Game Time!Cotton wool ball challenge:

The object of the game is to move 5 cotton wool balls from one side of the room to the other but you must not use your hands!

Instead, put some Vaseline or face cream on the top of your nose. Get a cotton wool ball to stick on it and walk with it to a paper plate or bowl, on the other side of the room. Shake off the ball and return for the next one.

Either play as a relay race or time yourself and see how many you can transfer in two minutes!

Suck up a smarties You will need: 2 plates, a straw, smarties or small pieces of paper. Object of the game is to transfer the smarties from one plate to another as quickly as you can.

However, you must not touch them, or pick them up if they fall on the floor, you have to suck up through the straw to make the smarties stay on the end of the straw until you reach the other plate! Do not eat any smarties that fall on the floor!!! Have a race then enjoy eating the sweets!

If you don’t have a straw, try carrying fruit under your chin from one side of the room to the other. Oranges are tricky but grapes are even harder!

One minute

Stand in the room and ask someone to time one minute on their watch. Sit down when you think one minute has passed. It is more difficult than you think to get it right!

What are you impatient for? Maybe you can’t wait for your Birthday celebrations or going back to school, to see your teachers and friends again. Perhaps you have lost patience waiting to go to the cinema or visiting your family. When we get impatient, sometimes we get angry and sulky because we feel frustrated. Today we are going to at the story of Gideon and how God never loses his patience.

Our Story today

• If we look at the story of Gideon, God asks him to do an important job for him. However, instead of agreeing, Gideon keeps asking for proof that God really is going to help him defeat the Midianites but God never loses his patience.

• Firstly, Gideon tells God’s angel that he is the least important member of his family, from the weakest group of people but the angel tells him that God still wants him to lead the Israelites into battle.

• Next, Gideon asks for proof that it really is God talking to him. So, the angel tells him to bring food and when Gideon presents it, the food bursts into flames! Gideon realises that he really has been speaking to an angel from God.

• However, next, Gideon asks for proof that God is going to help him defeat the Midianites. He lays some wool on the ground and says to God, “If only the wool has dew on it and not the grass, when we wake up in the morning, I will believe.”

• However, when this happens, Gideon still wants MORE proof and says, “This time, let the wool be dry and the ground be wet” and it is!

• All through this, God does not get angry. God is patient and kind. He gives Gideon the proof he needs to know that God will help him in the battle. Get your trumpet and candle holder ready then join in with the story!

Let’s get craftyMake a trumpet

Take a square piece of paper. Roll it with a narrow end and a wide end, in a cone shape. Glue it together and put your lips to the narrow end and toot!

Make a candle handle

You need: A clean, empty jam jar; some flame shapes of red, orange and yellow card; glue and a battery-operated candle or nightlight.

Stick your flame shapes around the jar, inside and out. Light your battery-operated light and drop it inside the jar.

Let’s think…

• What do you need patience for? Maybe you find learning your spellings hard or solving mathematical problems. Perhaps you have to be patient when playing football and your team is losing and you’re needing to score a goal, or maybe you just can’t get a move right in dance.

• Do you need to have patience with other people? Do your younger brothers or sisters always need help or maybe your parents don’t understand what you’re trying to tell them.

• Was God patient with Gideon? Yes, he was. Should we try to be like God? It is so hard being patient with other people but we need to love as God does – not getting grumpy or upset but supporting and caring about each other.

Memory Verse

This time I have removed the vowels from the verse. If you find it too tricky to solve, look up Ephesians 4 verse 2 and see how God wants us to be:

“ B _ h _ m b l _ _ n d g _ n t l _ _ n _ v _ r y w _ y.

B _ p _ t _ _ n t w _ t h _ _ c h _ t h _ r _ n d l _ v _ n g l y _ c c _ p t _ _ c h _ t h _ r. ”

Prayer

Make a prayer chain. Cut up strips of coloured paper:

• Red for trusting God

• White for asking God to give you patience

• Blue for prayers for other people.

Write a prayer on each strip then glue or tape them together. Use your chain as a decoration in your bedroom, to remind you to talk regularly to God.
