From the Pastor

A Farewell & Appreciation

Reception for Fr. Emery & Fr. Rich

The time has come to say farewell

to two of our servants, Fr. Emery Longanga

and Fr. Rich Rosin. As of July 1st, Fr. Emery will

be leaving us for his new assignment at Holy

Cross Parish. Fr. Rich is preparing for his new

assignment in New Rochelle, NY. Sunday, June 4th we will bid them farewell with

a reception in Msgr. Trainor Hall, following the

11:30 a.m. Mass. All are invited to send them off

with well wishes as they continue their service to

Our Lord.

Memorial Day Mass

Calvary Catholic Cemetery Memorial Day has always been special at Calvary

Catholic Cemetery. It is the only cemetery serving

the five-county Diocese of St. Petersburg where

the true fullness of freedom—both sacred and

secular—are observed on this national holiday. On Monday, May 29th at 10 a.m., Bishop Gregory

L. Parkes and other priests of the Diocese of

St. Petersburg, will gather at the outdoor altar

to celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass—a

memorial of the death and resurrection of Jesus

who freed mankind from the bonds of sin—and

to remember, honor and pray for those who have

maintained the freedoms that we enjoy as United

States citizens. Calvary Catholic Cemetery

Prayer for Our Nation

God Our Father, giver of life,

We entrust the United States of America

to your loving care.

You are the rock on which this nation

was founded. You alone are the

true source of our cherished rights

to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Reclaim this land for your glory

and dwell among your people.

Send your spirit to touch the hearts

of our nation’s leaders.

Open their minds to the great worth

of human life and the responsibilities

that accompany human freedom.

Remind your people that true happiness

is rooted in seeking and doing your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate,

patroness of our land, grant us the courage

to reject the “culture of death.”

Lead us into a new millennium of life.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

Join us for our summer series on the Holy Spirit

weekly meetings: Tuesdays, 6–7:30 p.m., in the Youth Room

Crosswalk Safety

Drivers! It’s the Law! When traffic signals are not present

or not in operation, the driver of a

vehicle must yield the right-of-way,

slowing or stopping if necessary, to pedestrians

crossing within a crosswalk upon the half of the

roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or

when the pedestrian is approaching so closely

from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in

danger. A driver may not overtake another driver stopped

at a marked or unmarked crosswalk. (A pedestri-

an may be crossing in the crosswalk hidden from

view by the stopped vehicle.) More information on traffic safety can be found at

www.dot.state.fl.us/Safety. Drivers! Protect pedestrians at crosswalks.

St. Pete Beach Hurricane Season June 1 — November 30

The City of St. Pete Beach is extremely vulnerable

to the damaging effects of hurricanes. The land

elevation is only approximately 7.5 feet above sea

level, making the island highly susceptible to flood-

ing which could possibly block evacuation routes.

The City of St. Pete Beach must evacuate

completely when threatened by approaching

hurricanes.

As a citizen of the City of St. Pete Beach, you need

to know what to do in order to survive a hurricane

that threatens the Tampa Bay Region. You should

immediately decide where you plan to go when

ordered to evacuate.

The designated evacuation routes for the City of

St. Pete Beach are across the Pinellas Bayway

Bridge and across the Corey Causeway Bridge.

Blind Pass will not be used to avoid traffic conges-

tion and will be blocked when the evacuation

order is issued. If you have no other choice than

to evacuate to a shelter, the available county

shelters will be announced via local media at

the time of the evacuation order.

If you plan to evacuate to the home of a friend or

relative, be sure it is not in an evacuation zone.

A Hurricane Watch will be announced when a

storm threatens coastal and inland areas and

hurricane conditions are a real possibility.

You should:

1. Fill your car with gas, check battery, oil

and water.

2. Check flashlight and radio batteries—stay

tuned to radio or TV stations for reports.

3. Make arrangements for safety of pets (pets will

not be allowed in public shelters.)

4. Organize your family.

5. Refill prescription drugs or obtain special

medications.

A Hurricane Warning will be issued when

hurricane conditions (winds of 75 miles per hour,

high water and storm surge), are expected within a

specified area in 24 hours. You must be prepared

to evacuate anytime a hurricane warning is

issued—even if the weather does not appear

threatening at the time. You should:

1. Clear your yard of loose objects, bicycles, lawn

furniture, garbage cans, etc.

2. Secure your boat. Remember, most

drawbridges will be closed to boat traffic after

the evacuation order is issued.

3. Protect windows, take down awnings and

otherwise secure your home.

4. Put together materials needed to take to a

shelter or place of safety.

5. Prepare to evacuate.

Evacuation Routes: Citizens living South of 44th Avenue (including

44th Avenue) will evacuate the City by way of

the Bayway Bridge. Citizens living North of 44th Avenue will

evacuate the City by way of the Corey

Causeway Bridge. If you are unable to evacuate and cannot make

arrangements with a friend or relative to help you

evacuate the city when ordered, the Fire Depart-

ment will provide transportation to the county

shelter for those residents with special needs or no

other way to leave the beach. You can contact the Fire Department by calling

363.9206 or call St. Pete Beach City Hall at

367.2735, and they will relay your request to the

Fire Department.

A Prayer for the Faithful Departed

Christ Renews His Parish O Jesus, lover of souls, we recommend unto you the

souls of all your servants, who have departed with the

sign of faith and sleep, the sleep of peace. We beseech

you. Lord and Savor, that, as in your

mercy to them you became man, so

now you would admit them to your

presence above. Gracious Lord, we beseech you, remember not against

them the sins of their youth and their ignorance; but

be mindful of them in your heavenly glory. May the

heavens be opened to them. May the Archangel St.

Michael conduct them to you. May your holy angels

come forth to meet them, and carry them to the city of

the heavenly Jerusalem. May they rest in peace.

—John Henry Newman

Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute

Is God Calling You to Serve as a Lay Ecclesial

Minister in His Church? Go, therefore, and make disciples

of all nations....(Matthew 28:19)

are they last words of Christ prior

to his Ascension. They are words

that command us to spread the faith!

Christ didn’t say maybe, if you feel like it—no,

he says Go! While this may be a difficult call for

us, He also promises to be with us always—even

at times we may doubt our faith, or doubt our

capacity to share it. Ask yourself: How should I respond to this com-

mand from Jesus? Am I open to entering into on-

going faith formation and ministry leadership

training to help me better share my faith? Why or

why not? New classes begin on September 9, 2017. Anyone interested in attending the LPMI Year of

Discernment monthly sessions, can find more

details on the LPMI web site www.dosp.org/lpmi.

You many also contact the LPMI office at the

Pastoral Center at 727.344.1611, or send an email

to [email protected]. Ask yourself: Am I willing to step out of my

“comfort zone” and trust the Spirit to provide

the wisdom and strength I would need to pursue

theological studies?

Lighthouse Catholic Media

Who Am I to Judge? (CD) Discussing moral issues with family and friends

can be a challenge in a culture that strongly

promotes the idea that there is no

objective truth. Speaking from a

wealth of personal experience,

renowned author and theologian

Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 “keys”

to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love

what Pope Benedict XVI called the “Dictatorship

of Relativism.” He also clarifies the proper

understanding of what it means to judge, and

the importance of making good judgments. Various CD’s, booklets and/or books are available

in the main entrance of the church. We kindly ask

for a $2 donation for each booklet, $3 donation for

each CD and $5 for each book to continue this

ministry. Please make checks payable to St. John

Vianney. For more information, contact the parish
