Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning
Established in 1922, the parish
family of St. John the Baptist Church
welcomes and invites all people to our
community, especially those in need.
Guided by the Holy Spirit we are
sustained by the Sunday Eucharist,
the Word of God, and the
Sacraments. All are encouraged to
share their time, talent and treasure
as we grow in love through our
Catholic faith and the life, death and
resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Recycling
In the cutest voice, an 8-year-old
girl asked her father to start
recycling. He chuckled and asked,
“Why?” She replied, “So you can
help me save the planet.” He chuckled
again and asked, “And why do you
want to save the planet?” “Because that's where I keep all
my stuff,” she said.
Last year the recycling bin added a little over $5000 to the
Outreach Budget. If you bring your cans and bottles to the
recycling bin in the upper parking lot, not only can you help
to save our world, but you can support Outreach in helping
some of those who are need in our world. We so appreciate
the work of the Dennehy, Monticciolo, Mulcahy, and
Valentino families in making this possible. You can make
their task a little less arduous. Sometimes the bags they
are opening are filled with dirty bottles, cans, and ants.
Yuck! Please clean your bottles and cans before placing
them in the bin. These people do an amazing job; please
make it a little easier.

Brief History of our Preschool, 1979-2019 During the summer of 1979 there was a “summer
camp” run by Pat and Paul Baker. Over the course
of the six weeks of camp, parents began to talk
about a parish preschool. Jane Brady was a teacher
at the summer camp, and Jane decided to bring the
idea to the pastor, Father John Vitsas. Jane wanted
to start a program that would be well rounded and
grounded in the Catholic faith. That was in August
of 1979. Father Charles Erhart was the associate pastor at the time. He became a
“cheerleader” for the idea of the preschool and became the “moderator” of the new
parish program.
The Preschool started three weeks later, the first Wednesday after Labor Day. Jane
was the founding director and teacher of the two-day program (three year olds).
Lorraine Rooney was the first teacher of the three-day program (four year olds).
There was two aides (Pat Asquino and Janet Tooker) and a health teacher (Jeannette
Dierberger). The preschool was well-received and word spread through town. In
the fall of 1980, afternoon sessions were added for the three and the four year olds.
Jane, Lorraine and the aides continued to staff the preschool. Waiting lists began to
be needed — the classes were filled to capacity, and enrollment was at 72 for many
years.
Jane Brady continued as director of the preschool until June of 1994. The next
director was Katherine Bedard, who stayed for three years. The next director was
Jennifer Villacci from 1996 until 2001. Jennifer added more classes, and rooms
were modified to accommodate the increase in preschoolers. Gayle Mercurio, a
teacher at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Riverhead, was hired by
Monsignor John Sullivan and began in September, 2001.
Gayle is our current Preschool Director.
The Preschool has met all New York State requirements,
and created three classes for both the 3s and 4s. In the
fall of 2013 “Talented Twos” were added to the preschool
program. The parents are offered a flexible schedule of
whatever days and times are best for their families.

Please consider “automated giving” as you reflect on support of
our parish family! The fruitful ministries at our parish are examples of how
many of you have answered, and continue to answer, that
call. To ensure such work can continue requires not only
gifts of time, but also of financial help. I ask you to
prayerfully consider supporting our parish with electronic
donations through Faith Direct. You can find paper
enrollment forms in the parish office, or you can sign up
online at www.faithdirect.net by using our church code, NY67.
