This summer will be full of good changes at St. John's United Church of Christ. In addition to our

worship center refurbishment, new professional staff positions have been identified as

necessary for our present and future growth.

These changes have been approved by the Consistory and congregation, and we proceed

under the general principles that were set into place many years ago when we began our

Capital Campaign ("Building to serve - Christ, Church, and Community") - to improve our

facilities for present and future growth as a congregation, for refurbishment and code updates,

and for the future needs of the Cocalico Care Center and other mission ministries at St. John's.

WORSHIP CENTER REFURBISHMENT

Updates and refurbishment to the worship center - nave and sanctuary areas of the church - will

begin this summer. The Property Committee is acting upon the approved recommendations

of the Worship Support Team and congregation to create an updated space for a variety of

worship needs. The following improvements, refurbishments, and new additions will be added

this summer and perhaps, into the fall:

Keeping the altar in its current place, but lowering it one step for easier access inside the

chancel, and better vision for the congregation.

Clearing the choir area of its pews and building a raised platform "stage", providing new

chairs for the choir and other groups, moving the pulpit off its pedestal and setting it on a

moveable custom made dolly, and moving the sedela seats and offering table (connected

together) to underneath the organ pipes on the stage.

Installing a new PowerPoint screen system that will enable us to increase our congregation's

viewing opportunities and that will increase visual aid for seeing other worship resources.

Adding a camera for enhanced viewing and recording of worship services/programs.

PowerPoint will also greatly aid the Cocalico Care Center in its ministries with parents,

children, and staff.

Installing new carpeting throughout the worship center.

Installing new pew cushions on the seats and backs of the pews.

Air-conditioning (this may be delayed depending upon the size of the AC units that will be

needed to air condition the future expanded narthex/vestibule area)

NEW STAFF POSITIONS SEARCH

New staff positions were also identified as a need for improving our current and future ministries

with young people and in worship. These staff positions are open to all qualified people,

including present or past ministry staff persons. Four search committees are being formed to

recommend candidates to the Consistory for hire:

WORSHIP COORDINATOR/MUSICIAN:

This person will possess musical skills on the guitar and/or piano and will be able to lead

worship services, adding to the fine job that Philip, our choirs, and other youth bring to our

worship services. Additional responsibilities will include working with Pastor David, the staff,

our sound system and PowerPoint system people to provide additional scopes to our worship

celebration.

PRE-TEEN AND JUNIOR YOUTH ADVISOR:

More than a coordinator, this person or persons will develop and maintain relationships with

youth in these age groups, and establish a steering committee of parents and other adults to

assist with ministries and activities involving these age groups. Age appropriate teaching,

involvement in ministry, and activities to introduce and to strengthen ties with God and the

church will be a central focus.

SENIOR HIGH AND COLLEGE AGE ADVISOR:

The senior high and college age advisor will also develop and maintain relationships with these

youth and young people, involving them in the wider ministry of the church, in mission, and in

activities that will assist in their spiritual and practical development as Christians. Special

support and activities will keep college students in touch with St. John's. A steering committee

will also be established to assist with this ministry.

COORDINATOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND WORSHIP ASSISTANT:

This is a current staff position that is being enhanced to involve a greater role in assisting with

worship ministries. This addition will encourage a greater tie in with the whole Christian

Education Ministry, providing opportunities for adults, youth, and children to participate at a

greater level in the worship experience. Also, the Christian Education Committee will provide

greater oversight of the teaching ministries of the church as a support to this staff person.

CONFIRMATION CELEBRATION IS MAY 20 What is confirmation? Confirmation is a process of teaching and learning about the

Christian faith, the church, and life in the service of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The

Rite of Confirmation is the opportunity for a person to confess their faith in Jesus Christ, to

promise to be a faithful member of the church of Jesus Christ, and to claim for their own the

promises of baptism which were taken on their behalf when they were younger.

Confirmation is also a time to remember and to celebrate our covenant promises as members

of the church of Jesus Christ, and to welcome our new members into the family of faith, which

is the church. God is present as the triune God we know as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

and through his grace alone are we able to make our vows, endeavor to keep them, and to

celebrate new life and eternal life. This year, Trevor Fichthorn, Justin Hoover, Mason

Hornberger, and Ken Wallace will be making their promises of faithfulness to God, and we,

as a church will be present to make our promises of prayerful love, encouragement, and

support. Join us for the celebration on Sunday, May 20, at 10:15 AM, and for the celebration

in the fellowship hall afterward!

New Building Security Measures In an effort to increase overall building security at St. John’s UCC and the Cocalico

Care Center, we will be installing a new door lock system in early May. The primary

door at the entrance to the Cocalico Care Center will have a fingerprint scanner, to be

used by the care center parents.

The kitchen door and one door in the fellowship hall will have electronic key card

scanners. All other locking doors at the church will be re-keyed, based upon

recommendations from the Yarnell Security Company, who is overseeing the new

security system installation.

Therefore, electronic Key Cards and Mechanical Keys will be issued by Amy in the

church office. Please contact Pastor David if you have questions about the new

system. 335-2394. Thank you for your patience as we work together to protect our

church and our children.

May is the traditional month of our Auxiliary Membership Drive, and with Mother’s Day also that same month, our thoughts turn to the support of our beloved seniors who are residents of our six facili-ties in the Penn Central Conference. Your generous gifts have provided a van to all six homes, hearing devices for chapel services and programs, patio tables with umbrellas, DVD players and all kinds of special events at the different homes.

