. In the New Year, let the Star of Bethlehem lead us to “trust in Jesus” and to care for our brothers and sisters with compassion and understanding. God bless you all this week.

Fr. Mike Garvey

Are we stewards of the great gift given to us in the Eucharist?

SYMPATHY We extend our sympathy to the families and friends of Bob Fejes, husband of Kathy, and of Santo Scopilliti, father of Deacon Gerry, who recently passed away. May these families find comfort and strength as their loved ones live in the eternal presence of God in whom all find comfort and peace.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.” We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul?

GENEROSITY APPRECIATED Thank you to everyone who has so generously supported recent collections held in our parish. From the Giving Tree and Mitten Tree to Keep The Kids Warm and St. Joseph Cares . . . your support is truly a blessing to those in need.

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE St. Blaise (also spelled Blase and Blasius) was a 3rd century physician who became Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia. This was the time of persecution under Licinius, so St. Blaise hid out in a cave on Mt. Argeus. He was captured and imprisoned, and from prison cured a boy who was choking to death on a fish bone. St. Blaise was beaten, had his flesh torn by wool combs, and was beheaded, martyred along with seven

women. Because of the cure of the boy's throat when the boy was choking, St. Blaise is patron against troubles of the throat as well as the patron of veterinarians and against attacks of wild animals. He is represented in art as a Bishop holding two crossed candles, with wool combs, or in a cave surrounded by wild animals. Everyone is invited to attend we pray through the intercession of St. Blaise that God delivers us from throat ailments and from every other evil in memory of St. Blaise after Masses the weekend of January 31/February 1.
