Friends Peace be with you. This is a message from Archbishop Jackels. I have copied it directly from the Archdiocese’s website. Please note, this is meant to be a conversation starter not the end. Also note, this Archbishop would rather be doing anything but having this conversation. An archdiocesan conversation about the vitality and future of our parishes In the movie Amadeus, when Mozart asked Emperor Joseph II what he thought about his newest opera, he said: There are simply too many parishes and churches, I mean, Notes. We’re praying and working hard to promote vocations to the priesthood, but even when we have more priests, we would still have too many parishes and churches. The general population has declined, as has the Catholic population, and the number of priests, but the number of parishes and churches hasn’t declined correspondingly. Buildings serve what defines a parish: serving the poor; learning and teaching the Gospel; prayer and worship. We don’t maintain chapels of convenience, or museums to the past. If all three activities aren’t present, call it what you will, but it’s not a parish, and the parishioners have decided it should be closed (not the old, fat, and bald archbishop). One priest said: We don’t have too few priests, we have too many parishes. Too many for our priests to pastor, and too many of them less than active and vibrant. A parish just can’t attract, retain, or offer spiritual nourishment to people if nothing happens there in between Sundays, and if parishioners don’t share time, talent and Treasure. And so, there’s a need to do pastoral planning, that is, how best to provide pastoral care to Catholics in the 30 counties of the Archdiocese; this effort will be led by Jeff Henderson. The first step: Jeff will develop an instrument to be used to solicit responses from online surveys and at in-person meetings in February 2022. All are welcome to give input. 1229 Mount Loretta Avenue • Dubuque, Iowa 52003-7286 Phone (563) 556-2580 • www.DBQArch.org The second step: Jeff will draw from the survey responses to determine what questions to ask, criteria to use, and standards for measuring the vitality of a parish, and its Future. The third step: Jeff will use those standards to recommend which parishes and churches to close, merge, or leave as is, and in such a way that all will take ownership of the Decision. Pastoral planning doesn’t signal we’ve given up hope; au contraire, it serves to invigorate our efforts to continue the mission of Jesus in the ministries of our parishes and churches. Michael O. Jackels Archbishop of Dubuque

For more information or to register go to iowa-wwme.org or call 563-608-3305.
STO Organization The 75% Tax Credit sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. If you file an Iowa income tax return, your contributions to the Our Faith School Tuition Organization (STO) receive a 75% tax credit. For example, if you expect to owe $1500 in Iowa income tax, you can donate $2000 to the STO and receive a $1500 tax credit ($2000 x 75%); this leaves you owing $0 dollars on your Iowa income taxes. In addition, your gift may qualify for federal deductibility. But let’s not forget that the $2000 you’ve given will provide tuition assistance for qualifying families in the Archdiocese. It is that simple. For more information, talk to your tax professional or financial advisor or call Deacon Brian Zeman-Our Faith STO Director at 563-556-2580 ext. 296.
Stewardship Quote … Both widows in today’s readings gave all they had to the work of the Lord, one using all her remaining food to feed Elijah and the other offering her two copper coins to the temple treasury. Faithful stewards give all that is asked and trust the Lord to be faithful to His promises.

All SaintsMost of the saints we are aware of are religious
individuals who lived far from where we call home and accomplished impressive things often beyond our imagination and certainly outside of our day to day lived experience. Accordingly we often perceive saints as extremely pious, extraordinarily accomplished, and unlike ourselves. In reality, as quoted in a La Crosse newspaper at the time of Brother James Miller’s death: “Saints are often not extraordinary people but ordinary individuals, like you and me, who do extraordinary things.” Brother James Miller, a De La Salle Christian Brother and classmate of mine, has been beatified and is one miracle from being declared a saint. His story will be told in a future bulletin. This column is about the diverse personalities and experiences found among the saints.
Union with Jesus Christ is the goal of all saints. Saints are individuals so in union with Jesus Christ that they, like Jesus, reflect the love and mercy of the Father. Saint Therese of Lisieux is among many saints who are examples of being extraordinarily devoted to prayer, reflection, and meditation. There are others, such as Saint Francis Cabrini and Blessed Brother James Miller who did not have a lot of time for retreats, meditations, or devotional practices but expressed holiness via work with the poor and the promotion of peace and justice. They were disciples of Jesus Christ with an extraordinary passion to be a voice for the voiceless and a support for the poor and persecuted so they could live with dignity and self-determination.
Robert Ellsberg in his book, Blessed Among All Women, tells us “Don’t think that a saint must look saintly in the eyes of humans. Saints have an outer nature, but it is the inner nature that counts.” Elizabeth Johnson says in her book, Friends of God and Prophets: “holiness isn’t due to anything human beings have done or earned; instead it results from God drawing near to us with an infinite and contagious graciousness.” She goes on to define the communion of saints: “This is a people shaped by a profound relationship with the Holy One that acts like a deep spring of creative power at their very core.”
I lived with and worked with Blessed Brother James Miller, had the privilege of introducing, at a national conference in New York, Dom Helder Camara, a controversial figure in the Catholic Church whose cause for canonization was introduced on May 3, 2015, and I have had the opportunity to meet Mother Teresa, Pope Paul VI, and Pope John Paul II, each of whom has been declared a saint. Each one was gifted with a very unique personality and each displayed diverse priorities and perspectives as loyal disciples of Jesus Christ. However, each one left me with a profound sense of God’s presence and a passion to avail others of that same gift. Each one projected a sense of a closeness to God, in the words of Elizabeth Johson, “with an infinite and contagious graciousness.”
Matthew Kelly in his book, Rediscover the Saints leaves us with good advice. “. . every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. . . if there are pieces of your past that are weighing you down, it’s time to leave them behind. You
