Dear Parishioners, Sta ons of the Cross & Confessions Daily Mass is in the church during Lent to make it easier for more people to a end. On Fridays during Lent, we’ll have Sta ons of the Cross following the 8 AM Mass. In addi on to Saturdays at 11 AM and 3 PM, I’ll be available for confessions before Masses Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Coronavirus Latest To find out the latest from the Diocese of Tren-ton about the coronavirus, visit h ps://dioceseo renton.org/coronavirus Here is an excerpt from the diocesan statement issued on February 27th: Diocesan advisory amid coronavirus concerns With federal health officials issuing a warning this week about the poten al spread of the corona-virus in the United States, and news coming in from around the globe about extreme measures under-way to stem the spread, the Diocese of Trenton is issuing the following instruc ons: The Diocese has always advised the faithful that sickness is a valid reason not to a end Mass or oth-er Church gatherings where large groups assem-ble. At Mass, no member of the faithful is obliged: (1) to shake hands at the sign of peace; (2) to receive the Precious Blood of Christ from the chalice; (3) to receive the Body of Christ on the tongue unless that is his/her preference. With the concerns about the coronavirus, the faithful are encouraged to take all the same precau-

ons they would follow regarding the flu. Use nor-mal good judgment. If you are sick or have flu-like symptoms, stay home. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is broadcast on several television channels and the sick can make a “spiritual communion” un l they return to good health. The message from the Centers for Disease Con-trol and the Na onal Ins tutes of Health is to be prepared, but not panicked. The Diocese will con n-ue to monitor advisories from Catholic and other organiza ons regarding precau ons on the corona-virus and share any appropriate informa on with the faithful and the parishes.

Coronavirus Prepara on at St. John’s Tom and Ma always disinfect doors and bath-rooms early in the week a er Sunday Masses. They are now doing even more—including disinfec ng the pews. I encouraged the money counters to use gloves while coun ng money. Gina already disinfects the main office counter every day before going home. If an update is shared with us, I will promptly post it to our Facebook page. If the update is cri -cal, we’ll get the word out via our website, e-mail, and through the normal channels with our Religious Educa on families. We’ll also change the message on the phone.

Recep on of Holy Communion & Germs I ask everyone who comes forward to receive Holy Communion to do so in a way that is reverent and prac cal. If you receive on the tongue, then lt your head slightly up and s ck out your tongue. Wait un l the host is on your tongue and the EMHC’s fingers are pulled back before closing your mouth. If you receive on the hand, then place your dom-inant hand under your non-dominant hand. Hold your hands flat. Let the EMHC, priest, or deacon place the host on your hand before using your domi-nant hand to place the host in your mouth. The general idea is to be reverent and not make contact with the minister’s fingers.

Annual Catholic Appeal We received our first numbers for the appeal on March 2nd. We have 171 donors who have pledged $20,346 with $17,203 already collected. We are al-ready nearly one-third of the way to our goal of $66,000. On behalf of myself and Bishop O’Connell, thank you to the many you have already made a gi to our 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. Early indica ons are very encouraging, and we hope this posi ve mo-mentum con nues. If you have not yet made a gi , please consider suppor ng our Parish by choosing a ministry to support. To donate go to: www.dioceseo renton.org/catholicappeal or call 609-403-7197. Thank you in advance for your generous considera on.

Blue Chairs Tom and Ma have replaced the coasters on the blue chairs so that they are safer. The blue chairs will not slide so easily. Rather, they’ll stay in place be er than before. Suffering In the second reading, St. Paul tells us to “bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.” In the gospel we hear the story of the Transfig-ura on. Considering the context that we’re in the first half of Lent, we can see that Jesus gave Peter, James, and John some hope by showing them his glory. How does God strengthen us for suffering or sacrificing for another? How does He give us hope?

God love you, Fr. Jim [email protected] SURVIVING DIVORCE MINISTRY St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church is pleased to announce a new ministry en tled, “Surviving Di-vorce: Hope and Healing for the Catholic Family”, a healing program being offered for divorced or sepa-rated Catholics that will begin on March 24th, 2020. If interested please email [email protected] with your name and contact informa on and one of the facilitators, Dave Scherr, Lori Daly, or Pat Ko-loge, will get back in touch with you regarding all the details and will answer any ques ons you may have. FOOD COLLECTION 3rd Sunday, March 21st/22nd, 2020

St. Vincent de Paul Society Boxes will be at the doors of our Church to ac-cept your non-perishable dona ons. All food will be distributed on Monday, March 23rd, 2020. Thank you in advance for all you do to help those in our parish who are less fortunate.

During this Lenten Season we have been focus-ing on prayer, fas ng and almsgiving. These prac c-es help us remember how Jesus suffered and died for our sins and was resurrected at Easter. During Lent, Catholics do not eat meat on Fridays, and they fast and abstain from ea ng meat on Ash Wednes-day and Good Friday. This spiritual self-discipline is meant to help us focus on Easter. Prayer also is an important part of Lent. One popular prayer is the Sta ons of the Cross. Lent also is a me to focus on giving alms to the poor. Here at St John’s we can give our alms to the St Vincent DePaul Society to help our neighbors in need. The following are a few addi onal prac ces that we may consider incorpora ng into our Lenten plan for the remainder of Lent: 1. Daily Mass: Whether you are a daily Mass goer or not, resolve to go during Lent. Pick someone in your life to offer the Mass up for each me you go. 2. Pray morning and evening prayer from the Litur-gy of the Hours. 3. Pray the rosary every day for someone’s inten-

ons and give them the Rosary that you used to pray for them. 4. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet daily. 5. Consider taking a trip to our Diocesan cathedral or set aside a day to visit a series of churches, chap-els, and holy places. 6. A end the Sta ons of the Cross on Fridays. 7. Pick a person for whom you feel called to offer prayer and sacrifice during the Lenten season. 8. Stay Awake and Keep Watch: Spend an hour with Jesus each week at Eucharis c Adora on __________________________________________