Annual dues continue to be $4.00 per year and Sustaining Memberships at $35.00. Even if you are presently a Sustaining Member, you might consider a separate donation. Some of us buy a Sustaining Membership yearly, or you might consider a special gift in memory of a loved one.

CCC Newsletter May 2012

The history of Mother’s Day is centuries old and the earliest Mother’s Day celebra-tions can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600’s the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. By a religious order the holiday was later expanded in its scope to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), “Mothering Sunday” honored the mother of England.

During this time many of England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. www.thehoildayspot.com.

This month, the Cocalico Care Center will be honoring mothers with our Mother’s Day lunch week. We will also be looking ahead as plans are made for our annual Family Picnic on the church grounds. Both days provide food, fun, games, and special activities for all who attend.

Our staff will also be busy planning our school-age summer camp ses-sions. This year we will be creating our own version of the “Amazing Race”. The students will be “traveling around the world” learning about the culture, music, history, & famous landmarks of the many far away places that will be visited, Thanks to the Music for Everyone grant that the center was awarded, children will be building their own African in-struments to take home and visited by the Cocalico Middle Schools Afri-can Drumming group for a special workshop!

and a concert by the Lancaster Community Chorus at 3 p.m.

CAROL BENDER HONORED WITH MECK AWARD he Rev. Mrs. Carol A. Bender, Senior Pastor of Christ Church UCC, Elizabethtown, has been named one of two recipients of Lancaster Seminary’s 2012 Allen S. Meck Award for distinguished service in the practice of pastoral ministry. The award,

honoring the memory of Allan S. Meck ‘11, president of the seminary, 1947-1957, is presen-ted annually by the Alumni/ae Association of Lancaster Theological Seminary to reflect the Seminary’s commitment to excellence in ministry. Recipients are Lancaster Seminary alumni/ae chosen by the Association’s Faithfulness in Ministry Committee for their distinguished service in a particular aspect of ministry.

For the 2012 award, the committee looked at several specific criteria for indications of excellence in ministry: Fostering the vitality of the ministry; Exhibiting excellent pastoral presence; Demonstrating creativity in ministry; Enlisting and nurturing the gifts of others; and Relating the Gospel to the commonly-shared experiences in the ministry.

The 2012 Faithfulness in Ministry Awards will be presented by the Alumni/ae Council at the annual Spring Alumni/ae Day Banquet on May 18. The Rev. Mr. Paul Eyer, Director of Alumni/ae and Church Relations, along with the new Lancaster Seminary Vice President for Advancement, will share with the congregation in worship, June 3, to present the award to Carol in the midst of the community she serves.

MINISTERIAL TRANSITIONINGS egan Malick was called as pastor of Trinity UCC, Mountville, March 25. She will begin her ministry there on May 1.

Amy Schultz’s ministerial standing has been transferred to the York Association where she has been named the designated pastor at Heidelberg UCC, York.

Diane Brandt will have a Service of Closure as she leaves DUCC on April 21. Her ministerial licensing will be discontinued as of May 21.

Gene Hill finished his interim ministry at St. Paul UCC, Manheim, as of April 8. Brian Snow’s status as a Member in Discernment was renewed for another year as he

continues work on his ordination paper. He will be serving as the chaplain of Hospice of PA in Bryn Mawr.

Greg Carey, member of Grace UCC, Eden, and Karen Umberger, member and music director at St. Luke’s, Lititz, have been received as Members in Discernment.

BISHOP CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES AT CHRIST CHURCH

he Lancaster Brass Quintet will be featured at the second in a series of five concerts at Christ Church UCC, Elizabeth-

town, set for 4 p.m., Sunday, May 20, in the church sanctuary. The concert is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will follow.

The Miriam R. Bishop Concert Series is sponsored by J. Richard Bishop in memory of his wife, Miriam, and in honor of his three sons and their wives, his three grandsons and their wives, and his five great-grand-children.

The Lancaster Brass Quintet has been active in the musical community of central Pennsylvania since 1982, performing a wide variety of music literature, including jazz, show tunes, sacred music, marches and original works for brass.

message in eight languages on the “peace pole” at the entrance to Salem UCC’s Fellowship Hall. Dedicated on April 9, the Peace Pole stands as a witness to peace to the many guests and members who enter our facility for fellowship, AA, musical groups, scouts, and family observances.

FROM ISRAEL & PALESTINE: hen Pastor Mitri Raheb asked Nohemi Pagán to help in the organization of "the Jesus' Birthday" program in Bethlehem, she was not

aware of the challenges and blessings this opportunity would provide.

She thought it was a matter of preparing some devotions and buying presents for around 100 children… But she was surprised by the grace of God!

After calling her students at the Dar al-Kalima College to help, Nohemi soon realized that the commun-ity was responding well to the invitation. The day of the program they were pleased to welcome over 500 child-ren that enjoyed not only the gifts, but also a transform-ing program.

The importance of the event was not related to just the number of children that responded to the invitation. Nor was the major achievement that the majority of the families present were Muslims! Neither that the program was an extraordinary drama presented by the Diyar Consortium Drama Company! The heart of the success was that we affirmed the values of forgiveness and reconciliation in the midst of a society of full of hatred, injustices and despair. The most important part of the program was the affirmation of peace which is based on justice.

The children and Nohemi left the Church premises that afternoon with a sense of hope! They celebrated the birth of the Prince of Peace!
