Once again it is Carnival time! Please see the flyer in today’s bulletin and join us for this special annual fundraiser and fun giver! Parishioners who wish to make a food dish for sale at our food booth, please bring it around 5:30pm any evening of the Carnival. We are especially in need of southern fried chicken. A parking reminder: Area businesses continue to be open during times when the Carnival is being held. Please observe the signs posted in the various lots. Dr. Yee has once again graciously allowed us to use his lot after 7pm on weekdays and after 3pm on Saturday. ATTENTION: morning Massgoers, school families, and early Carnival workers: DO NOT PARK IN DR. YEE’S LOT BEFORE THE TIMES ABOVE. You will be subject to towing to make parking spots available for dental clients.

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The story goes that, as the ship Titanic sank into the North Sea, the ship’s band played the hymn, “Nearer My God, to Thee,” the first verse of which is: “Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.”

While some have questioned the truth of this account, the appeal of the story remains, because the bravery of the musicians who continued to play to lift the hearts of the passengers reminds us of how suffering and disaster, rather than beating us down and defeating us, can become the means by which we are lifted up to God.

This feast is called the “Exaltation of the Holy Cross,” because it celebrates the cross as the occasion of Jesus’ being lifted up to God to be a sign of the world’s salvation. In some paradoxical way, it is in his humiliation that Jesus most clearly shows us the nature of divine love. In coming to know and believe in this love, we are healed and given eternal life. Just as the sight of the bronze serpent saved the Israelites from the venom of the seraph, so too our coming to “see” Jesus in faith heals us of the deadly poison of sin.

What we see in Jesus we see also in our own lives. In a way that we cannot always understand, the crosses that we encounter in our lives lift us nearer to God, provided that we embrace them in the faith that Jesus has transformed the meaning of suffering. If in the midst of suffering and disaster we can look to the one who was raised up on the cross for our salvation, we will not perish but have eternal life.

“Lord Jesus, on the cross you were lifted up as a sign of God’s love. Let that love heal us from the poison of sin so that we might live our lives for your glory. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” John 3: 16

God gave us the gift of His Son so we can enjoy eternal salvation. Of all our gifts, our life is the most precious. We belong to God. This is why we must take time every day to ask Him how He wants us to use the life He has given us
