The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. — Hebrews 4:12a

SJE School Scholastic Book Fair is coming! This Book Fair brings the books kids want to read right into our school. There is a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. It will be open from Sunday, November 11 to Friday, November 16 in the school library. Sunday hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Payment options are cash or debit/credit only. All purchases benefit our school.

Recently, while reading the book, Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples, edited by Sherry Weddell, one of the contributors wrote, “That it is not the number of people in a community that parishioners serve, it is the number of parishioners that serve the community.” After much thought, I came to realize the wisdom and truth of that comment. The role of a parish is to foster the apostolic zeal within each parishioner by opening up the individual’s knowledge and experience of the gifts given them by the Holy Spirit. This zeal, fed by the Eucharist, draws each one of us into the fullness of our humanity as we - through our words and actions - live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the course of their daily life – at work, at home, and in the community. In times past, the faithful would understand the duty of fostering an apostolic zeal within the parish fell solely on the shoulders of the pastor. This is not the case. In a 2009 letter to the Diocese of Rome, Pope Benedict said that the “laity must be recognized as “co-responsible”, for the Church’s being and action, thereby fostering the consolidation of a mature and committed laity.” Over the next couple of months, St. John the Evangelist community will be in the process of assembling a new Parish Pastoral Council. This Council will consist of individuals of different ministries and individuals of the community-at-large. The major task for this Council will be the completion of a Parish Pastoral Plan. This Plan will assist the pastor in establishing programs that meet the unique needs of this community to grow in apostolic zeal. Prior to embarking on the completion of a Pastoral Plan, the Council will spend time in formation so all members can grow in a common vision and a greater trust of the Holy Spirit’s work within the parish and themselves. Despite the continued tearing of the scabs from the wounds of Christ’s Church, it is not the time to return to the catacombs. On the contrary, it is time for us to go forth in the world and share the joy and the hope that fills our hearts because we know the good news of Jesus Christ! Are you ready? Please prayerfully consider if the Holy Spirit is calling you to participate in the Parish Pastoral Council. Representatives will be available after all masses on 10/20 and 10/21 to answer your questions. Blessings, Deacon Keith

SVdP - In September the St. Vincent de Paul food locker fed a total of 560 people including 130 children and 14 infants. Many months this is done at a cost of zero dollars. Zero dollars you say?? Yes, because of the generosity of our parishioners and local merchants. And speaking of generosity, among the items we need on a regular basis are jelly, top ramen, spaghetti sauce and spaghetti pasta. And to our faithful giving parishioners: Thank you very much for all you do for the St. Vincent de Paul food closet. The generosity of St. John’s parishioners is never underestimated and always valued.

A Prayer for Healing: “Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to you. Allow your healing hand to heal me/us. Touch my/our soul/s with compassion for others (especially those who have been hurt by our Church). Touch my/our heart/s with your courage and infinite love for all. Touch my/our mind/s with your wisdom that my/our mouth/s may always proclaim your praise. Teach me/us to reach out to You in my/our need/s and help me/us lead others to You by good example. Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring me/us health in body & spirit so that I/we may serve You with all my/our strength. Touch gently this life (these lives) which You have created.” (From Priests of the Sacred-Heart.) Pope Francis’ October intentions: “That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves and be present among the poor, the marginalized and those who have no voice.” Pope Francis is also calling on everyone to pray the Rosary and the St. Michael prayer (Back of our Mass Book) during the month of October.
