Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On November 27, 2011, the English-speaking Catholic Church in the United States will begin using a new translation of the prayers that are used at Mass. A series of questions and answers on this topic will appear here each week to help explain the thinking behind these changes. Please consider today’s item below.

What is the timeline for the approval and implementation of the Missal?

After the Latin “Missale Romanum” was published in 2002, ICEL began its work of preparing a draft English translation of the text. ICEL presented the first section—the Order of Mass, which contains the fixed prayers of the Mass, including the people’s parts—to the English speaking conferences of bishops in 2004. The USCCB approved the final version in 2006, and the Holy See confirmed this section in June 2008. The remaining sections were approved between 2007 and 2009. The USCCB completed its approval of the Missal in November 2009. The Holy See granted the final approval of the text in the spring of 2010. Cardinal Francis George, OMI, president of the USCCB, announced that parishes may begin using the revised translation on November 27, 2011. (Copyright 2010, USCCB, Washington, DC. Thank you to all who continue to respond for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our current pledge total has risen to $173,293.00, which is 181% of our goal of $95,371.00, and already 71.6% of our stretch goal of $242,021.00. Let’s see what we can do together to reach this year’s stretch goal. It brings the largest rebate to our parish. Please take a moment to fill out a pledge card, available in the church or rectory.

+++ We have all seen the devastation and pain that the people of Japan have been experiencing daily since the March 11th earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear reactor accidents. As Christians we are called to bring healing to suffering. Archbishop Myers has authorized an emergency collection to be taken at all Catholic parishes and schools to assist in relief efforts in the aftermath of the devastation. All donations from today’s special second collection will be directed to Catholic Relief Services, which is working with Caritas International and others to find pathways to bring aid to the many thousands stricken by this tragedy. If you wish to contribute but are unable to make your contribution by tomorrow here at the rectory, please send your check , made payable to “Archdiocese of Newark—Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Relief” to Archdiocese of Newark, Office of Finance, PO Box 9500, Newark, NJ 07104-0500. Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

Every night, a cruise ship magician tapped his magic wand on the gilded cage three times. The orchestra began a drum roll. The stage lights flashed and flickered. Inside the cage, his parrot, Bobby, looked confidently out at the audience, as if to say, “Wait ‘til you get a load of this!” Then a secret trap door opened, and Bobby dropped out of sight into a box below the cage.

One night at this precise moment in the act, a terrible explosion blew the ship apart. It sank in seconds. Amid the debris floating on the open sea was the box with Bobby safe inside. “Yikes,” the parrot exclaimed, “He made the whole ship disappear!”

We all love magic.

When Jesus encountered the woman at the well in today’s gospel, it was not some kind of trick. It was the real deal. For the Samaritan woman, it was a life-changing experience, and because she had the courage and conviction to tell others, the whole village came to believe that Jesus really is “the Savior of the world.”

The same life-changing experience occurred in our souls at baptism. We, too, should have the courage and conviction to tell others, by word and deed, that Jesus really is the “Savior of the world.”
