MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

ST LUCY PROJECT FOOD COLLECTION

It’s a new year and new decade, but some things never change- one of them is the ongoing needs of the food challenged in our diocese. The Men of St Joseph - the Men’s Society and the Knights of Colum-bus - will conduct a winter food collection to benefit the St. Lucy Project. Winter months are particularly challenging in meeting the needs of our poor in the diocese, but the generosity of our parishioners is unwavering. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! We will be collecting your offerings of non-perishable food and mon-etary donations before all Masses this weekend, February 8-9. Your exemplary support is very much appreciated.

Parish Advisory Council – Presentation on the BLA

Fr. Tom has asked members of the Parish Advisory Council to speak at Masses this weekend about the Bishop’s Lenten Ap-peal, or the BLA. First, I’d like to thank Fr. Tom for slotting us the week after the impressive presentations from our St. Joseph School students. Talk about a tough act to follow. I also realize that the only thing keeping you from getting your throats blessed – not to mention your Super Bowl party preparations – is this talk. I’ll keep it brief. Three weeks from now, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, we will ask parishioners to make in-pew commitments to the Bish-op’s Lenten Appeal. Our main goal today is to get us all think-ing and praying about that commitment as an important part of our Lenten devotion of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I know it feels like we just finished Christmas, but the Church has also historically celebrated a pre-Lent period as a time when we begin to plan for our personal Lenten journeys. Just as im-portant family celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries re-quire advance planning to be made special, our Lenten journeys require thinking, praying and planning in advance. Our request is that your pre-Lenten contemplation over the next few weeks include the BLA. Following in the footsteps of Jesus and the Apostles, Bishop Burbidge’s mission is to build the Kingdom of God in the Dio-cese of Arlington, building up the Church and providing for the corporal and spiritual works of mercy to those in need through-out the Diocese. As Baptized Catholics, each of us is called to help the Bishop in this mission, and donating to the BLA is the primary way that we do that. The BLA feeds the hungry and shelters the homeless, supports Catholic schools and religious education for children and adults, prenatal care for mothers in need, medical care for the uninsured, and importantly, the re-cruitment, development and formation of new priests and dea-cons, which is key to the continued renewal and reform of the Church. The Bishop relies heavily on continued support from the people of St. Joseph’s. St. Joseph’s consistently exceeds its BLA goal each year, and the average donation level from St. Joseph’s is significantly higher than the Diocese-wide average. So thank you for your past generosity and commitment. We do ask that you consider if you can you afford to give more than last year? And even more important than the level of giving is that every family participate to the extent they are able. So if you have not given in the past, can this be the year to start, even with a small contribution? To help in your pre-Lenten contemplation, every family should have received a mailing from the Diocese, and the bulletin will include important information on the BLA starting next week. Thank you for your time today and for your continued generosi-ty and support for the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal.

CRAFT FAIR COORDINATOR /ASSISTANTS NEEDED SAVE THE DATE! OCTOBER 31, 2020 Volunteers are a vital part of the success of the St. Joseph Annual Craft Fair each fall. We recently celebrated our 15th Year! We thank Jacki Esguerra for her many years of sharing her time and talents in coordinating past craft fairs! The Ladies’ Society sponsors the Craft Fair and we are now looking for a new Coordinator/Assistants to carry on this tradi-tion and important fundraiser! In addition we need people to head subcomittees, i.e., adult & student volunteers, food con-cession, marketing, raffle, solicitation for sponsors, etc. The proceeds from the Craft Fair pay for our Dranesville Backpack Lunch Program, which provides food for 100 chil-dren who would not otherwise have food on the weekends. St. Joseph Ladies Society partners with other parishes to provide this service to the children. We are already in the planning stages for our Craft Fair which is slotted for Oct. 31st, but if we do not get a Coordinator or Coordinators, the Craft Fair will sadly be no more! Mary has already got a request for a registration form and this is the time we send out Registration forms to our returning Vendors. Please prayerfully consider sharing your talents, and call Mary Kirby at (703) 481-6189 as soon as possible or email [email protected] to volunteer. We don’t want to lose this important St. Joseph’s tradition!
