Next Week: 3rd Sunday of Lent 1st Reading: Exodus 3:1-8, 13-15 2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:1-6,10-12 Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

SCRIPTURE FOCUS: The fig tree in the parable in to-day’s Gospel represents Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the center of God’s chosen people. He loved and cared, culti-vated and fertilized. It is time for Jerusalem to bear fruit, but Jerusalem failed. The coming of Jesus as the “sign” of God’s love for people can be seen as an extra time of grace given to Jerusalem. But by the time the Gospel was written, Luke’s audience would know that Jerusalem had been destroyed. The parable also carries a caution for us: Unless we reform we too will perish, just as Jeru-salem did.

LIFE FOCUS: Tell how God’s calling caused you to look

inward and make a positive change in your life.

Most folks are self-conscious about their appearance. This is a good thing when kept within the bounds of self-respect and a healthy care of the body. However, it can be exaggerated to the point of crippling disease. Then, there are those among us

who carry the enormous cross of a visible deformity. One thinks of those marred by accident, war, disease or from birth. In these latter cases folks, after great personal suffering (physical and mental), can come to understand in a very concrete way that beauty is only skin deep for they often discover a deeper more permanent beauty – the beauty of the person beneath. It happens, too, that these, and any who are visibly challenged, can lead us who are not challenged in so visible a way to appreciate the abiding and more important beauty of the soul within; the soul within them and within ourselves. And this introduction brings us straight to the Gospel of today. “Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white…Peter and his compan-ions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory.” (Gospel of the Day; Luke 9) Peter and his companions we are told had fallen asleep but became fully awake. This is metaphorical language intended to communicate how unaware they had been of the glory hidden within the day to day appearance of Jesus; of which glory, they now become fully conscious. But, why hadn’t they seen it before? Certainly Jesus was attracting large numbers on account of his gracious words and his miracles. Certainly Jesus was doing good works, even the works of God, before this moment: raising the dead, forgiving sins, feeding the hungry multitudes in mind and body. Certainly, Jesus showed himself more than a carpenter, philanthropist, and prophet before this transfiguration moment. Why, had not his intimate friends glimpsed his glory thru all the great and extraordinary (even supernatural) events they had already witnessed? Who knows, maybe Jesus was just too plain and ordinary, too poor and humble for them to see the God he was. The point is this – we are like the apostles. We see a Church that is just ordinary but never seem to grasp the glory of the Kingdom of God she is. We see a Church that is always poor, always struggling, filled with sinners, and we never get past the visible to the beauty hidden be-neath. True, we see her feed the poor, clothe the naked, comfort the sick. True we see her have exhilarating moments like millions flocking to see her shepherd in chief the Pope. But, still we are all too ready to dismiss her as just one more flawed organization, doing some good, among the gazillions of other institutions. We see her only as human and never as divine. I guarantee you that if we were to see the glory of the Church we would be as surprised as the apostles when they saw the glory of Jesus. And yet, the glory of the Church is the same as that of Jesus: the divine abiding in total unity with the human. I think this surface faith that so many of us have is what allows us to become enemies of the Faith or as St. Paul said enemies of the Cross: “For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things.” (Second Reading; Philippians 3) We need to take our profession of faith to a deeper level. Let’s do this this Lent. Our First Reading from Genesis is given us today as an example of true faith; of the kind of faith we need to acquire. Abraham is told: The Lord God took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” (Gen-esis 15) By all accounts, by outward appearance, this must have seemed impossible to the child-less Abraham. But we are told: “Abram put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.” A faith that is only skin deep will fade as certainly as the beauty of the body.
